White Man in Indiana Shot by African Americans Over Confederate Flag on His Car

A white man from Arkansas who was driving through a black neighborhood in South Bend, Indiana was shot by one of a group of black men standing near a quick-mart styled store, police report. The shooting occurred because the white man had a Confederate flag on his vehicle.

A friend of the white man insists that he has never known the victim to be a racist. And the flag has a modern military link to it, not a race-based one.

Facebook: Marine Corps emblem violates community standards

Late Monday, Facebook unpublished the popular pro-military "Locked and Loaded" page, while telling administrators that a picture of the United States Marine Corps emblem with a ribbon marked "In Remembrance" violated their community standards. Jason Light, an administrator from Atlanta, Georgia, told Examiner in an exclusive interview the page was covering the funeral and burial of Marine Lance Corporal Skip Wells, who was killed in Chattanooga.

Administrator Robert Combs also received a three-day ban over the image of the Marine Corps logo. Combs told Examiner all he can do for the next three days is chat, but he intends to replace the page.

"I am just speechless as to how this violates community standards," he said. The screenshot provided by Light did not indicate why the image was yanked, other than Facebook's claim it violated their standards.

Obama: ‘If I ran again, I could win’

President Obama is feeling good about his chances at re-election -- if he could run again.

The president went off-script Tuesday during his address before the African Union, as he talked about the importance of term limits.

After citing the example of the U.S. presidency, he quipped: "I actually think I'm a pretty good president. I believe if I ran again, I could win."

"But I can't," he added.

Obama later said, "I don't understand why people want to stay so long, especially when they've got a lot of money."

Feds Spend $222,172 Studying How Men Look at Women When They Drink

NIH study to limit ‘male-initiated sexual aggression toward female acquaintances’

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is spending over $200,000 to study how men drinking alcohol look at women.

In an effort to limit “male-initiated sexual aggression toward female acquaintances,” researchers at the University of Iowa will analyze the actual eye movements of young men when they are drunk and sober.

“While their eye movements are monitored, participants will view 200 unique scenes that depict a woman who varies along sexual interest, provocativeness-of-dress, and attractiveness dimensions in a background context that varies in sexual relevance,” according to a grant for the project. “Participants will judge the woman’s sexual interest after viewing each scene.”

The project theorizes that men lose their “sensitivity to women’s sexual interest” as they drink. The study also will explore whether males aged 21 to 25 years old have “rape supportive attitudes.”

Cardin, Mikulski, Cummings Announce More Than $815,000 In Federal Funds To Treat Drug Addiction In Maryland

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Barbara A. Mikulski, together withU.S. Representative Elijah E. Cummings (all D-Md.) today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene $815,745 in federal funds per year, for up to three years (depending on the availability of funds).

The grant will support medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for 271 patients with high-risk prescription drug or opioid addiction per year. The treatment will be available in two communities, Baltimore City and Anne Arundel County, which have had especially high rates of opioid-related emergency room visits. Maryland is one of 11 states receiving this federal funding.

“Opioid addiction – including heroin and prescription painkillers – and the deaths resulting from overdoses are devastating families and communities in every corner of Maryland,” said Senator Cardin. “We must use all available tools to help individuals with substance abuse disorders recover and begin to lead healthy, productive lives.”

AFTER 8 YRS., $360 MIL BORDER DRONES FAIL; DHS ASKS CONGRESS FOR ANOTHER $443 MIL

Agency has blown hundreds of millions of dollars on the failed program and wants Congress to keep funding it

Drones used by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to “guard” the U.S. border for nearly a decade are ineffective even though the agency has blown hundreds of millions of dollars on the failed program and wants Congress to keep funding it.

It’s yet another example of what government does best; waste money. In this case the frontline DHS agency—U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP)—that operates the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAC) is actually requesting more money from Congress to keep the futile drone experiment going. Imagine a private business that for years blew huge sums on a failed enterprise asking investors to pour more cash into the same useless project.

That’s pretty much what DHS is doing and the details are offered in an audit published this month by the agency’s inspector general. The Border Patrol has used drones for around eight years, the audit reveals, at a cost of about $360 million. In fiscal year 2013 alone the agency spent $62.5 million to operate the program, or about $12,255 per hour. It gets better. DHS has lied about the cost of operating the drones, the inspector general writes in its report, by drastically downplaying the real figures. The “calculation of $2,468 per flight hour does not include operating costs, such as the costs of pilots, equipment, and overhead,” the report says. “By not including all operating costs, CBP also cannot accurately assess the program’s cost effectiveness or make informed decisions about program expansion.”

