This is why SUVs should be outlawed for single drivers and for personal use. There is no reason that someone needs to be driving a 2 ton hunk of steel (3979 lbs-4321 lbs depending on trim level) with a center of mass/momentum that high off the ground. Poor guy in the car didn't stand a chance.

The Camry is actually a "heavy" car at 3,142 lbs. but still 1000lbs difference and center of mass makes a big difference.

Unless you're a construction foreman hauling around a crew of 5 you simply DO NOT NEED a SUV. A soccer mom carrying her 2 y/o to Wal*Mart would be just fine with a 4 door sedan. Plus the payments would be $150-300 a month less and use 1/2 the amount of gas. Tons of women working out there that their wages don't even pay for the SUV payment and gas, let alone daycare etc. IDIOTS.

11:07 - Are you kidding me???
How about MANDATORY driver testing for the elderly. The elderly man pulled out in front of that SUV!
He couldn't see that SUV?? How many CARS had this man pulled out in front of before one finally hit him?
My mother is 84 and she no longer drives because she was able to ADMIT on her OWN that her capacities were no longer good enough for her to feel safe driving. God bless her! Now we don't have to worry that she will end up in an article like this.
God Bless the man who died in this accident AND the man who hit him but I'll tell you, I'm getting sick and tired of the old people out on the roads who have forgotten how to drive or no longer have enough capacity left to be ABLE to drive!

on the other hand, this is why the elderly shouldn't be able to drive past a certain age. Its not the SUV's fault that the car didn't yield the right of way.

While I understand what you are saying 11:07 let me point out that the driver of the Camry was at fault, unfortunately. Had the driver of the Highlander been driving a smaller vehicle he may not have walked away from the accident either. My thoughts and prayers are with both families.

And the 86 year old man running the stop signs has no fault in this either??? Who was hit by a 56 year old man in a highlander, not even a full size SUV...go hug a tree somewhere else

Idiots ???
How bout everyone just drives the exact same vehicle ?
That make you happy ?
My everyday vehicle weighs 7500#
so Please don't run a stop sign in front of me..
I might be on the way to walmart with my 3 yr old
By the way, my 8 cyl diesel burns cleaner than your 4 cyl gas

Give me a break! You don't NEED air conditioning in your house either, but you want it & I'm sure you have it! Not saying that bigger vehicles don't cause more damage, but I think the issue her is an 84yr that probably should not have been driving!!! I am all for retesting drivers that are 70+

WTF? We have the right to drive whatever we please and can afford! The driver that died was at fault, he pulled out in front of the SUV.

I will echo 8:38's sentiments but I must agree, some people just shouldn't be driving SUV's. I get especially upset at parents who run out to get their teenager an SUV because "their safer". We were almost ran off the road by one of these teens (we drive a scion) the other day. Many people just don't have the skill/capacity to drive such a heavy vehicle.

A man died. Another man involved in that accident will have that memory forever. And famlies of both men will have your comments to deal with and remember.

Rant somewhere else. Have some compassion.

My condolences to the families.
