Guess what's back on the City Agenda again? The Dog Park! They have raised $10,000.00 from the State for an Open Space Grant. One of the representatives there stated that it will help the Poodle Show. OMG, are you one of Jerry's Kids, or what?
No professional Dog Owner or Handler would ever consider bringing one of their Show Dogs all the way down to that Park to piss and crap, believe me! Most of those dogs never touch grass or dirt, that's how picky these people are. So please, before you make a statement like that again, at least find one that people might believe.
Do you also think they would allow their $50,000.00 Show Dogs go into an area with other agressive Dogs and play?
My Wife has been breeding Show Dogs for many years and we're surrounded by a multitude of Show Dog people that would never consider risking our animals to the diseases spread in an environment as proposed. Nor should other Dog Owners!
Now, that being said, who's going to clean and maintain this Dog Park? I'm told tonight that someone stated they're going to hold fundraisers to help maintain and clean it. PLLLLLEASE! Isn't that exactly how the Salisbury Zoo got started?
You Taxpayers in Salisbury will fall for some of the dumbest sh!t I have ever seen. Once they open it, YOU will be taxed to maintain it. The Zoo went from a small gem to a $1,000,000.00 a year tax burden! Now you're going to tack on yet another one, simply because a few geeks dog owners think the majority of people want this. I'll tell you what. Let the Daily Times create a Poll asking how many people truly want a Dog Park and watch what the end result is. This won't be a large Park where you throw Frisbees and so forth. This will more than likely be a small area in which dogs can piss and poop, yet they're calling it a park.
OK, now let's discuss this Idiot of a Mayor who made the statement while she was a Guest Speaker at the Democratic Club a few weeks ago that the River is polluted as bad as it is because of the Dog pee & poop and Pigeon poop. Dee, Dee, Deeee! HELLO Barrie, where will this Dog Park be? RIGHT ON THE RIVER! I know, let's add to your BS excuse of a problem already, right?
This is yet another feel good BS project that will once again screw the taxpayer down the road and until you people stop this crap from happening, we in Delmar will once again visit your FREE Zoo and perhaps take our non Show Dogs to Salisbury for a leak. Oh, don't forget your Daily Times paper to clean up the mess.

Don't people take their dogs to any of the parks to piss & poop anyway? Why does this one have to be labeled a Dog Park? So it gives people cart blanche to let their dog do their business and they don't have to clean it up? They do that anyway...just take a look at my corner yard! Why should my taxes have to pay for it?
I don't have show dogs but I attend a few of them and know many people that own top of the line show dogs. These dogs don't walk on grass, dirt or concrete, it ruins their paws and their coats if they are long coated dogs. Like you also stated they do not allow their dogs to be subjected to the many diseases carried by other dogs. These animals are treated better than people. No one from the Poodle Club or the dogs coming in from all over the country for the Salisbury Kennel Club are going to take their dogs to a dog park. Check out the X pens at the civic center, they have mats under these dogs feet.
This is another warm and fuzzy to detract from the real issues in the city. Barrie can fool some of the people, some of the time BUT, she sure can't fool all of the people all of the time.
You speak of idiots. Who would pay 50,000 for a damn dog? Talk about wasting money. I love my pets but pound hounds are the way to go.
Yikes!
The area where this is proposed (behind the Civic Center, along the river) is about the only significant "open" area of the City Park now that much of the rest has become improved with various facilities (Zoo, Ben's Red Swings, tennis courts, etc. And if the goose doo is polluting the river, imagine what this will too.
It is not an appropriate location for this type of activity, which will generate traffic, noise and probably odor. We need to have a true plan for the City Park, and it is time to limit the new activity that is located there.
Dog Parks are a great idea. Most counties in Florida had them when I live down there. Montgomery County has them as well.
However, the proposed size of the dog is really to small. Last I heard they were proposing only an acre of land. Most Dog Parks in florida were 3-7 acres and with in that was another fenced in area for the smaller breeds.
Believe it not most of these parks take care of them self besides of lawn cutting.. For example in Sarasota County and Montgomery the county provided "poop bags" and you were responsible for the removal. Most patrons were quick to tell somebody that need to pick up after their dog.