The inspector general goes on to blast the agency for its deceiving accounting practices involving drones. “In addition, unless CBP fully discloses all operating costs, Congress and the public are unaware of all the resources committed to the Unmanned Aircraft System program. As a result, CBP has invested significant funds in a program that has not achieved the expected results, and it cannot demonstrate how much the program has improved border security.” It’s a diplomatic way of saying our Homeland Security officials are embroiled in corrupt acts or, at the very least, misuse of public funds.

Baltimore City Health Department Receives Federal Grant To Improve Sex-Ed In Schools

The City Health Department and the U Choose Coalition have been awarded a $8.5 million federal grant to improve sex education in schools.

City health officials say they hope to reduce the teen birth rate in African American and Hispanic girls by 30 percent.

The grant, from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, will be doled out in $1.7 million dollar annual payments over five years.

OBAMA PUSHING FOR ‘LARGEST GUN GRAB IN AMERICAN HISTORY’: NRA

“The implications of this policy are too far reaching to fathom at present."

The Obama administration is pushing to ban Social Security beneficiaries from owning guns if they lack the mental capacity to manage their own disability payments — a move the NRA is calling the “largest gun grab in American history.”

The push is intended to integrate data for the first time from the Social Security Administration into the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), OutdoorHub reported. Beneficiaries who have been declared incompetent to manage pension or disability payments and assigned a fiduciary could then potentially lose their right to bear arms.

The move could affect as many as 4.2 million adults who fall under that category, The Los Angeles Times reported.

ICE arrests 27 convicted criminal aliens in North Texas during 4-day operation

DALLAS — Twenty-seven convicted criminal aliens were arrested in North Texas during a four-day initiative that ended Sunday which was conducted by local officers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO).

This enforcement action, which began July 23, is the latest effort by ICE to prioritize the arrest and removal of convicted criminal aliens. Twenty-six arrests were made in Corsicana; one arrest was made in Dallas.

All 27 individuals arrested have been convicted of crimes in the United States and fall within ICE’s enforcement priorities. Overall, their convictions include: driving while intoxicated, assault with bodily injury on a family member, purchasing/furnishing alcohol to a minor, engaging in organized criminal activity, alien smuggling and theft.

Of the 27 arrested, two fall into ICE’s Priority 1 category, which generally includes national security issues, felony or aggravated felony convictions. Twenty four of those arrested during this operation were Priority 2 arrests, generally including those with three or more misdemeanor convictions (not including traffic convictions), such as sexual abuse or sexual exploitation, burglary, possession or use of a firearm, and possessing illegal drugs.

Maryland to have 'amnesty' for delinquent taxpayers this fall

The state is planning a "tax amnesty" this fall to allow delinquent taxpayers to pay back what they owe with only half the usual interest — and to help the government recover some much-needed revenue.

Those who are behind on their taxes will have a relatively short window — Sept. 1 to Oct. 30 — to apply and be enrolled in the program. It applies to a variety of overdue taxes, including personal and fiduciary income tax, corporate income tax, sales and use tax, employer withholding tax, and admissions and amusement tax.

"It gives an opportunity for people to catch up who weren't aware that they were delinquent until recently," said Dan Thrailkill, manager of the tax department at Baltimore-based accounting firm Ellin and Tucker. "I think you're going to find it in all walks of life. It's going to be business owners, individuals. I think it's going to be people who were unaware they had sales-and-use tax issues."

Comptroller Peter Franchot, who runs the amnesty program, did not support having one this year. He said tax amnesties should be held once every 10 to 12 years; the last one was in 2009.

Two PA Men Arrested for Drug and Weapons Possession

OCEAN CITY, MD – On July 25, 2015, at approximately 6:30 p.m. Ocean City bicycle patrol officers noticed a suspicious vehicle in the area of 14th Street and St. Louis Avenue. As officers approached the vehicle, they clearly observed and smelled marijuana.

Officers ordered the three occupants to exit the vehicle and each were detained without incident. During a search of the vehicle and each suspect, officers located marijuana, a fixed-blade knife, and multiple drug paraphernalia items. Officers also seized nearly $1,000.

