Day trip to the national mall or national zoo. Take metro rail in from New Carrlton (real easy to ride) everything is free-Smithsonians, zoo, landmarks- you could do it for $150 tops if you are frugal and the kids can do with pictures as souveniers.
Just did VA Beach with help from priceline. Got nice, but not ocean front, hotel (Crowne Plaza - Va Beach) for $55 a night. Did Norfolk Zoo & Spirit Rover naval base cruise one day...Ocean Breeze waterpark and the beach the next. Not dirt cheap, but family budget friendly. For really cheap fun nothing beats Washington DC where most museums and the zoo are free, but in the heat DC can be a killer.
I just took 2 grandkids ages 5 and 10 to Lancaster. We rode around the countryside and saw how the Amish live. that was an eye opener. There is also Dutch Wonderland and train rides, buggy rides and it is 3+ hours from Salisbury. Leave at 7:00 and be home by 10:00 it will be well worth the trip.
Depends on what you consider inexpensive! My inexpensive is a nice camping trip. Someone elses inexpensive might be a weekend at Knobel's amusement park in PA with a rental cabin. Others have suggested going to DC to the National Mall, we did that back in April and I have to say the crowds and chaos made it feel less like a get away and more like a chore. Tubing down the Potomac river is also fun, takes about 3 hours so it leaves plenty of time to do other things in the area.
Great Wolf Lodge in Williamsburg is not too expensive. it is a hotel and indoor waterpark all in one. about a three hour drive from salisbury. also there is alot to do in the Williamsburg area if you wanted to leave the resort for a bit. took my kids there a few years ago and they never wanted to leave the place.
I second Knoebels! free admission, free parking, inexpensive rides (their wooden coaster, Phoenix, is in the top 10 of wooden coasters in the US and costs about $2 to ride.) they have won the Golden ticket for best park food for something like 10 years in a row. Its in Elysburg, pa, about a 5 hour drive..
