Support HB 653

On Thursday, the Maryland House Ways and Means Committee is due to consider HB 653.  Among other things, HB 653 would require a 2/3 vote to increase taxes.  It would also prohibit the state to assess real property at a value greater than its true cash value.

Among the sponsors of HB 653 are Del. Mike Smigiel (R-36) and Del. Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio (R-37).  Where are the names of our own delegates – Norm Conway, Page Elmore, and Jim Mathias?  As noted earlier, Conway and Mathias like to portray themselves as “fiscally conservative”.  Ditto for Elmore.

History has shown that the only way we can limit government is to “starve the beast”.  Politicians will simply not do it on their own.  Call or email your delegates and ask them to sponsor HB 653.

What are Wicomico County and Salisbury saying about this -- muy guess is that they are telling Stormin' Norm and Jimbo Mathias not to touch this hot potatoe.

Page Elmore's attitude is 'go along to get along..'
Don't expect much from him.

Mathias is so (in)effective that he's been trying for 2 years now to get 5 lousy slot machines into the Elks Club in OC (as all other Counties permit) unsuccessfully. King Mike Miller doesn't waste his time listening to the Eastern Shore chicken house twerps like Mathias, Elmore, and Conway.

The purpose of government is to be a vehicle whereby the very wealthy embezzle money via political favortism.

They over spend on purpose. It is not an accident. They aren't "bad at it".

This bill will fail. It does not separate residential and commercial property. It works fine for residential property but commercial property is valued based upon the potential to produce income. This is how it is bought and sold. There are not many transfers and to have a stagnant value on income producing property is foolish.

Thank you for a reasoned response, 7:21.

The bill also allows for inequity in taxes. It is based not on the value of the property but the value when purchased.
