The Country House Is Prejudice

I attempted to shop at The Country House in Salisbury today, but they did not want my business. I have a newborn which requires using a carrier with a stroller that holds a carrier. The Country House forbids you bringing in your own stroller, stating that they will provide one for you. The stroller's they provide for you are umbrella strollers. Newborns are not big enough to be put in an umbrella stroller.

When I brought this to the attention of a cashier, her attitude was oh well. She stated that is the policy. The Country House is too big to attempt to lug a newborn around without a stroller. As I was leaving, the cashier smugly told me to have a Merry Christmas. Gee, how nice of her. A few years ago I remember a not-so-friendly cashier. and stayed a way for a while. So much for trying to patronize a local business. Needless to say, I will never patronize The Country House ever again, and I will not recommend it to others. So nice to learn that The Country House is prejudice of little babies. I guess the owner's children are too old to remember the days of getting around with a little infant. They also seem to be prejudice of the handicapped as well. There is no ramp, only stairs to enter the front of the store

It's not prejudice dummy. And I don't see a name on this, so I imagine this is probably some crybaby who is exaggerating the story. I'd like to hear from the business, because it's too easy for some jerk to come in and write a letter anonymously and bash a business.

The owners are supposed to be Christians but I hear from former employees they are not family friendly and difficult to work for.

You are having to follow a policy in place because people steal and hide items in strollers. Whoever heard of being prejudiced against newborns? I do agree about the ramp though.

Leave your kid at home.

Get a babysitter when you go shopping. No one wants to hear a screaming kid while they are trying to get things done.

I stopped going to the Country House because their prices are WAY out of line - double the price of most everything in the store. And yes, the clerks act like they are in a frenzy at the check out and its not even busy! They do have nice things but with the prices, I cannot afford to purchase anything there anymore. The stuff that is on sale in the bargain section looks like it came out of storage from years ago!

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can we whine and complain a little more please....

How is the Country House prejudiced against babies? Didn't the OP say that they provide strollers?

Having an infant does not require a monster-sized stroller. There is a contraption called a Snuggli that allows you to carry the baby against your body, leaving your hands free. There are also slings that cost less and are even easier to use.

I think there is a ramp at the side of the building on Main Street, not to far from the main entrance....
look around and get all facts right before bashing..country house is not walmart. it is a finer quality store.

This is one of the dumbest things I've read in a long time. Did it ever cross your mind that the stroller policy is to reduce shoplifting and/or reduce the chance that your stroller will bump into things and break them? I know some parents with little kids think they are the center of the world, but you really aren't. Have a Merry Christmas!

Either way, its still against the law, and against ADA not to have handicap parking or ramps to the door... Call it in and get them a fine for it I say...

There is a ramp and I am sure the policy is to reduce shoplifting and also to ensure that the size of the stroller is appropriate for the aisleways...much of the merchandise in the store is quite fragile.

Anon 7:56...What does being a Christian have to do with anything? Christians aren't perfect people. They are just like everyone else in there behavior. The thing that seperates Christians from non-Christians is that they are saved, meaning that they have accepted Jesus as their Savior and believe they are going to heaven because of this. Christians are still sinners, just like everyone else. We have our faults and sometimes our behavior is not representative of the behavior we strive for.

I completely agree with you. Although my family is grown, I remembering experiencing the same thing in several stores. I had two babies 13 months apart and I had a double stroller to wheel them in. Because I was young with three small kids, they assumed that I was either a welfare recipient or out to steal something.

Its the principle of it. Regardless of the fragile merchandise....babies are more fragile. Some mothers choose not to farm their kids out to childcare and many do not have family in the area to help. A true christian organization should support that.

I say all the mothers with strollers load your babies up and go shop at the country house today.

I have met both the owners. He is VERY nice but his wife I have heard is not very nice and very hard to work for. I had a friend who had a major argument with "Norma" the owner over hand lotion. She needs to learn the customer is always right. She lost a customer there too. However, there are alot of items in this store and usually alot of people especially this time of year and I think it is extremely stupid to carry a full size stroller and carrier inside a store like that. There are items you can put an infant in and carry right in front of you or come when you can leave the baby home with a babysitter.

9:31 - Oh, please, the customer is frequently wrong, and it does businesses no good to cater to self-important customers who see every potential slight as a reason to take their business elsewhere.

But, we agree on the stroller issue!

To the couple of people at the top of this post, witch are probably MEN! How do you expect a new month to carry a newborn baby around a HUGE store like that and not have a stroller the strollers they provide a newborn can NOT sit in because they can not hold their head up! i cant belive someone would call this lady a cry baby you all are rude and care about no one but yourself if the problem doesnt pertain to you then keep your mouth SHUT! And to the sender of this post i agree with you i think it was wrong of them to treat you this way i would have kept walking and done my shopping and not paid them a bit of attention, and when they gave me crap i would have told them to call the police!

Thank you and merry christmas

ALSO to all the other ppl who are talking about leaving the baby home or not wanting to hear a baby cry while their trying to get stuff done screw you because thats life just because your to much a GRINCH to have kids doesnt mean other people dont enjoy and love them, Gosh this makes me so mad to hear all of these ppl bash this lady for VOICEING her opinion and as far as shoplifting goes Let them in Check when they come in and CHECK when they leave its as simple as that!

This is just crazy. Don't complain. If you don't like it, don't go back.

There IS a handicapped ramp...its on the front side of the store.

The stoller issue is because, people STEAL and shoplifters have ruined that benefit for everyone.

Also, they provide strollers so that you can still bring your little one in...and manuever easily through their isles. The HUGE cadillac stroller is nice but does not work well in the store.

There are signs on the doors stating the policy...if you cant live with it, simply stated, shop somewhere else!

And Merry Christmas to you too!!

11:03,
It makes you so mad that people are voicing their opinion about this woman voicing her opinion? Do you recognize the irony?

There is alway Tull Brother's in Seaford, De. It is in a remodeled Barn environment and they offer the same type of stuff AND there IS room for your baby stroller AND you are greeted with a smile AND they have the most wonderful christmas cookies. It is worth the drive.

Hmmm...I didn't realize that all kids scream when they go shopping. I also didn't realize that every mother is a thief. Before you know it, women won't be allowed to carry their purse into the store for fear that they will shoplift. Shoplifting occurs in stores whether you have a stroller or not. Maybe the country house should just have everyone remove their clothes before entering cause someone may be able to stash something down their shirt or pants. How nice, that if someone is handicapped they have to go clear away from the parking lot to get into the building. I guess we have just learned that they not only not value mothers with children but handicapped people either, so maybe all moms and handicapped people should boycot!!

Boycott or stop complaining...I have 4 kids and hate strollers, the backpack thingies are so much easier and lighter than actually getting the huge stroller out of the car trunk or back of an SUV. You shouldn't have a newborn out in this kind of weather anyway. Wait til they are about 6 months before you bring them out in public and avoid the germs.

Clearly you all dont shop there much...the handicap ramp is on the front corner of the store...adjacent to the parking lot...where there are sidewalks..and VERY accesabile to handicapped individuals just like myself. I can get in an out with my walker with a lot of ease.

If you dont want to shop there...so be it SHUT UP and go somewhere else!

This store is so cluttered & hard to move around in with just a small shoulder handbag. Yes, I have experienced not so friendly personnel. I purchase quite abit of Vera Bradley & do so at VP behind The Centre because Country House doesn't do the specials Vera Bradley notifies customers about. The only reason I even go near Country House is to go to Acorn Market located in one of the house in the back side of the main building. Jill has awesome food. If you haven't tried Acorn Market, it's a must.