Two of the occupants, later identified as Frans Caleb Estima, 21, and Jacob Tyler Sharp, 20, of Blandon PA, were arrested. Estima was charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and obstructing and hindering. Sharp was charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, concealed dangerous weapons and obstructing and hindering. The third occupant was issued a civil citation for possession of marijuana and released.

Estima and Sharp were seen by a Maryland District Court Commissioner. Estima was released on personal recognizance and Sharp was transferred to the Worcester County Jail on $10,000 bond.

LAFAYETTE, La. — For three straight nights, Jonah Slason had gone to sleep with a Bible in his bed.

Ever since a man sitting just rows behind him unleashed a barrage of gunfire on him and others at the Grand 16 Theater, Slason, 25, has found himself riffling through his dark-burgundy Bible late into the night looking for answers.

While he hasn’t found answers for why John Russell Houser opened fire that night — killing two and injuring nine others, ­Slason, a school choir teacher, said he has found love. “I’ve been hearing from everyone I ever knew, even back to high school, reaching out,” he said. “I’ve seen how this whole community has come together and just supported each other.”

A 90-Year Chincoteague Tradition—and a New Legacy

You might remember Misty, but what about Surfer Dude? “Misty was probably the most famous pony of all,” says Chincoteague Island firefighter Denise Bowden of the mare who was immortalized in Marguerite Henry’s 1947 classic children’s novel and 1961 film. “But Surfer Dude comes in a real close second. He was that iconic stallion. He was a handsome thing.”

Surfer Dude became a favorite for visitors to Chincoteague Island during the annual wild pony roundup and swim, which celebrates its 90th anniversary this week. For twenty-three years, Surfer Dude roamed among the beloved wild ponies of Assateague Island off the coast of Virginia and Maryland. Tall and dark, the stallion bore two striking features: his long, blonde mane and mismatched eyes—one brown and one a vibrant blue. Sadly the famous festival will also mark another milestone this year: the passing of Surfer Dude in May. The volunteer firefighters who tend the ponies found his remains on the Southern end of Assateague and believe he died of natural causes—age and a harsh winter can bring even the strongest horses down. In Surfer Dude’s honor, the statue that stands at the entrance to the carnival grounds has been painted to show the stallion’s iconic golden mane and blue eye.

Killer Seagulls Are Terrorizing Animals in the U.K. and Experts Fear a Baby Might Be Next

"To a seagull, what's the difference between a dog and a baby?"

Seaside residents in the U.K. are being warned to keep a keen eye on young children after a spate of seagull attacks have picked off an array of worryingly large animals.

The aggressive birds have been on a killing spree in the scenic Cornwall area, recently pecking a dog and a tortoise to death. Even an aging pensioner was knocked over and left bloodied by a dive-bombing bird, the Telegraph reports.

Experts are now concerned that the problem will only get worse, calling for individuals to not leave their babies unattended as images of small rodents and even other fowl being devoured whole by ravenous gulls spread on social media.

Carl Hancock Kauffmann of Westover, arrested 7-19-15 for driving under the influence of alcohol, driving while impaired by alcohol, driving on a suspended driver’s license, and driving on a revoked driver’s license. Kauffmann was released on signature pending District Court actions. The arrest was the result of a traffic stop conducted by deputies in the area of Crisfield Highway and the Dash Inn Gas Station.

Takiesha Renee Steward of Salisbury, arrested 7-19-15 for driving while under the influence of alcohol, driving while impaired by alcohol, driving on a suspended driver’s license, providing a false name to law enforcement, and driving on a revoked driver’s license. Steward was released on signature pending District Court actions. The arrest was the result of a traffic stop conducted by deputies in the area of Crisfield Highway and Ritzel Rd.

Robin Lynn Cox of Princess Anne, criminal summons served on 7-21-15 for harassment, telephone misuse, and trespassing. Cox was released on signature pending court actions.

Wayne Ottis Hayman Jr. of Salisbury, arrested 7-22-15 for failing to appear in court. Hayman was later released after posting bond.

Seigrid Chantel White of Princess Anne, arrested 7-23-15 for warrants for failing to appear in court. White was later held on bond.  

Dashon Kyree Drummond of Berlin, arrested 7-23-15 on a warrant for violation of probation. Drummond was later held without bond.  

China Losing Control As Stocks Crash

Chinese equities have suffered the sharpest one-day crash in eight years, sending powerful tremors through global commodity markets and smashing currencies across East Asia, Latin America and Africa.

