Mardela Bands Earn High Marks In Shenandoah Event

Mardela High School Symphonic Band and Warrior Marching Band Earn Outstanding Marks in Shenandoah Event

The Mardela High School Symphonic Band and Warrior Marching Band traveled to Winchester, Va., for the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival May 1 and 2 and got their best marks in a decade.

On May 1, the Symphonic Band received 2nd place in its class at the Concert Band Competition held at Shenandoah University. In this activity, the band performed a mini concert of three selections that were judged and ranked by three critics. Currently, the Symphonic Band has 27 wind players and 10 percussionists.

On the same day, the Warrior Marching Band received 1st place in its class at the Fireman’s Parade. The Marching Warriors is a grade 6-12 ensemble currently featuring high school winds (28), percussion (13), middle school poms (10) and majorettes (3), and combined middle and high school flags (15), honorguard and banner. Band members performed “Don’t Sit Under The Apple Tree (With Anyone Else But Me)” to honor the Apple Blossom Festival. Many roadside audience members were seen singing along with the band.

On May 2, the Warrior Marching Band received 1st place in its class at the Grand Feature Parade. This the best showing of the Mardela Bands in Band Director Cory Boltz’s 10-year tenure at Mardela Middle and High School. Each year, members of the Warrior Marching Band are sought out by festival officials and regular audience members who tell them that they look forward to their regular appearance. This year, the band met the Mayor and Mayoress of Winchester, England, who were impressed by the band and band members' respectful deportment.

Mardela Band staff, in addition to Boltz, includes Bridget Prettyman of Hebron, Bandfront Instructor; Vickie Catlin, Crystal White and Michelle Wright of Hebron, Poms and Majorettes Instructors; and Marilyn Schneider of Sharptown, Percussion Instructor.

The school and its band staff were especially pleased and grateful that the estimated $250 cost per student to make the Apple Blossom Festival trip was entirely covered through the Mardela Band-Aides Inc.'s Saturday Night Bingo and BingoMania. The Band-Aides covered the cost of transportation, hotel accommodations and evening meals for both band students and chaperones.

The Grand Feature parade is the 5th largest parade held in the United States featuring bands from Maine, New York, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, & Virginia and to have "Lil' Ole'" Mardela High School placed 1st in both parades in the highest categories for each parade is just great!!!!! Wicomico County should be proud!! They also placed 1st for bandfront & 2nd for Drum Major. GREAT WORK BAND MEMBERS & BANDFRONT!! A LITTLE HARD WORK REALLY DOES PAY OFF!! Congrats to the Seniors. We are all pround of everyone of you.

Congradulations Mardela, Its glad to see us back on top. I think this is the first time we have placed in Apple Blossom since i was a member in the early 90's.

Again, Congrats, that parade was always hard, and harder still to win.

I think this is great!

However, I would like to know why they never choose to participate in the Delmar Christmas Parade when I know they are asked every year!

Not just these bands, but the other schools as well!
Wouldn't have cost you like that to perform locally!

Again, congratulations!

Once again the Warrior Band excels. Stop by and look at all the trophies this band has won in the last 30 years. A tradition of excellence! From a former band member and proud parent of a current band member. Good things do come from the little "hick" school.

GO MHS! We really worked hard this year to do as well as we did. I can attest to Billy A's comment about not winning since the 90's. I graduated in 2000, and I believe the last time we won was maybe my 8th or 9th grade year. It's great to be back with the band as their percussion instructor! They made myself, as well as all of the other instructors proud! Come see us at the Mardela Heritage Day Parade this Saturday! And be sure to come play some bingo at Bingomania 50!!!

4:25 pm - the reason we do not go to the Delmar Christmas parade is because it is on the same day as one of our other competitive parades that we have regularly attended, and I believe that the Delmar parade is non-competitive.

By the way - the Delmar parade does award trophies and is held on the 1st Saturday in December.

I am drum captain not major in the percussion for the Mardela Band, and I am so proud of how well we played at Apple Blossom. I am so happy every one tried there hardest and I hope that this means that the Mardela band is coming back and that we will do just as well in years to come. Go Warriors.

WAY TO GO MARDELA. I don't know if anyone else has notice this but in the past few years Mardela has stepped up and not just talking about the band! I remember marching the Apple Blossom Parade my freshman year. What a weekend I was trumpet for stage and symbols for marching. I believe we placed that year as well.