Your right Joe, in all the parks I have been to. I have never seen a group of show dogs out there.
Joe:
Good Post. Barrie Tilghman and her clowns on the city council just raised our home taxes by more than 10% and want to waste money on this DOG DOO. Can't wait for the election next year.
The point of dog parks are that they fenced in and the dogs are allowed of leash to run.
The park is enough of a dump anyway without adding a dog (park) dump. What with all the zoo animals dumping and the goose droppings, now they want to add dog poop. I live near the park and people are very ignorant when they walk their dogs - a good majority of them do not pick up after their animals - they let their dogs poop in the park and leave it; poop in people's yards and leave it, and poop on the elks golf course and leave it - real thoughtful owners of these animals I'd say. The park stinks enough as it is - please don't add anymore poop. The park could be a very nice place to visit IF they would relocate the zoo to an area where the animals had enough room to be animals. And peta was over at the circus picketing? Well go to the zoo and take a look.
There's an open field nearer to Beaglin Park Drive that would allow for a nicer dog park out of the flood plain. That is a better site, but the nearby residents (Village at the Park) would probably raise hell about it being used for a dog park or anything else. As I recall they didn't want the Ben's Red Swings there.
Okay Joe, now that you have bloviated on your blog about the dog park, here are the facts of a dog park from both sides of the fence! Frankly, I think that the Poodle show is a poor excuse for the dog park. The dog park will benefit the Poodles to a very small extent. However, I am sure that some of them will use it, because they are here for a week or more. That being said, we have many many apartments and condos in Salisbury now that allow dogs. You would not believe the college students that have dogs and yes, they enjoy them. These students are away from home and their familes. It is a source of comfort and having a good friend to come back to after a day at school. Most have schedules that they can come home in the middle of the day and take them for a walk. They don't all "party all the time". Now they walk them in the park, but this will give them the opportuniaty to let their dogs play freely in this fenced area. Ocean City has 2 parks. One has a fee and you join, but the other one is free. Don't be so critical on this park, and see it from the eyes of someone that loves their dog and its compansionship and does not live on a 100 acre farm. Truth being, a dog SHOULD NOT be allowed to run freely on any farm! JMO. If the city has a different agenda, unfortunately, who knows. I do agree that the space is too small, but apparently is all that is available in the desired area for the park. People DO clean up after their dogs and hopefully will do so in this park area. If that money was available from the state, then why shouldn't the City of Salisbury take advantage of applying for it. I say GO FOR IT. Lighten up Joe on this one.....
Maybe people in your neighborhood clean up after their dogs, but I'm telling you, I live in the park area and a good majority of people DO NOT clean up after their dogs. I have seen more than a couple of people sitting on the grass, cussing because they have to scrape all the poop off the bottom of their sneakers and I'm not talking about goose droppings either. Does a bear s**t in the woods? Well, dogs s**t in the park and in the yards too and their owners DO NOT clean up after them. Put the dog park over in Barrie, Gary's, or Shanie's neighborhood and see if it's a good idea then, state money or not.
I live in a small town house community with a small park for use by residents, a few of whom have dogs. Even though these are neighbors, not unknown to us, many of these people do NOT pick up after their dogs. When once I asked about it, I was told that it would disintegrate when it rained, and it was their park, too. I can't imagine the dog owners in a public park will act that much better.
If you have a problem with people not picking up after their dog, do what I do. I pick up the dog droppings, place them in a small bag. Then I throw it in their car if it is unlocked and I know where they live.Other times, I empty the bag in their mailbox or place it on their doorstep so they get a surprise when leaving the next morning. They get the message rteal quick.
Every park I have been to in larger areas have "poop bag" dispensers. It acts as a reminder hey "pick up your sh_t" I don't see these in the park. I know its not the city's job clean up after peoples dogs but, if the bags are available more people would "think" to clean up after their dogs.

Barry has a nice little dog I'm told and this would be something she can do not only for her dog but for other pet owners also. A lot of people treat their dogs just like a human. I think Barry feels this way.It is also a social time when pet owners can meet and exchange words. It would be nice to meet the Mayor with her dog and other council members in a relaxed environment. There is a lot of tension and ill-feelings within the city and I feel people act differently when animals are around.Let's give the pet park idea a try.
