Why stop at 1958 in your time machine? With this type of hyperbole/non-sense/kooky talk, why don't you head back to Revolutionary times-say, 1778: musket slaughters in schools were much more limited, we were only 100or so years away from making hoof and mouth disease a thing of the past, nobody had any allergic reactions to penicillin-they got smallpox AND THEY LIKED IT!, nuclear reactor cores almost never melted down and for some reason all the cars back then didn't cause as much pollution....and John McCain was only in the 2nd grade...Good times, Good times...

I don't think reese bobby quite understands the joke - these things really do happen in 2008. they really are happening.

I like the john mccain joke tho :)

Reese Bobby understands more than you think....that is why he encourages you to focus on REAL, RELEVANT issues and vote accordingly. Why would you even entertain lofty concerns about race, religion and morality when Salisbury's local officials can't even provide basic sanitation, clean water, functional roads/bridges, productive schools and adequate housing/public safety? You guys need to start working your Maslow's pyramid from the foundation first before you get too fancy with the other stuff.

No it was not better then.

You people are stupid if you can't read between the lines. It has to do with children and how children were disciplined between 1958 ad 2008. It has nothing to do with race, or other things. Kids were better behaved in 58 then 08.

5:32. No...YOU see the bigger picture. Penicillin wasn't even readily available until well after Pearl Harbor; Al Gore wouldn't invent the internet for 30 years or so after 1958 (which has led to all kinds of cyber privacy/crime/mischief issues with teens and children that FDR never imagined, let alone our constitutional framers). That isn't even like comparing apples and oranges-it is like oranges and sweatsocks. It is very easy for kids to be well behaved when they were enclosed in the imaginary "Barbie House" that was Pre-Vietnam America. However, society changes very quickly from time to time-are you going to deal with the cards you have NOW, or lose more of your chips by not accepting certain realities? If you find Grandpa (pick a grandpa, any grandpa) he will also tell you the nickel Hershey Bar story too...the lovely memory will do you absolutely no good (and as you think more while waiting in line it will actually make you angry)as you stand in line to purchase the $2 Snicker bar at the local Quickee Mart.

It's funny how much truth there is to this. Heck, it wasn't this bad 20 years ago.

What really gets my panties in a bunch these days is that if a student is attacked at school by another student (or more than one), that student will also be disciplined, as in detention, suspension, etc., if he/she defends him or herself. Something is really, really wrong with that. I guess the proper thing to do is lie there and get beaten to a pulp---but don't bleed. They'll suspend you for that.

you just showed what i have been telling you.
POLICE STATE.
The end.

Sounds a litle bit like selective fascism to me. There is a point here, to be sure, though not necessarily the one the author was attempting.

There are examples in both time periods of overreaction and excessive force by the state. I take it the author has a fetish for the ones in 1958, but condemns the 2008 big government interference ( as do I).

The Police State was alive and well back then. Its energies were just focused elsewhere. Be assured that wherever else energies were focused back then the state was still causing harm. Its just shifting its focus and even more overgrown, but is has always been well-fed.