The Shanghai Composite index fell 8.5 percent despite emergency measures to shore up the market, with a roster of the biggest blue-chip companies down by the maximum daily limit of 10 percent. The mood was further soured by news that corporate profits in China are now contracting in absolute terms, falling 0.3 percent over the past year.

The violence of the moves unnerved investors worldwide, stirring fears that the Communist Party may be losing control after stoking a series of epic bubbles in property, corporate investment and equities to keep up the blistering pace of economic growth.

Senator: ‘We Cannot Have a Group Say, If You Don’t Agree with Me, I Will Silence You’

(CNSNews) – “In America we cannot have a group say, if you don’t agree with me, I will silence you and make sure you cannot operate,” Senator James Lankford (R-Okla.) said, in reference to preserving religious liberty for faith-based groups in light of the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize homosexual marriage.

“In a private institution, if you remove tax-exempt status and you remove the opportunity to have student loans and you remove the Pell grants, you’ve shut down that institution and it was a volitional act to say: you disagree with me, I will close you down,” Lankford said.

“That is something we’ve got to be able to guard against, to say, can people have religious belief?” said the senator. “That affects how they hire and what they do.”

“When, this fall, someone walks in and says, we’re a couple, we have been married now as a gay marriage; we want to be in married student housing though your faith says something different; we want to join this university and we want to be in that spot and if you don’t accept us we’re going to try to take away your nonprofit status; we’re going to try to take away Pell grants from you; and we’re going to try to take away student loans from you, so you’d better accept us,” Lankford speculated, adding, “What happens at that moment?”

Snoop Dogg Arrested In Sweden For Drug Suspicion, Takes To Instagram To Shun The Police

After an appearance in Sweden on Saturday night (July 25), Snoop Dogg was arrested by authorities for suspicion of use of narcotics. His vehicle was pulled over, and officers transported him to a police station where he was ordered to take a drug test. While in the back of the cop car, the rapper recorded a video message, which was posted to Instagram on Sunday (July 26).

“[N-word] as got me in the back of police car right now in Sweden, cuz,” Snoop said in the clip. “Pulled a n---- over for nothing, taking us to the station where I gotta pee in a cup for nothing. I ain’t did nothing. All I did was came to the country and did a concert. And now I gotta go to the police station, for nothing.”

Sweden boasts a zero-tolerance policy with regard to the use of drugs. The country criminalized marijuana back in 1988, leading to a lower use of cannabis among students compared to that of other European countries. And while Snoop maintained that he was not involved in any illegal activity, Daniel Nilsson, a spokesperson for the Swedish capital said that he seemed to be under the influence.

Man Shoots At 1-year-old Boy, Is Shot By Man With CCW Permit

A 62-year-old man with a gun in each hand fired at four people – including a 1-year-old boy – before a civilian with a concealed carry permit returned fire and wounded the shooter, cops told FOX19.

Thomas McCary is being held without bond on four counts of felonious assault.

McCary was arguing with a woman around 8 p.m. Sunday night and, when the woman’s brother, Patrick Ewing, approached, McCary pulled out a .38-caliber handgun and fired three shots at him, Cincinnati police said.

Ewing didn’t get hit, but he did get his own gun and returned fire, wounding McCary in the leg. Ewing had a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

Drug Companies Endanger Lives By Delaying Adverse Reports

Drug companies may be endangering the lives of patients by not promptly reporting cases of drug-related illness or death to federal regulators, a new report suggests.

About 10 percent of cases where a drug does serious harm to a person are not reported to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration within the required 15-day period, the new analysis reveals.

Worse, it appears that drug makers are more likely to delay reporting if a patient death is involved, said senior study author Pinar Karaca-Mandic, an associate professor of health policy and management at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health.

"A larger fraction of these serious and unexpected events that involved a patient death were delayed -- about 12 percent of events with patient death, compared to 9 percent of events without patient death," Karaca-Mandic said.

Drug makers delayed filing more than 40,000 reports that involved patient death between 2004 and 2014, researchers found. They also delayed reporting nearly 120,000 events that did not involve a patient death.

The analysis was published online July 27 as a research letter in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine.

"Everyone wants to be sure the drugs we're taking are safe, and it is the FDA's role to make sure the drugs we're taking are safe," said Dr. Rita Redberg, chief editor of the journal and a professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. "If adverse event reports are getting filed late, that means safety warnings are delayed and more people are taking dangerous drugs without knowing it."

