That sure does seem to be an awful lot of appointments in meager economic times!
Smaller government? I don't think so!

SALISBURY, June 7

Wicomico County is currently seeking residents interested in serving on a panel making recommendations on how much the next County Council should be paid.

The Compensation and Allowance Commission meets early during the fourth year of each Council's term to study salary and other compensation to be paid to Council members of the succeeding. Any recommendations this panel makes, if accepted, will not take effect until December 2006.

The 11-member Commission currently has a number of vacancies that will be filled at the County Council meeting of June 21.

Applicants should submit a letter of interest to Wicomico County Public Information Officer George Roache by mail at PO Box 870, Salisbury, Maryland, 21803-0870, by fax at (410) 548-4803, or email at groache@wicomicocounty.org, no later than Wednesday, June 15.

I sincerely hope that a couple of these people aren't the only ones with those names in Wicomico....
Richard Culver? The one that I know isn't the kind of person who should be making ANY kind of decisions like this.

Some of the above comments are quotes from previous years, but the idea is correct. Neither the County Executive, nor the County Council can do anything to increase their own salaries.
The County Charter requires a Commission be appointed every 4 years to consider whether the County Executive and Council members who will be elected in the next election (2010)should receive any increase in pay. The Commission looks at the economic situation, what pay is for similar offices in other jurisdictions, etc. The Commission makes a recommendation to the County Council. The Council can accept the recommendation, or reduce it, but they cannot raise it. It will take affect after the next election.
