The Old Courthouse Needs Some Freshening Up

I recently passed the old Courthouse and noticed the paint on the building was starting to chip away.

You may not think this is important but it's things like this that have caused many of the structures at the Salisbury Zoo to fall apart based on the lack of normal upkeep.

That being said, taxpayers often wonder why Municipalities deny certain donations and while they may be really decent offers, like playgrounds or even a building at a park, that municipality must maintain it down the road and upkeep can become very expensive, if not properly maintained.

Another perfect example and controversial item is the Stand Pipe in Salisbury. There's much talk about that structure and maintaining it or tearing it down. While many cry out to keep this old structure, many also don't recognize that in this economy, it may also not be affordable to do so. One or two people wanting to keep the history going on it isn't a large portion of the taxpayers who will ultimately be responsible for paying to keep it nice.

Anyhow, while the weather is nice, the County should get someone up there to at least put some primer paint on this wood to keep it from rotting.

In places there appears to be so much rotting that the wood needs to be replaced, not painted.

Meanwhile, the County is renovating the road where the County Exec lives - go figure!

I've noticed that since Tilghman became Mayor several years ago the city has suffered deterioration to buildings, the plaza, roads, inner city streets. Whats up with this ?? Doesn't the city know how to properly manage the money? and what the hell is it being spent on??? Salisbury is beginning to look like a shambles!!!

The County (not the City) is responsible for this building -- it's the County Courthouse! If anyone is accountable it's Ricky Pollitt, not Barrie Tilghman.

it is just horrible how our courthouse looks, years ago the county was supposed to fix the old jail on the top floor and use it for office space for the State's Atty Office. Well that did not happen and the whole courthouse is just run down and dirty!

Here's an idea--what about forming a citizen's committee to seek corporate sponsorship for restoration and maintenance of the old standpipe? That way, no more taxpayer's money is spent, a part of history is saved, and Barrie gets more egg on her face? A win/win proposition! Wish I lived close enough to do it.
BTW Joe, just found your blog recently and am impressed. But wow, some of the controversies are unbelievable. Do you make some of this sh-- up?

maybe they can't afford the upgrades due to regulations by the city's historical society

if the county needs legal help i recommend stu leer

That building should be on the historical register, it's a beautiful old building that needs to be preserved.

Rick Pollitt, get your people on the stick and find some grant money or LCB money to fix that building.

there are so many hazards inside the building it might be a lot cheaper to just tear it down

black mold, lead paint, mercury, asbestos and the list goes on

i dont even want to think about the old jail , boy are those some memories i would like to forget.

the old standpipe belongs to the city and the city should take care of it. Why haven't they? Send a crew over there & and at least cut the weeds and pull the ivy roots away from the base.the whole town is going to pot, especially the streets.

I do wonder where the money from taxes go. We are in a very high tax region for the states yet I don't see where it is spent. The streets look like hell. The sidewalks are broken up, the buildings and neighborhoods look like south central. Ben's Red Swings is disgusting, the Zoo is trashy. What gives in Salisbury?

ricky p cannot buy no sherwin williams to paint the eves of the old court house, he has to pay for a new county lawyer and his help, also hire jim the circle talker fineran to mumble at a 40,000 dollar a year pace , and do not forget all the department heads 5,000 dollar lifts he gave them when put in office.
