Somerset County District Court Applicant Short list

The Judiciary website has listed the short list of candidates for the Somerset County District Court position to be vacated by Judge Hayman in December of 2008.

It appears that the State's Attorney, Kristy Hickman, and the sitting Domestic Relations Master, Robert Laird, did not make the final cut.

Does this mean Drunk Drivers might actually have something to worry about now? I had the privilege of sitting in Hayman's court and watched many people with more than one conviction and driving with revoked license, walk out with $125 fines and court costs.

How come the State's Attorney did not make the list??

Victor Laws is highly qualified for the Special Courts appointment. He's done a great job as the only federal magistrate in the lower shore

ANON 10:00 Ummmmm! Could it possibly be that she has tried so diligently to protect some of her so called crony "friends"?

Hickman is not all that experienced to warrant being selected for a judgeship position. Laird is a tee total freakin idiot.

Victor Laws? Who said anything about Vic Laws? What the hell are you smoking.

Sounds to me like the drug dealer and other criminal attorneys black balled Hickman.

Thank god that the nominating committee had the good sense not to include Hickman in the short list. It is common knowledge that she conspired with Davis Ruark to not bring any charges in the Somerset County Detention Center investigation. Drunk drivers might have actually had something to worry about if Hickman was the Judge but her political cronies would have been able to get off with murder.

How would a drug dealer or criminal attorney possibly blackball Hickman? That makes no sense at all. I would say she just isn't Judge material. On second thought she isn't prosecutor material either. Maybe next election she will be totally unempolyed.

Are there any republicans on the short list? Is Christine Powell the wife of County Administrator Daniel Powell? Just curious.

Look at who is on the nominating commission -- Pete Wimbrow, Jim Antonelli, Paul Abuzade, Bob Marvell, they are all defense attorneys. They don't want a prosecutor like Hickman on there who is going to send their criminal clients to jail. She was the most qualified candidate but the criminal defense attorneys dont want their clients to go to jail. the real question is how these jokers end up on the committee that picks the lawyers. And Laird is already a divorce court judge, how can he not be qualified? Something stinks.

Jim Porter keeps an office in Worcester county. Christine Powell is a Snow Hill public defender. Paula Price moved to Somerset County from Salisbury just to run for judge.

The two people who have practiced law in Somerset County their whole professional careers didn't make the cut. Why? Look who is on the nominating commission. NO one from Somerset County, just Salisbury and Ocean City.

What does practicing in Somerset County have to do with qualifications? I'm sure the three nominees are qualified to be a Judge. The nominating committee interviewed all of the candidates. Maybe they know something about Hickman and Laird that you do not know 7:26. Hickman has a lot of baggage and would always be surrounded by controversy. She is not held in high esteem by her peers.

If you got friends in high places in Somerset, you can pretty much do what you want!Last weeks Somerset Herald reported that a school employee who embezzled funds had their charges dropped by SA office-WHY?Restitution was made but wheres the punishment?

Since Mr. Antonelli was on the nominating committee, maybe that sheds some light on why Hickman did not get forwarded. Didn't I read that Mr. Antonelli negotiated James Henderson's resignation as Warden at the Somerset Co. Detention Center, so that no charges would be filed against him? Therefore, Mr. Antonelli was probably aware of Hickman's involvement in this investigaton from the beginning, acting almost like a defense attorney for Henderson. The investigaton report also revealed that she even set up a meeting with Henderson and the MSP.

To 7:26, have you never heard of an impartial panel. I am sure that the 4 gentlemen on this selection process were appointed so that they would choose the best candidate. It's time for the good ole' boys network in Somerset County to start to become accountable. After all, there will be another election in less than two years. Maybe by then the citizens in this county will be more aware of the workings of the inner circle and break that circle up.

You are exactly correct Blutojthetotmom. The school employee is yet another example of how SA Hickman fails to bring charges when in fact charges should be brought. Other examples are when Hickman failed to bring charges against a corrections officer at the SCDC when he was demanding sexual favors from the inmates in return for cigaretts and money. The most outragous case was that of Warden James L. Henderson's abuse of prisoners and misconduct in office. No charges were ever brought in that case due to her involvement. I'm sure the nominating committee was aware of her actions in that case. Let's not forget her clearing Sheriff Purnell of any wrongdoing 30 minutes after he shot an unarmed man. Obama is right, "we need change".

It appears that the committee left politics out of there decision and nominated the most qualified and capable candidates. Lets hope the Govorner does the same.

More news that Joe is at least 2 days ahead of the Daily Times on. Seems like really old news by the time they print it.
