"Joe, why no coverage of the new Zoo baby? It is a very important birth, the 47th Titi monkey in the US. That makes two very important births at the Zoo in just a couple months. Sounds like the Zoo has it going on. Check it out at your favorite newspaper, they outscooped you."
First of all, I was not contacted by the Zoo in reference to this mater but it certainly is exciting. There have been other births at the Salisbury Zoo just as exciting over the years.
Sadly, however, most of them didn't survive. Take the Sloths for instance. Many of their babies would fall off their mother and fall to their death onto a concrete floor. I was told by other Zoo Directors in the past that once they learn of such issues, they do everything they can to correct it. There's still a concrete floor at the Salisbury Zoo and one would think after so many deaths that they would relocate the Sloths to another area until the baby is out of such danger.
I'm excited for the Zoo and the new leadership with Joel Hamilton. He's not a passive kind of guy like the last Zoo Director and hopefully things are much better now for these animals.
Now if you think I was out scooped, perhaps you're right. However, the Daily Times has to have something to keep their readers buying their paper because people certainly aren't buying their Stock!
In closing, have you read about all the animal deaths in the past several years at the Salisbury Zoo in the Daily Times? NO! I guess it's only important when an animal is born and not important when they die by the hundreds. Just remember this while you're trying to rag on me, anonymous. My Wife raised, (by hand) most of the animals at the Salisbury Zoo from birth or close to it. Yes, it's always exciting when animals are born and they're a lot of work to keep alive. When you spend so much time caring for them, the pain of losing any one of them is almost as hurtful as losing one of your own children. The Salisbury Zoo needs better caretakers for these animals and under Joel's leadership I'm confident things have gotten much better. However, it was impossible to live with under Jim Rapp's leadership.
