Question of the Day, Fri 10/10

Do you donate blood?

Are you a member of the blood bank? Are your family members? How often do you give blood? What's your blood type? Have you ever had to receive blood?

My mother has a negative type blood. She has been a member of the blood bank for as long as I can remember.

I have recently been diagnosed with lyme disease and babesiosis, a blood disease I got from a tick. I have probably had this a long time and have given blood several times. The blood bank apparently didn't pick this up and has used my blood to spread disease. Don't receive blood unless it is a life or death matter.

I have a negative bloodtype as well, B- to be exact, which happens to be the second rarest blood type out there. I am a member of the Life Savers as well, which means I am called quite frequently to give.

Unfortunately, there have been several times I have had to decline due to being pregnant, recently being ill, or my iron level not being high enough.

Thanks for the reminder, I need to make an appointment to give blood soon.

absolutely. my husband and i are both life savers at the blood bank. He's O-neg and i'm O-pos. the blood bank calls us regularly and we go everytime.

Last time i gave i used the Alyx machine where they actually get twice as much blood in one donation. it took a little longer but its no big deal.

i will continue to give blood as long as i can.

I am also a negative blood type and I have been donating for years. I started donating at my mothers insistence. She donates regularly as well. Also, I donated for myself before a surgery and it made me feel so much better going into it. I ended up needing the blood so it was fantastic that I was able to recycle my own blood.

I am unable to give blood because I lived in Europe in the 80's (not sure why it is an excluding factor, but it is) but my dogs give blood with Eastern Veterinary Blood Bank (www.evbb.com).

The dog blood bank is always critically low. The group comes to Cambridge and Salisbury. A vet (not a tech) takes the blood and once a year they perform tests for things like heartworm. My vet accepts these test results, saving me money.

This is a wonderful volunteer program, eliminating the need for dogs to spend a lifetime in a cage as a "donor" dog.

I have been giving blood for 31 years now. I try to give every 8 to 10 weeks. My grandmother needed blood in the late 80's and I was glad that the blood was available. My mother had surgery and required 3 pints. I will help as long as I am able.

Thanks for the info on the dog blood bank. My dogs will soon be donors.

anon 10:36, living in Europe during the 80's may have exposed you to mad cow disease, thus the exclusion from donating blood. I have been a donor for about 15 years; I have A+ blood and I'm in the Life Savers Program (just got a call this morning to come in next week!)

I am afraid I didn't give a regularly as some of the other folks posting comments. I use to only give when called, but I am no longer able to donate due to the fact that I take a blood thinning medication. I now have to either pay or have someone donate for me.

Congratulations to all of those who help save lives in our community.
