Incident: False Statement

Narrative: On 26 November 2009 at 1:50 AM, a patrol deputy from the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office stopped an individual walking on Johnson Road in an inappropriate manner. When the deputy asked the individual his name, he provided one to the deputy, which would later be discovered to be false. Upon running a warrant check on the provided information, the deputy discovered a warrant and placed the subject under arrest.

Upon searching the now arrested individual, the deputy located an identification card that provided the individual’s correct name, James A. Maddox. When asked why he lied about his name, Maddox told the deputy he believed a warrant existed for him. Upon running a warrant check under the correct name, no warrant was discovered.

Maddox was transported to the Central Booking Unit where he was booked for Making a False Statement to a Law Enforcement Officer. Maddox was processed and taken in front of the District Court Commissioner. After an initial appearance, Maddox was released by the Commissioner on Personal Recognizance.

Suspect: Male Juvenile, 16, Mardela Springs, MD

Narrative: On 26 November 2009 at 7:39 PM, a deputy from the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office responded investigate an altercation that occurred inside the Maple Shade Youth facility in the 23000 block of Ocean Gateway in Mardela Springs. Upon arrival, the deputy learned that a 16 YOA resident came into the kitchen area of the facility, grabbed a pumpkin pie and threw it at the back of one of the counselor’s heads. The deputy saw pieces of the pumpkin pie in the hair and on the back of the counselor which corroborated the account. The deputy placed the juvenile under arrest.

The deputy transported the juvenile to the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office where the Department of Juvenile services was notified of the arrest. Upon informing the Department of Juvenile Services of the incident, the arresting deputy was instructed to release the juvenile to the Youth Facility pending formal court action.

Incident: Reckless Endangerment

Narrative: On 27 November 2009 at 1:22 AM, a patrol deputy from the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office was traveling on West Road in the area of Westbrook Commons when the deputy observed five young individuals walking in the area. As the deputy came closer to the individuals, the deputy saw what he believed to be a handgun pointed towards him. The deputy heard what he recognized as shots of air and the deputy believed that the weapon was actually an air soft gun. After this occurred, all five individuals ran from the deputy.

The deputy along with additional patrol units, located and detained two of the individuals involved in this incident. It should be noted that both individuals detained were dressed in red from head to toe. Their clothing along with other indicators, pointed to their involvement with a gang.

Both juveniles were transported to the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office. Both were released to parents pending formal court action. The investigation will be continuing in order to identify the other three individuals involved, including the one who pointed the air soft gun at the deputy.

Narrative: On 27 November 2009 at 10:53 AM, a patrol deputy from the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office responded to investigate a burglary in the 22000 block of Royal Oak Road in Quantico. The resident had been out of town for a few days and returned home to discover his pick-up truck, camper, and house had been forcibly burglarized. The deputy observed a window smashed out of the truck, the camper door open and a rear window to the house smashed out. Stolen during the burglary was a Nintendo Game Cube and 18 games, a CD stereo and other small electronics. It was also discovered that whoever broke into the truck tried to steal it, as evident by the tampering with the ignition and the steering column.

During the course of the investigation, the victim stated he recalled a young man who lived at the nearby Maple Shade Youth Facility approached the victim in his yard just prior to leaving and asked if the victim had any work the young man could perform. The victim also recalled how this young man commented on the different items present in the victim’s yard, including the camper.

The deputy responded to the Maple Shade Youth facility, also located in the 22000 block of Royal Oak Road and located the resident in question. Upon speaking with the counselor, the deputy learned that this resident and two others had left the facility without permission recently. Upon further investigation by the deputy, the deputy recovered all of the property stolen from the victim and obtained admissions of guilt from each of the three juveniles.

During the search for the stolen property, one of the facility’s counselors located marijuana and four smoking devices hidden in the room of one of the juveniles involved.

Two of the juveniles were charged on a referral and released to the Maple Shade Youth Facility pending court action. A third was transported and held at the Lower Shore Children’s Center pending formal court action.
