If Only ALL Of Our Younger Americans Were So Smart

"Joe,

I am a regular reader of the blog, sometimes I disagree greatly, most of the time we are coming from the same angle. I am constantly reading about how bad things are and I have to wonder, what if it is not just poor policy that got us into this but poor personal and laziness . I am 25 years old, I own my own home on my income while my fiancé’ finishes up school. I make pretty good money, but am on 100% commission so I have to earn every penny that I make. I love that, I love knowing that if the money isn’t there than it’s my fault and I need to work harder. During the summer my fiancé works full time and I work another part time job to ensure our economic stability. Point being that we enjoy the personal responsibility. I don’t look to anyone else to give me hand outs or “bail me out”. I know that there are a lot of people that are struggling out there that are working very hard and that have circumstances that significantly affect their ability to provide for themselves, but I also feel that there are even more people that can and don’t. Especially people my age to their 40’s. They want to be coddled, and point to everyone else to solve their problems for them instead of sucking it up and doing it themselves. A lot of politicians reinforce this ideal logy by making victims out of everyone. How come no one can say, well Mr. smith maybe you have to get a second job, or do a job that you don’t want to do, or in some cases even move to an area where there are jobs. This idea that life should be easy and everyone should have a job they love making tons of money, live in a beautiful house is ridiculous. Shouldn’t someone say, okay our economy sucks and the only way to fix it is not by taxing production, but increasing production so that more income is generated. Maybe you work 50 hours a week instead of 40, maybe you do whatever, but you are more productive because its needed. Isn’t that real freedom, isn’t there something to take out of having to buckle down and really challenge yourself. Now I am a young guy and could be way off on this, but do know this to be true. Anything that I had to bust my ass to get, anything that required me to work hard for I appreciate more than if it was just given to me through no effort of my own. If the American people do not start providing for themselves, eventually the burden on those that are called on to provide for them will be so great that the incentive for those providers will be lost, and without incentive are economy is nothing.

Mr. Darby i respect your logic. When I was 13 I went to work for my father in his restaurant and have been in the work force ever since. when I didn't like a job I found another. When I didn't like my pay I went back to school of which I did at the age of 31. Now that I am 42 and established I have overcome another obstacle and now i'm raising my 3 children on my own. The opportunity is there if you want it and all you have to do is have the ambition go get it. The American people have become lazy and expect a hand out and it is truly a way for the liberal way to get power and promise rewards to people that didn't earn it. If we aren't careful we will become a socialist society. Nobody said life would be easy but it our responsibility to take care of ourselves and family.

You and I are very much the same! Except I'm female and 32! lol
I started working when I was 14. I've earned everything I have and expect no one to bail me out of anything. Not to mention my job is totally commission based as well!
I'm glad there are more of us cut from the same cloth!
Responsibilty is a bitch, but it is mine and I value it!

How is watching all the work you have had for decades dissappear wanting a hand-out. How is loosing your family business because super stores killed you wanting a hand-out. How is watching your 401 K dissolve wanting a hand-out. How isnot being able to afford health care for your family because of the ridiculous cost wanting a hand-out. How is watching the value of your property plummit and being able to do nothing about it wanting a hand-out. How is most people your age voting in a Liberal nut bag going to help. You dont even have enough miles on your chassy to numb you yet, give it time.

Congratulations! Now go out and learn humility, compassion and social responsibility.

The best of life's lessons is humility. I don't have a problem helping people that are down and are trying to help themselves. It is the people that abuse the system that I have a problem with. We are all responsible for ourselves and children period. You cannot count on handouts for a way of living unless you are incapable of working. It truly is disheartening when I struggle to get by with my 3 kids having to pay for our health care at a health sum of $170 per week when someone that is not willing to work gets a free apartment, food stamps, and free health care. I have to pick and choose what I buy at the store and watch people buying expensive seafood and cashews with their Independence Card. I don't think that is fair when I bust my ass at work to barely get by and a certain part of the populace abuses the system and play video games all day long. The bleeding hearts that do not have a clue is going to be the death of our society. At a minimum if you are getting a handout and are capable of working you should take random drug tests to keep your benefits.

Im still pissed over the farm subsidys Joe posted a while back. Talk about a hand-out.

Anon 9:44 am - the last sentence of your comment says it all. Guarantee that would stop a whole heck of a lot of handouts.

if i have to take a drug test in order to get a job and pay taxes which go twords govt assistance programs. The people benefiting from these programs should be required to take drug tests as well.

Bravo to this post and comments. Americans will work hard, or we will be forced to, to survive.

I'm 40 and am no longer able to work. But I thank the Lord everyday for providing for me and my family. I started working when I was a small boy at family farms, then a paper route. I would cut neighbors lawns and shovel snow. I would do anything to make a buck.

My mom was a single parent trying to raise three boys on a very small nurses salary. I had two pairs of jeans and a few t-shirts most of my childhood. By the time I was 15, I was working in the maintenance department at a nursing home while still going to school. I could repair just about anything. By the time I was 16 I could completelt take apart any part of my car and rebuild it. And by the way, no one gave me anything. I worked and paid for everything I had, plus I helped my family.

By the time I was 18, I had more jobs uner my belt than most 30m year olds. I had contributed more to SS and taxes than people 10 years older than me. I never asked for a handout. I always tried to work hard for everything.

This is something you just don't see in most kids now. They want everything given to them and now. But who's fault is this? The parents of course. We are the ones that feel obligated to give our children everything we didn't, but at the same time, we are taking away any ounce of work ethic and motivation they could have.

Stop coddling our kids. Let them go without. Let them ride their bikes out of eye sight. Let them go days without a television. Give them chores to do everyday. Let them go volunteer at least once a week for those who truly need help. Let them feel what it's like to work hard and get that reward. Let them feel what it's like to help someone else out of the goodness of their heart.

We don't need to be forced into giving to the poor by raising our taxes. Our instict to help those truly in need will shine through on it's own. Instead of giving more to Uncle Sam, give more to your local church. They know how to help the needy.

May God bless all the hard working people of the world. May God bless those who lend a hand to those in need. May god bless our country, our state and our local communities.

My kid sister is like that-at the age of 23 her and her fiance have been in their OWN home for over a year now.She just graduated college last year and they both work full-time.All without help from parents or anyone else.Did I also mention they are raising her fiances 14-yr old brother also?Theres alot of good ones out there like that.
Ted H. I feel your pain! The Government should not be in the business of feeding and housing people-leave that up to private charities like churches.Which is exactly what Libertarian candidate Bob Barr has suggested.

Anthony. You say you could be way off on this, but you are not. You are right on the money about this. You, sir are wise beyond your years. I wish everyone in the country had your attitude and I can gaurantee we would'nt be in the postion we're in. Too many people want something for nothing these days, and I can tell you from experience nothing is free. Somebody's going to have to pay for it. Keep doing what you're doing and be proud that you are a true American.
