Yesterday afternoon as you may have read here or watched on the local news, the Mayors crime task force met for around 2 hours to discuss ways to begin to bring city crime under control. Jim Ireton at same time was holding another meeting and came out of the box with some great ideas im sure the mayors task force will want to implement. If this task force will actually accomplish anything time will tell. One question alot of people are wondering is why Chief Webster was not on the force yet in the audience and yet Sheriff Lewis who is already stretched super thin took time to be an active part.

you can tell by websters posture, he dosent care, he's not involved, and it's just a political/election game....his arms are spread to ride the wave till the end...its apparent the mare made him attend
Because it's obvious that Chief Webster doesn't know what to do about the crime in his city. So why would they need or want him on the task force?
Why dont you ask the panel if your so concerned.

One of the networks is going to do another "Kojak" series and has asked Chiefy to do a test episode as a Telly Savalas clone since he knows how to wear a $500 suit so well.
Sheriff Lewis probably does have a lot on his plate but what better man to have in that room than him? Maybe Chiefy will watch, take notes and learn. One can only hope.
I would wager a weeks pay that Chiefy does not make the next or any other meeting of the "CT."
I would also wager the "CT" does not last longer than 4 months if that. Add to this segment of wagers the "CT" will make positive recommendations but none will be implemented by SPD.
Lastly if you had a "What the Hell am I doing here meter," and placed the meter on Chief Ed Lashley and Sheriff Lewis the reading would be off the scale.
Most of the gang crime is in the city. Crime is the topic of the committee. What idiot doesn't put the Chief of Police FOR THE CITY WHERE THE CRIME IS on the task force?

Is the Chief Hung over!!! The Chief could care less about the city or his officers. If Chief Dykes was still here he and Sheriff Lewis would not need a Crime Task Force. THEY LIVED IN AND CARED ABOUT THEIR COMMUNITY.
Task Force? Why? Let's get everybody together and have a meeting, so it will look like we are doing something, but in reality, no one gives a shit and really cares about the crime in the City. There are too many meetings with nothing ever done, but provide lip service. And, unless the crime is in the Mayor's backyard or neighborhood nothing will be done. Who on the committee lives on Church Street, Smith Street, Railroad Ave, etc... The City Police Officers are burnt out and quite frankly most stopped caring years ago. Also, the problem with Chief Webster is that he is "working while retired."
This job as Chief of Police is a second career that helps him save a little cash for his golden years. As for the Sheriff and SU Chief, the City's crime problem are not their problem either, because the Sheriff really has no obligation to provide Police services ANYWHERE in the county. The Sheriff's duties by law are to the Courts, serving warrants, court papers, prisoner transports etc...(This is where one could and should argue for a County Police Force). And SU Chief only has to be concerned with crime on campus. Again, it's not the Sheriff's or SU Chief's job to solve the crime in the City, it's the Mayor, Council and a retired Baltimore Detective who is working a second career as Chief of Police. I have an idea! Let's start over with someone who cares for the residents of Salisbury and isn't "retired while working!"
When and where will this group be meeting, times and dates? Regular meetings? Will they always be meeting there at 3rd floor GOB? I'd like to go when I can, thank you.

I second all the comments except why not put Webster on the commitee, answer to that is he has created the problem, so they have to fix it.
Any way of getting this broadcast on PAC14. I would love to see what this group comes up with, COUNTY POLICE RUN BY THE SHERIFF IS THE ANSWER, save lots of money. If oyu create a county "police" you have create a whole new agency, we already have one, by by Chief and Major of Salisbury, buy a few cars with their salary and report to work.
The city will not work with any other agencies to solve issues, their crime is out of control, shut them down, save money and get better service.
If the Sheriff is the highest ranking police authority in his county, then why doesn't his deputies handle accidents? I thought police were trained to handle accidents, especially on County roadways. I guess that's why the Maryland State Police were created and why they are considered Maryland's FINEST! Oh yeah, that's right, Sheriff Lewis was a trooper first, then he became the Sheriff.
First responders are just that, if a deputy or MSP is closer tan a city cruiser, first responders access the accident. If you were in a bad wreck do you really want to wait for proper jurisdiction or do you want whoever can respond as fast as they can? It's called team work.
If a deputy is in the city for a court appearance or any reason it is their duty to address a law breaker, be it running a red light, driving erratically or robbing a college student.
7:53 You are correct, deputies do not handle accidents in Wicomico County. Deputies may do a driver's exchange of information for a minor fender bender, but as far as handling an accident where there is a personal injury it's handled by Maryland State Police in the county and Salisbury City Police in the City. I think deputies handle more criminal complaints then they do trafffic.

They're too busy doing police work.
Accident investigation and reconstruction all comes down to training, troopers have it, deputies don't.

Ok Trooper, you are right you are the finest protection until a real cop arrives. The Sheriff's department handles 2/3 the criminal work in the county so the highly trained accident investigative troopers can fill out the paperwork, while the deputies actually investigate the crimes. Ask any Trooper that has been a cop elsewhere and they will tell you SPD works harder with less, then Sheriff's depatment then MSP. Trooper watch out, Salisbury will go to a traffice barrack soon and you will have your wish of being a highly trained traffic accident handler.
Good thing Ryan Ewalt is there, what would we do without him. Half the other people in the room dont look like they have any business on the "crime task force" either
