BREAKING NEWS

The Mardela, Hebron and Sharptown Fire Departments are on the scene of a structure fire with lots of smoke on Sharptown Road.

I'm told they found 12 crates full of dogs on the front porch, all of them alive. I'll see what else I can find out about it and get back with you later.

UPDATE: One dog has been taken by Ambulance to the Pet ER because of smoke inhalation.

UPDATE #2: I have been told there were only 4 dogs on the front porch. All of them were Terriers. Unfortunately one of them passed away from the smoke, one was taken away by Ambulance and the others will be kept at their local Veterinarian at the Lone Star Veterinarian Hospital down the street from their home. I've been told the owner of the home isn't even aware that something had happened as of yet.

One comment by Bobby Reese was concerning because you're right, these are smaller animals not bred to be out in this kind of cold. I can tell you that the Wicomico Humane Society was on location to assist in any way possible and offered to take the animals until the owner came home. However, the Lone Star Hospital is their normal Vet and they openly offered to take the dogs in.

I happened to wake up early this morning before the sun rose and, with some quiet time on my hands, got to re-watch "No Country For Old Men"...are you telling me the sight of 12 occupied dog kennels on a porch in the heart of a cold-spell where temps with wind chill will approach zero tonight on it's own "didn't bring no help"...it took a fully engulfed structure fire? It isn't that I am afraid of these things....I just don't even like to try to wrap my mind around horrors I'll never ever be able to understand.

I have to make this kind of quick, in more concise language, because I have to be Mr. Mom in like 2 minutes. If you read my stuff, you know I am an extreme animal lover, who has always adopted shelter dogs, rather than pay a single cent to breeders/puppy mills/pet stores and such. I have neighbors on both sides who each have a single dog, as do I. I know what kind of responsibility this requires regarding feeding, grooming, vet visits, rabies shots, claw trimming etc...- and to "babysit" three large lab/shepherd mixes on "play dates". Twelve crates ANYWHERE sounds a bit concerning to me-especially in Mr. Vick times (even in certain military theaters/local bomb detection details in the military, they do not have resources/time to maintain this many dogs properly). I have to cut this short but promise to check bak later....I also agree with Joe that NY Eve is "Amateur Night" and I will be spending my nite watching the party amateurs develop frostbite in Times Square! I want to believe there is a person who not only had the heart, but the means, to support so many animals {cats are a whole other kennel of fish because they live 'more feral'} properly. But as of right now, this headline makes me a little sick to my stomach.

BTW...glad and sad to get update number two. Glad it was four dogs (which is infinitely more responsible than twelve dogs in kennels). So sorry for your loss. I hope that YOU AND YOUR FAMILY are also able to find a warm bed/peace of mind tonight as it appears the rest of your little friends are safe.

how nice that the fire dept transported a dog in their ambulance. it just shows ow much they really care and go above and beyond what is expected of them. you have my upmost respect for what you did and for what you do everyday for NO PAY!! may God bless you all.

Today was a nice, moderate temperature day, and there is no reason that all dogs couldn't be out for the day. Windy as hell, but 45 degrees. No one knows whether or not the owner brings them in at night when it gets cold. You are guessing and jumping to conclusions here. The house caught on fire when the owner was not home... maybe at work? The dogs sound like they were under roof, out of rain possibilities, and in kennels near a wall protecting them from a lot of the wind. I see no reason here to go animal freak yet. You all should wait for all the facts. The poor guy just lost his home and a good friend.

8:13,

They didn't use your tax money they used some of mine and that's o.k. with me.

A special request was put in to earmark your tax dollars for the coroners exam that will find you died from an uncaring heart of stone.

May the fleas of a thousand camels infest your crotch and your arms be too short to scratch.

Barry G. I don't know where you were keeping track of the weather, but you may have noticed it did in fact get a tad cold last night (if you were watching the cats in Times Square, by the time the ball dropped they were all too sober, frozen and had to pee to enjoy a second of it. I do not offer apologies for being concerned about the family or the animals in weather such as this. My biggest original concern was a report of TWELVE kennels full of dogs, which would have been a touch too much for any residential situation, even in sunny Acapulco. Unfortunately, there are too many people who get into "puppy mill" type breeding around here where they make a few dollars at the expense of improper care/warehousing of dogs/puppies. I am glad later updates reflected this not to be the case.

I read that the fire occurred during the day, not at midnight. Sorry, Reese Bobby, my mistake?

No big deal-as long as the dogs/family ultimately ended up in a warm bed/kennel. I just happened to have a couple moments to take a breath and play a round of golf a couple days ago....because I saw the forecast was definitely changing for the far worst. It WAS cold on my porch last night though...just ask my decorative Brass Monkey, whose lower anatomy will never be the same!
