Sorry I'm confused...3/17/09?
It's time to make this entire COUNTY safer.
Let me put it this way, when my daughter came home from school a few years back while a junior in high school and proceeded to instruct me that Salisbury was #10 in the nation for crime (per capita), I told her that she'd lost her mind, that it wasn't true, couldn't be true. I also continued to disbelieve it for a long time.
I believe it now and it's a damned sad state of affairs when such a rural area, and we're still pretty rural, can't keep watch on our own.
There was a time I was indifferent about locking my doors, especially with my neighbors as they were always home and watchful and we lived pretty much out in the middle of nowhere. In the intervening time, houses have cropped up all around and the quality of those new neighbors are pretty questionable, the cops visit with enough regularity for concern, several times to our home for theft and another for teen vandalism -- no reason, 'just because,' was what Hamilton, his middle name that he couldn't spell at aged 15 told the state trooper. The trooper had the boy, now sans his pack of buddies, to clean up the mess and wanted to take him in.
Hubby opted for the old fashioned method, "We're neighbors, he'll watch out for me and mine because he knows should anything else happen, he'll be the first suspect." It worked and well. That little pack has been extremely well behaved and respectful over the last few years as they are growing older. Those kids also know we are WATCHING.
There needs to be a grassroots wave, one of personal responsibility by all residents, not just within Salisbury, but the entire county, to step up and help deter crime. Don't hide, if you see something, report it. If you are not in fear for your life, shout out, often that's enough that the perpetrators know that someone SAW something and will run off.
Don't be a victim--EVER, if you can help it. Don't let others become one either.
Think about this...back in the day,(hush up I know what you are thinking)-- if a neighbor or any adult saw a child or teen breaking the law or looking suspicious, they stepped in. People are reluctant to do that now, either for fear of their lives or lawsuits.
I'm an advocate of open carry w/permit. You threaten my life or my family, do it at your own peril.
Who ever does not beleive that Salisbury does not have a gang problem needs to be at Skateland / Mitchells Martial Arts building now / tonight. I was going to drop off my Daughter and two of her girlfreinds and it look like gang heaven. I refused to let them out of the vehicle. No security, no SPD with that type atmosphere. I see more in that area when the College is in. Is something wrong with this picture? The youth of the area is tossed to the curb at one of the few places they can go and enjoy themselves. The College students can be watched like a hawk after its pray. This tells me the SPD does not want to let their presence known when the gangs are prevenlent. This is an example of the incompentence of the SPD.
HELLO....! Maybe someone should take to the officers on the street to find out what the problems are, rather that just listening to what chiefy has to say about it. I'm sure the residents would have some good imput, but how about those actually working the streets? That's where the problem is. Don't rely on those that have no clue.
Thank you, Jim Ireton, for standing up for the citizens on crime. Gary Comegys has only repeated some of your ideas and attacked your other ideas. He's offered nothing new and made it sound like citizens are to blame for not stopping crime.
Jim Ireton has my vote!
wonder if my child will have a sub again because he is not in school.
How ANYONE other than a landlord or a developer could vote for Comegys over Ireton is beyond belief.
I believe in Ireton
Anon 6:16 maybe it is you that should be in school along with your child. This is scheduled for 4:45, long after school has ended for the day. Take that crap elsewhere.
Combine Salisbury Police Department with Wicomico County Sheriff's Office. Let Mike Lewis lead the charge to clean up this city. It will take a little time, but I bet he would have no problem taking over.
Suspending three good officers is not going to help this city fight crime at all! now we are down 3 on the good side!
6:16,
What school is open after 4 pm? Idiot.
I too was taking my daughter to the Mitchells open skate night and thought there were gangs in the parking lot. I would not let my daughter go. I think that is a bad area that skating place is in and I just get a creepy feeling there at night. Motherly instinct I guess. I wish Crown would bring back skating. That is a nice family place that I feel safe at. Plus them people at Mitchells creep me out too.
I'm not sure why I always read about what a sweet deal developers get in Salisbury, because I am a developer and I've been treated like scum by them. The dept. heads who are responsible for overseeing development don't know what each other is doing, and are unconcerned about how unnecessary delays (we're talking years here) increase costs and therefore increases prices to eventual buyers. I hope and pray that the new mayor cleans house...or at least calls for a short moratoriam to get his people all reading from the same book. I've done some developments in several other municipalities, and frankly, this is the worst by a landslide. Seriously. When I hear about all the preferential treatment developers get from the Tilghman administration, I wonder who they're talking about...the old mall, I guess. Maybe some of the others, but NOT all of them. I can say that for certain. If this wasn't such a nasty environment already, I'd be happy to sign my name. I've been afraid to complain for fear that the delays would be even more prolonged, if that is possible. It's not like they're so busy that they can't get to it. We all know building starts have nearly come to a halt.
This is just plain old arrogance added to ignorance. And I guess they believe they have job security. I hope they're wrong.
There's a reason the event started at 4:15 with Jim arriving at 4:25 - so he wouldn't have to leave school early. Elementary and intermediate schools in Wicomico County close at 3:30 and teachers' duty day ends at 4 p.m. He didn't even leave the school early!
Westside Intermediate students are excused at 3:30, and teachers may leave at 4:00. Clearly 4:45 is outside the official school day although most teachers spend 3-4 hours on schoolwork during the afternoon/evening. Don't worry about teachers putting in enough hours.
Anonymous developer, you are obviously not one of Barrie's friends.
You're right about the bureaucracy for approvals. Stinks. Ireton knows it and plans to get on it.
Comegys knows it and talks about efficiency, but he's the guy that pushed for the extra electrical inspector. What a boondoggle.
hey concerned retiree,
look up your facts before you start badmouthing SPD. Skateland and that entire complex are OUTSIDE the city, moron. if you think there is a problem there, and least know which dept you should be talking bad about before you open your mouth.
Joe who do you think would make a good chief that you know of?
ELMER DAVIS!
