Disaster Do-Gooders Can Actually Hinder Help

Uninvited volunteers, useless donations can cost money, time — and lives

No question, the two church-goers from New Jersey had the best intentions in the world when they arrived in Port-au-Prince this week to help victims of Haiti’s killer earthquake.

Trouble was, that was all they had in a land where food, water, shelter and transportation are at a desperate premium, said Laura Blank, a disaster communications manager on the ground for World Vision, a Christian humanitarian aid group with long ties to the country.

“They seemed very eager and very passionate about helping the people of Haiti, but they didn’t have a ride to get out of the airport,” said Blank, who had to direct the pair to assistance.

Salisbury Fire Department and Deputy Chief Bill Gordy is an example of this. He took his men and equipment to Louisiana after Katrina hit. He was not requested and refused to turn around after the feds found out he was on the way. Once they arrived he freelanced and bypassed the system. There are bonified USAR teams that handle disasters like this.

"Uninvited volunteers, useless donations can cost money, time — and lives"

This is exactly what happened when the idiots from the Salisbury Fire Department invited themselves to travel down to New Orleans during Katrina at taxpayers expense. The SFD got a call from FEMA stating they weren't needed and they were not invited. Bill Gordy took it upon himself to continue South anyway. They didn't even make it to New Orleans because they new they weren't needed. They went to another area and freelanced because Bill Gordy had a friend there. They were also stealing fuel from potable federal fueling stations and putting in fake pin numbers. So the affects of Bill Gordy's stealing as a representative of the Salisbury Fire Department goes way back to 2005 and beyond. It's true, ask Acting Deputy Fire Chief Dru Bragg he was one of them that went down there.

Why didnt the public know about our fire departments actions ? This sounds bad and the citizens of dalisbury probably paid for it.

stealing fuel? that's a felony since you haven't paid the federal tax on it! smart move! geeez! if I ever have to go to prison i want it to be for something the other prisoners will respect me for! not stealing gas! lmao!

This is why FEMA and DHS hav given money to fund groups like the Wicomico County CERT teams. Take a look for yourself and get some training while you're there!

CERT= Community Emergency Response Team (or something like that)...
