The Dog & other Animals committee have done a detailed & timely research presenting to the County their suggested new laws for protection of its people & its animals. We should feel proud to know they had such care & concern to give of their free time.
Having attended the Council meeting last Wed. night & reading in the Daily Times the statement from a disgruntaled objector I felt it necessary to get this information out to the people. As the last person appearing before Council stated , " I've been called a lot of things in my life, but never a Natzi!". Well said , I might add.
For ones objecting to authorities saying they can't leave a dog in a vehicle without proper ventalation, please remember the area policeman who left his K-9 companion locked in his air-conditioned car while he went into the police station. Upon returning to his vehicle he found it had STOPPED RUNNING, & HIS DOG DEAD!!!!
Yes, people , things like this can happen & it did. I can't imagine how devastated he must have been.
Our MD Statutes/Law under Transportation-Title 21 Vehicle Law , Rules of the Road, states IT IS AGAINST THE LAW TO LEAVE A DOG WITHOUT PROPER VENTILATION!!! It appears the County Law actually is not needed if our State of MD mandates this. It will be interesting to see how County votes .
For the person at the meeting saying his dog was trained to protect his property, & he was concerned as to the Countys proposed description of "Dangerous Dogs" , & what could happen to his dog because of it, I recommend they go to MD Code, Criminal Law, 10-619 which describes dangerous dogs, which our State of Maryland enforces. This would perhaps help his understanding & also to know when a person is on your property, this is entirely a different story.
I hope this will help clarify questions I see in the GrapeVine of the Daily Times & would suggest you get on your computers & look up our MD State Laws also.
A bunch of NATZI pet owners?-----I don't think so. The Laws of our County have been primitive for way to long. It's time a voice for the animals was heard. I hope our County takes this into consideration when they pass their vote as to what is not stated as Law by the State of MD.

Joe, this is pure crap. We have way to many laws now. We are suppose to be a free country.
I'm tired of the government trying to control every aspect of my existance. The fact is, accidents are going to happen. People are going to get hurt in life. People are going to die, everyday, today just might be our day.
Stop with this outrage. The majority of dogs in our country are treated 100 times better than most in the world.
Instead of criminalizing this behavior, why not take a better approach. Educate dog owners about the proper ways to handle their pets. Then say a good prayer everyday that our canine friend won't be hurt or harm others.
After that, it's just life. We can't legislate morality. We can't prevent all dogs from dieing thru abuse or accidents. We can't stop all the attacks that take place on innocent victims.
What should we do? Put Granny in jail because she didn't leave her windows down far enough before she went to the drug store?
I never want to see a dog neglected. I never want to see someone hurt or killed by a dog. I never want someone to have to live with there mistake about something happening to their "best friend". Let's face facts.
The police officer who left his pooch in the car with the air conditioning on provided plenty of ventilation. An accident happened and it's a sad loss. Stop trying to protect us from sad losses with criminal charges. That is definitely the way the Nazis handled things. They criminalized every aspect of the German existance. Every little detail was watched including the treatment of animals.
I'm tired of BIG BROTHER taking my freedoms away. Don't try to criminalize accidents. If there is abuse, then charge me with a crime. If my dog is not kept in such a resonable way to prevent a aviscious attack, then charge me.
But if an accident happens, then know that I never intended for such a thing to happen. Understand that the price I have to pay for living with my mistake is the harshest punishment I could get.
Just enforce the laws written in the Md. Code.

look at your State Laws as to how
people are restricted, & what they
can do if they , or a loved one is

stricter laws from this County!!
The dog laws were outdated and needed a review, which is what the committee did and suggested changes. It's up to the county to make the changes or not as they see fit. They are not Nazis. As for the dog collars, I agree, the chokers should not be used on a tether. Dogs should not be left in vehicles without ventilation. Some of these are common sense and some of their suggestions came from MD State law. Dogs don't choose their owners and these laws aren't designed to micromanage how you treat your pet, they're regulations on how people in a community deal with pets who are dangerous (or become dangerous), abused, or without supervision from an owner. These laws define the minimum definition of abuse as agreed upon by reasonable people, when a dog should be put down because it is dangerous and caused harm to other pets and humans, and what to do with the stray population. I think this is a responsible way for a growing community to deal with problems that have already been identified, sometimes at the expense of our children and pets. It's unfortunate, but necessary.
You know, I truly believe the
County owes it to the public to
have stricter laws for animal &
personal protection. I think you

Yes, accidents happen to pets. It
is good that this committee has
presented their ideas from this
State & how other States & counties
enforce their laws for protection.
It doesn't matter if the statement
of the majority of animals being
treated good is true or not. This
is not what we are looking at here.
Rather, it is how our County recognizes its responsibility to
its citizens & animals rights for
protection!! So , County Council

right to be protected & hope you
will enforce laws for protection

The approach of teaching people
responsible animal care is to
be commended, however, sir there
are absolutely to many that are
not . For these ,stricter laws
need to be written & enforced in

I was reading the first comment on your site . "People are going to
get hurt", they quote. Yes, people
are . However , if this County provides strict enough laws to protect all concerned we will be a
lot better off then by the old
County primitive Laws. Do you realize when the Sypbert child was
attacked, these dogs had attacked
before. Nothing done!! Then they
attacked an innocent child riding
a bike, who probably would have died had he not had a cell phone to
call for help! The owner of these
dogs finally surrendered them to
be put down. Had he not, by old
current County Law, these dogs would be granted the right to live
on, possibly break loose again &
could kill the next time!!! I actually want my County to protect
me from this & expect them to!!! That is not natzi, nazi , that
is down right crazy thinking!!!!

changing Laws that have been made

I think pet owners should be held responsible for their pets. I've never seen a dog able to open a car door by themselves. People need to be trained on how to treat their pets with love and care. You can't just give it food and water and think that everything will be okay. The reason that some animal protection laws should be in place is to protect the animal. To many pet owners are negligent and/or abusive. No animal deserves to be treated unkindly.
The reason for these laws is some people are just too ignorant to know they should not leave a dog in the car on a blistering hot day or let them run around untethered and unchecked.
Another peeve of mine is people who live out in the country and see that as a free pass to "let the dogs run".I cannot tell you how many times I have almost ende dup in a ditch because some idiots dogs chased my car and I had to swerve to keep from hitting them!The irony is that some of these dogs in my area are already missing a leg where they have been hit before!Dee,dee,dee!!!!!Thats irresponsible and stupid.

I can't believe what was said at
the County meeting. Did that man
really call the Council Nazi & the
committee presenting the suggested
laws to Council a bunch of Nazi
pet owners?? What & where is this
persons thinking? Anytime we can
inact laws for protection, the better off everyone is. I remember
well a lady who told me she was petrified to let her grandchildren
out to play alone in her yard any
more because the people next dr had
gotton 3 pit bulls to protect their
property. Should one of them break
out, & attack one of those children, look at your current
State Laws, as to what rights
she would have . Do you honestly
want a dog who has viciously attacked without provocation to be
able to live on when the attack
is off its owners property. I sure
as heck dont, & I'm an avid animal
lover !!!!
