Spending Spree Sacrifices State Workers
Spending Spree Sacrifices State Workers
Annapolis – Maryland’s Democrat Governor, Martin O’Malley, announced dramatic reductions in his budget this week and he still needs to cut at least another $1.2 billion. Hardest hit so far, are State workers and their families, hundreds of whom will have lost their jobs in these tough economic times.
“He blew through former Republican Governor Robert Erhlich’s $1.5 billion dollar surplus in a post-election spending spree; then immediately raised taxes in a Special Legislative Session so that he could spend $1.2 billion more,” said Dr. Jim Pelura, Chairman of the MDGOP. “And if you thought the Democrats were only going to tax the rich to pay for their excess, think again.”
At the August 26th meeting of the Board of Public Works, Democrat Governor Martin O’Malley announced economic furloughs for non-24/7 State employees (approximately 67,000 of Maryland’s 80,000 dedicated work force.)
Those earning less than $40,000 will be required to take five-day temporary salary reduction days. The highest paid employees, defined by Governor O’Malley as those making more than $40,000, will be required to lose up to two weeks of pay. "Balancing the State budget on the backs of State employees, making as little as $40,000 per year, is no way to run a State," said Dr. Pelura. “The plan which Governor O’Malley calls his ‘flexible progressive furlough’ actually means his furloughs for State employees will get progressively worse.” Still projected for FY 2011 is a budget shortfall in excess of one billion more dollars.
"The Governor's efforts to date to balance the State budget have been short-sighted, inadequate and unbalanced," commented Delegate Steve Schuh of Anne Arundel County. "His plan relies on accounting gimmicks and other one-time fixes, amounts to only a small fraction of the nearly $2.5 billion fundamental imbalance in the budget and places the burden far too heavily on State employees and their families.”

It's gotta happen. Let the chips falls. Salary Tiering reductions-a very reasonable idea.
O'Malley's leadership is indicative of the liberal's role in running government. One merely needs to look at those states and municipalities that are currently being run by the Democrats and liberals as opposed to those being run by conservatives to see the difference. The review will disclose those states and municipalities that are being led by a conservative majority, are in fact, experiencing a healthier financial climate overall, and are not putting their financial shortfalls on the backs of the employees. The conservative approach to government seems to produce better results time and again. When will we ever learn?
Is the Governor planning to take 5# days off too????
Is anyone surprised? This was very predictably. The only thing that I don't understand is why some reasonably intellingent people will still vote for democrats. We all know what the democratic party stands for and that is tax and spend. Well folks, the days of spending are over and hold on to your wallets, your taxes are going up. If you like it, vote democratic, if you don't like it, vote republican.
well you can also look at this if you read the artical you will notice everyone below 100,000 will have to take between 5 to 9 days off no pay but the ones that make over 100.000 only have to take just one more day than the lower payed people well why dont we have the ones that make over 100.000 take 15 days off no pay and let the lower payed people keep there money. why try to balance the budget off the backs of the lower payed people.
That's right Maryland, keep on voting for the Dems, what a great state!
shoot take away the millions and millions they spend on inmates every year.
Maybe O'Malley can just buy up some more land for to be green space. That always help things.
Yeah well I have to put my life on the line everyday. Working with murderers, rapists, child molesters
and drug dealers. Yes I work in prison. Not only did I not get my yearly raise I had waited one year to get because all raises were not given this year because salaries were frozen, Then on top of that I find out they are cutting my pay for the rest of the fiscal year. On other words until July 2010. Then there are no guarantees that will go back to our regular pay or maybe freeze it for more years or cut it again. How would you like your pay cut as they charge you more for your benefits. Thank you governor O malley. Why don't you try taking some of the programs away from the prisoners instead of us workers trying to feed our families. No we can't do that. We would rather give the inmates more and take away for the officers.