Emails Offer New Clues About The Handling Of The April Riots

Newly released emails are offering new clues about the handling of the April riots and the complaints by some top city officials about being left out of the loop.

WBAL-TV 11 News filed a Public Information Request April 29 seeking communications between the mayor, city school officials, police officials and the governor. It's taken nearly three months for our request to be answered and most of what we sought is being denied.

The city cites a variety of reasons, including the claim certain communications are protected by the give and take of the decision-making process.

The new emails do reveal that on April 30, as the city was still dealing with protests, demonstrations, and the aftershock of the riots, it was also dealing with a cyberattack on its website and email security threats.

Pope, Religious Liberty Advocates: Christians Facing Genocide

The growing persecution that Christians are facing around the world has led Pope Francis and other groups to start referring to the problem as a genocide.

Pope Francis said on his recent trip to Latin America that he was discouraged "to see how in the Middle East and elsewhere in the world many of our brothers and sisters are persecuted, tortured and killed for their faith in Jesus," The Guardian reported.

"In this third world war, waged piecemeal, which we are now experiencing, a form of genocide is taking place, and it must end," the Pope said.

Groups that track religious persecution say that the attacks on Christians are largely fueled by Islamic extremism and oppressive governments, and that religious liberty for Christians is deteriorating in the Middle East, sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and Latin America, according to The Guardian.

Activist who burned Confederate flag charged with arson

Patricia Cameron, 32, a member of a group of activists who burned a Confederate flag in Manitou Springs over the 4th of July weekend, has been charged with arson. Video was posted online of the group gathering around a grill inside a pavilion, dousing the flag with lighter fluid and setting it on fire. Manitou Springs Police say Cameron was charged because the flag-burning posed a danger to people in the area and to city property.

Police say they've identified another member of the group, but haven't been able to locate him. A third member of the group remains unidentified.

Illegal Immigrants Outnumber Unemployed Americans

The number of illegal immigrants in the United States totaled 11.3 million in 2014, outnumbering the 9.6 millionAmericans who were unemployed in the same year, according to data from Pew Research Center and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

“An estimated 11.3 million unauthorized immigrants lived in the U.S. in 2014,” says a Pew report. “The new unauthorized immigrant total includes people who cross the border illegally as well as those who arrive with legal visas and remain in the U.S. after their visas expire.”

Of those 11.3 illegal immigrants, 8.1 million are participating in the labor force. “Unauthorized immigrants make up 5.1% of the U.S. labor force,” Pew says. “In the U.S. labor force, there were 8.1 million unauthorized immigrants either working or looking for work in 2012.”

Bollinger: Sheriff's office making progress on drug issues

EASTON — Lt. John Bollinger of the Talbot County Sheriff’s Office spoke during the July 23 meeting of the Talbot County Young Professionals, at Scossa Restaurant and Lounge.

Bollinger said the Talbot County Sheriff’s Office has stabilized since being under the direction of Sheriff Joe Gamble. There is a lower turnover rate among deputies and the office has even grown, he said.

Bollinger said progress is being made in Gamble’s efforts to focus on the drug issues in Talbot County.

He said in 2014, the sheriff’s office made 54 arrests for all controlled substances. In the first six months of this year, Bollinger said the sheriff’s department has made 80 arrests for controlled substances.

Lt. Clay Higgins with the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office in Louisiana has a message for one thief. It’s such a powerful message though that people around the country and the world are joining him in sharing it.

On July 8, Stelly’s Supermarket was burglarized overnight by someone who broke a window with a large rock, kicked in the office’s door and stole hundreds of dollars in cash.

“Watch how he walks with sort of a lanky gait,” Higgins said of the white or light-skinned man, who he described as being about 6-feet tall and wearing a camouflage jacket, in a video that’s now going viral.

Rand Paul defies McConnell to defund Planned Parenthood

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., announced late Friday that he will "use every Senate rule" to force his Senate colleagues on the record after fellow Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., blocked his amendment to defund Planned Parenthood.

If Paul gets enough senators to sign his petition, he can go around McConnell and force a vote.

"I'm prepared to use every Senate rule at my disposal to force my colleagues on record whether they like it or not," Paul wrote Friday night. "Under Senate rules, if enough Senators are willing to stand with me and sign a petition demanding a vote, there will be no stopping you and me."
