WOOHOO we have not had a big snow for a very long time. Bring it on!!! I will get my husband to take me to the mall in the morning where I plan to finish my shopping, have a great lunch and then come home.... for dinner. Sunday will be a good day to wrap those presents. I am a late shopper and always have been. Sure hope that I can find what everyone on my list wants at this late date. I don't think there is as much to select from this year from what I have seen over the past few weeks. Oh well, it is not all about the presents right? ...wrong.. just ask any 5 or 9 year old grandson!!!
I saw Delaware road crews out spraying the roads with salt. How is it that I saw nothing happening in Maryland? They have known about this for a few days now and I see no prevention on their part. I'm supposed to be prepared but they do what, nothing. Delaware has no tax and yet Maryland cant clear a snow covered road with high taxes. Pretty pathetic.

1:30am, just got home, was able to drive safely at 34mph in MD, 47mph in DE - why does MD suck so bad at everything, as much as they tax people they should be able to afford to do better.
Only saw 1 in the ditch, a 4x4 pickup - please people if you drive a pickup or suv, stay home tomorrow!
My rear-wheel drive sports car does ok as long as less than 3" of snow on roadway (it's only 4" off the ground) - tell you the best vehicle for driving in snow? - a 1993 Dodge Spirit! (front wheel drive cars rock)

You don't pre-spray the road with salt to prevent ice. The salt only works on the ice/snow already fallen. It also only works when the temperature is above a certain minimum.
My husband is one of the contractors that works out of the Salisbury SHA (subcontractor) and was called out early this morning. The state trucks were out overnight.
I implore people to try to stay off the roads until these guys get them somewhat cleared. Please be mindful of the dangerous job these guys have and don't make it more dangerous for yourselves.

Pre- salting the roads would take away all the guys' overtime and night / weekend bonus time. This is a rare event, and a good disaster should never be wasted in the name of safety and common sense!

Did you hear OBAMA SAYS BECAUSE OF WEATHER REASONS WILL RETURN TO WASHINGTON BEFORE A FINAL VOTE AT UN SUMMIT HaHa so is Speaker Pelosi AND crew leaving global warming trip in Copenhagen. Maybe now they agree with me "global warming" is a natural phenomenon, man's destructive nature to our eco system is not.
Those that say nature is doing what nature does are right. We were a tropic planet prior to the ice age and we are returning to it. However, we are also helping this process accelerate at a rate that may hurt us instead of allowing for us to adopt to it.
Poisons, pollution, uncontrolled forresting are taking a toll on nature.

What are the roads like out there on the entire shore? Are the malls and walmart open?
Everything is usually open unless there is a state of emergency. Great time for shopping! The roads in south Salisbury, where I live, are just slushy.

7"+ in Easton. The roads aren't too bad all things considered but the intersections have huge piles of slushy snow in them so turning onto a new road requires some caution. I had a blast driving around and will go out later, too!
For the people with the big 4x4 pick-em-up trucks, you are not invincible. They are equipped with a special tool to help them move around in conditions like this, but 4 and all wheel drive do not compensate for stupid. If you are an idiot, stay home.
6:46 having moved here from the midwest I can tell you that spraying a salt solution BEFORE the storm is a common practice. I remember seeing crews spraying days before a storm. Bridges and highly populated roads mostly but it was better than no pre-treatment like we get here. The MD part of the shore is notorious for bad public works services. Ditches overflowing, edge lines on the road covered with leaves spray painted over, bad snow prep/removal and bad crime prevention. It hasnt snowed that much but the roads are being cleared mostly by the cars driving over the slush. The temp has gone up as well which is melting whats out there.
I just got back from a small trip to Delmar and the roads are fine. If you slide off the road or are having trouble in this "huge" snow storm you need to improve your driving skills. In the 20 miles I just drove, 3 trucks were in ditches, haha. I thought ppl around here were the "best" drivers.
The problem, especially here, is if you apply salt ahead of the storm you potentially will lose tons of salt and thousands of dollars if, and normally when, it rains first and the salt is washed off the roads ahead of the snow. There is no telling whether the first precipitation will be snow or rain. If the SHA applied salt then it rained, people would be complaining about the waste. It's a no-win situation on the Eastern Shore.
I moved to Florida in the Fall. I miss the cold already. Not Salisbury, but the cold.
12:46 salt isnt always spread, it can be sprayed onto road surfaces. DE does this and so do other states. It adheres to the road surface and isnt easily washed off. Go visit any midwestern city and see how well the roads are cleared after MAJOR snowstorms. I love the fact the fact that the mall refuses to close early and people are being force to make the choice of driving in this mess and losing their jobs. Really how many people are going shopping tonight that the mall needs tp\o be open to 11pm??

That may be what the SHA in Salisbury is telling you but that is NOT how they do it across the bridge. My husband and his father drove for 20 years for SHA. You get the salt down on the road first. It needs the cars to churn it up and melt the snow as its falling. Once the snow falls over the salt it starts to melt as traffic goes over it. Make it alot easier to push the snow off the roads that way. Just throwing salt on the road will do nothing without the friction from the cars going over it.
7:30 We do stuff the backwards way on the shore. Snow removal sucks here maybe 6:46 finally spilled the beans as to why it does. Since we dont get alot of snow here you'd think that the local road crews would take advice from surrounding areas that have experience. No, that would be too easy. Spray salt before, have cleared roads throughout the storm. Plow as needed. Seems pretty simple to me but as usual the local laziness will prevail and local roads will be snow covered until the sun melts it. Tax dollars hard at work.
