It seems that the SFD waits until after a tragic fire to finally put some time into fire prevention. Our department received many calls prior to fire prevention week from schools and day care centers in the Salisbury area asking if we would come out to talk about fire prevention, since they were told by the SFD that "they did not have time for that". After having the courtesy to ask the SFD if it was ok with them to come in to their district, we were told to "help ourselves, as they did not have time for that".
A lot of kids in Salisbury only see their Firefighters and paramedics when something bad happens. At one of these events I was told by an 8 year old child that "our fireman never come to see us". These children need to know that they can trust their fireman, and that they are there to help them. Perhaps the SFD needs to take some of the 10+ million that they are spending on a new firehouse that will deliver a slower response time to the city, and hire a PR person to see that these kind of things get done.
In our district, we canvas our area door to door each year offering to check and/or install a free smoke detector, or to change the batteries. We get a lot of appreciation from our community, and a lot of self satisfaction for performing this task each year. We know that by doing this, we are giving our citizens their best chance for a safe escape if fire should strike their home.
Fatal fires will never go away, but it is the duty of all firefighters, wether paid or volunteer, to help prevent these tragedies from occuring.
The SFD does a GREAT job of responding to and mitigating the emergencies that they face each day. The problems ARE NOT with the people that ride the apparatus every day. The problems are at the TOP.

surprising? No. they are a bunch of asses.
when was this. The department designates a crew just to fire prevention week for the schools.
I REMEMBER IN MY YOUTH THERE WAS A BIG DIFFERENCE IN THE OPERATION OF THESE STATIONS. THE MEMBERS WERE COMMUNITY ORIENTATED. ALL OF US LOOKED UP TO THE RANK AND FILE MEMBERS.HOWEVER NOW WITH THE CURRENT LEADERSHIP AT THE TOP THIS HAS GONE TO HELL. THE SAME THING CAN BE SAID FOR THE SALISBURY POLICE DEPT. THE NEXT MAYOR CAN CORRECT THIS.

That is because the mentality of the current administration is focusing on how much they can advance their careers and pay. The volunteers were very community oriented, but the volunteers are ultimately being squeezed out by wannabe chiefs See, Hoppes and Bill Gordy. They have no power what so ever and that has been taken away from them by See, Gordy, and the mayor and her flying monkeys. Say what you want about bill gordy being a volunteer but he was in Delmar and he hated the Salisbury Fire Department. His only motive in coming to Salisbury was to be the paid fire chief and he came very close to that because Barrie wanted him in there. He is the chief of the salisbury fire department and I doubt that the troll D. See will ever wake up and realize that. What is funny about this whole thing is that Gordy uses people until he gets what he wants and then he turns on them. See is so gulible that he is to stupid to realize that.
Hopefully the citizens will wake up and realize one day that they are not getting the bang for the buck they deserve.
Poor old Jimmy Brinson is probably rolling in his grave.
You say your department does a prevention program in your area. How big is your area and how many firefighters do you have? How big is the area the sfd has and how many firefighters do they have. Also draging the whole fire department into the mud is fair to the rank and file firefighters. And most people dont pay attension to anything until it strikes close to home. This is why they hit an area reayy hard after a lost life. And i think 7 years since the last fatality is a good record. Besides just because you do fire prevention dosent mean it will work. I heard several kids say their parents took the batteries out of the detectors because they kept going off for cooking or when they would add logs to the wood stove ect.
Dot,
Sorry, I don't personally buy all you are saying, respectfully.
You're making it sound as if the Fire Department is the reason why there hasn't been such a tragic fire in years. NOT TRUE. Items are safer today than they were years ago.
There were presentations at the library during Fire Prevention Week - at each, a fireman was present in his uniform and proceeded to dress in full rescue gear with breathing aparatus to show the children what a fireman might look like in a rescue situation.
