Beaglin Park Drive Problem

"Joe,

I wanted to contact you concerning something that happened to me on the way back to the office around 1:30 pm today. I was traveling the new section of Beaglin Park Dr, As I approached the RR tracks, I noticed a train coming. As it was getting closer to the crossover , the red lights and gates never engaged. I slowed down and stopped but other cars who hadn't noticed kept buzzing right through the crossover. A pickup came up beside me and had to basically slam on brakes once she realized there was a train right there. As the train was crossing over the street , the red lights started flashing and the gates dropped. By then the train's engine car was already through. The elderly woman rolled down her window and thanked me for being stopped and was quite shaken because she said" I would have never seen it if I hadn't seen you stopped" She thanked me for paying attention and said " why didn't the cross gates come down?" Told her I wasn't sure but I knew just who to email to get the word out. Thanks Joe for being our outlet when important information needs to be out there!!!!!

Thanks for the heads up. I travel that way frequently.

I've also seen it where the lights are flashing and the bars are down, with nary a train in sight! Maybe this is their fix for that? lol...

Another problem with that section of road is how wore out it is already. Take a look at the holes and cracks in the road. Look at the walk path where the white RR Crossing marks are. Neither of these are old yet they look like they are 5 years overdue for replacement.

Wasn't there a post a few months back about RR crossings? Someone was complaining how people actually slow down and stop at RR crossings? THIS IS THE REASON they slow down and look

There is a phone number on EVERY crossing you can use to report crossing issues. Try calling it next time, instead of whining about it on a blog.

Norfolk and Southern
Crossing Gates/Signals/Rough Crossings: (800) 453-2530

8:15 - this is a local safety issue. not everyone knows that number is posted there, so it is perfectly reasonable to alert people quickly and simply through the web. there is no need to be so hateful and rude. get yourself under control.

Amazing, and so many people were whining about people who slow down and check the rail crossing before crossing (well, that's how I took it, because I always slow down and check all rail crossings...) The rail companies cannot be trusted with our safety, it is a documented fact..

I agree with 8:15, what good does it do to alert 100 or so people when the problem should have been reported to someone who could fix it. I guess it is easier to complain than to work to fix the problem. 9:31 you say it is a local safety issue, all the more reason to report it to the people responsible. Blogs aren't the greatest way to communicate, no matter how much you want to kiss Joe's behind.

@9:31

Sorry, I have no time for people who are unwilling to look around and help themselves. That's not being hateful, thats called being responsible.

When you stare at the crossing not working, there is large white sign on it. Hard to miss.

Lets make sure we keep it a 'local issue', so the signal maintainers never learn about the problem, and never fix it. Next, lets blame NS for bad maintainance (well, wouldn't be too far from the truth). We could even get a grassroots campaign to stop the evil train from coming through and making all that noise, and wasting all that fuel.

But really, your post added so much to the discussion... thanks for participating. Here's your trophy for participating. Don't you feel good for calling someone else a hater.. I'll bet you'll sleep righteously tonight.

I saw that train today as i was headed home on old ocean city rd. I was stopped at the light at beaglin park and i looked down there and the train was stopped. i thought it was odd the train wasnt moving. i went on and went down parker rd. and i saw the train was now moving and the cross arms were down.

Take the curse words out and I'll post your comment.

Sorry Joe... I forgot where I was! LOL

I was trying to tell 10:19pm that the train engineer almost certainly reported the cross guard failure immediately. It dosn't hurt anyone to post the alert on this site. I'm very good at detecting whinning and I didn't sense it from this post.

Maybe the person who sent the e-mail wasn't aware that there was a number to call. Maybe he/she thought that if they e-mailed it to this blog that enough people looked at it to maybe save a live. Maybe someone would read it that would have a good idea on how to get the right people to fix it. Maybe this is one of the most valuable features of this blog - to allow people who don't know each other to communicate for the benefit of everyone. Maybe you just need some of Big Alberta's big love so some of you will stop being haters.

Bi Alberta loves everybody. Even the haters. Oops! I mean BIG Alberta. There I go tellin' on myself.

Big Alberta, I agree with you on all points... ahhh ... except the last one, sorry. It's good to get the warning out to people in the interim until the rail guys get the call and get someone out there to fix it.
and here's a tip to all; Mechanical things break all the time. Mother nature doesn't provide a wood stove to keep all electrical connections warm and toasty overnight, YOU are the one responsible for your own safety, so STOP (or slow down), LOOK, AND LISTEN for the horn!
PS, stoplights don't stop cars; PEOPLE do! Never assume.

Most people coming up to a RR crossing slow down and look both ways making sure there is NO TRAIN coming. Dont just assume. Thats whats wrong with people in the world today, Assume, Assume, Assume!!!!Didnt your parents teach you from the get go to look both ways before crossing the road. The same goes for crossing over the RR tracks. Get REAL and get RESPONSIBLE people!!!!
