Tossin Bison Chips

One of the special events held at the 4th of July Party in Willards was a Bison Chip Tossing Contest. The gentleman in the top photo, (in black) threw his sh!t more than 100 feet, blowing away the competition.

Could you just imagine if JR was there, he would have hit the Moon! This was a pretty cool/fun event as many of us put up our $2.00 to throw 3 year old Bison poop. Bob Harris was the biggest contributor, adding more and more money to try to catch up with the winning throw until he simply ran out of dollar bills.

We Served Hundreds Of Hot Dogs!

Bruce Hunter and I served literally hundreds of Hot Dogs for FREE at the 4th of July event in Willards. Boy, once they made the announcement that we were giving away FREE Hot Dogs, a FREE Soft Drink and a FREE bag of Chips, the line was absolutely CRAZY!

For those very special people like Firefighters and Police Officers, well, they got the special Nathan's Hot Dogs. Sam's Club was kind enough to sell me a case of the Hot Dogs they prepare in their food court, (you can't buy them in the store).

So a special thanks goes out to Bruce Hunter from Bruce's Billiards for providing the Hot Dog Cart and supplies for this 4th of July event.

OK Magazine At WalMart

Dear Joe,

Just wanted to share this with you with regard to OK magazine and Walmart. My fiancee and I were on our way to check out and there was that stupid OK magazine with Michael Jackson's dead body on the front. It wasn't at adult level. It was actually on the lower shelves at eye level for small children to see. I immediately grabbed the first magazine and flipped it face over. While I don't believe that we should shield our children from death, it should be at the discretion of the family to make that choice. For Walmart to make such a poor choice was in bad taste. Once we checked out, my fiancee headed over to the front end manager. She was unable to do anything about it. The store manager came over and he expressed his concern to her. She agreed and immediately began removing the magazines from the shelves. I'm hoping that she didn't just remove the magazines to pacify us until we left the store. Hopefully they have been removed and thrown in the dumpster where they belong.

The Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office Is Looking For Aggressive Drivers

The Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office is joining forces with more than 90 law enforcement agencies to coordinate efforts to target aggressive drivers by participating in the Smooth Operator Program. They will be conducting “waves” of enforcement throughout the summer, the next wave being July 5 through 11.

Avoid being an Aggressive Driver.

Allow more time to get to your destination. It reduces stress automatically
Come to a full stop at red lights and stop signs. Never run yellow lights.
Let other drivers merge with you
Obey posted speed limits.
Don’t ever follow other drivers too closely.

Women’s Softball Season Heads Down Homestretch with Division Up for Grabs

(Salisbury, MD) On Thursday, July 2, an amazing women's softball season became even more compelling with a dramatic walk-off homerun, two upsets, and first place changing hands yet once again. In the game of the year, Picture Perfect's Kristen Senkbeil hit a clutch 3 run homerun with two outs in the bottom of the 7th to defeat Designer's Edge 11-10. Picture Perfect led 8-7 heading into the 7th but Designer's pushed across three runs to take a 10-8 lead. With two outs in the bottom of the 7th and first place on the line, an easy pop up that would have ended the game fell in between Edge fielders, giving Picture Perfect new life...and that's when Senkbeil stepped to the plate. She crushed a pitch over the right fielder's reach and legged out a homerun in an amazing finish at Harmon field.

The win puts Picture Perfect all alone in a wild divisional race that changed hands twice during the night. Peninsula Printing headed into the night all alone in first but lost two games; the first to Bank of Delmarva, 8-6, and the second to Sharptwon, 8-2. Sharptown is not only playing the role of division spoiler, but the team is getting hot at the right time with 4 straight wins and could be the team that nobody wants to play come playoff time. Monday (July 6) is the final regular season game and will determine final seedings for the league playoffs, which begin Wednesday, July 8. If Thursday was any indication, the playoffs ought to be an exciting time with any team able to emerge as the 2009 champions.

The Salisbury Tea Party

Considering it was the 4th of July, I was amazed at the volume of people that turned out for this event. Hundreds of people came to the GOB sick and tired of where our Government is driving us.

The very peaceful gathering went on for hours while many got to speak their minds and we didn't see a single Goon from the SPD. Mind you, they may have been watching from a window above somewhere but all in all it was a nice gathering of people.

Were you there. Did you want to be there but were out of Town for the Holiday weekend?

Cambridge Tea Party

Cambridge Tea Party had over 100 people show up which was at least 3 times as many from the 1st Tea Party. At the end we threw in tethered tea boxes into the Choptank for symbolism that we've had enough.

A Catholic priest, an Indian doctor, a rich Chinese businessman and an Italian from New Jersey were waiting one morning for a particularly slow group of golfers in front of them.

The Italian from Brooklyn fumed, what's with those jerks? We're waiting fifteen minutes between shots!'

The Indian doctor chimed in, 'I don't know, but I've never seen such poor golf!'

The Chinese businessman called out, 'Move it, time is money!'

The Catholic priest said, 'Here comes the greens keeper. Let's have a word with him.

Excuse me, sir!' said the priest, 'What's wrong with that group ahead of us? They're rather slow, aren't they?'

The greens keeper replied, 'Oh, yes. That's a group of blind fire fighters. They lost their sight saving our clubhouse from a fire last year, so we always let them play for free anytime.'

After wasting my time on the phone with the DT telling them to stop littering my yard/ neighborhood with their Tuesday Trash, even gathering up mine and the neighbors’ and dumping them in the DT’s driveway on my way to work, I finally came up with the solution. If the DT has blue boxes for their subscribers’ papers, I’ll provide the proper plastic container for the Tuesday Trash littering spree.

I watch in awe as the litterbug comes down the street flailing the trash out of both sides of the vehicle, then slow to a stop, toss one in my container, then proceed down the street littering away! Then the neighbors use it when they come out to get their mail and the rest of the area is cleaned up!

It’s a real knee- slapper to watch! Spread the word!

More than 2,000 tax, Big Government protests in all 50 states

WASHINGTON – More than 2,000 tea parties from coast to coast attracted hundreds of thousands tax and Big Government protesters on Independence Day – perhaps the biggest July 4 political event in America since the proclamation of the Declaration of Independence.

Rick Perry, who became the first elected official to sign the "Contract with the Constitution," a document that espouses 10 principles including limiting the role of the federal government, protecting the right to bear arms and amending the Constitution to define marriage as a union between one man and one woman.

Plastic Bag Ban In Outter Banks

Details about ban on plastic bags on Outer Banks

State Sen. Marc Basnight’s office has released details on Senate Bill 1018, which would ban plastic bags at certain retail stores on the Outer Banks.

The bill has been sent to Gov. Beverly Perdue, who has said through a spokesperson that she will sign it.

Basnight is a Manteo Democrat and president pro-tempore of the North Carolina State Senate. The bill has been his project.

The legislation bans large retailers from providing single-use plastic bags on the Outer Banks. It is an effort to rid North Carolina’s most environmentally-sensitive area of litter that is harmful to marine life, unsightly to the millions who visit this area for its natural beauty, and to promote the use of reusable and renewable resources.

The ban becomes effective on Sept. 1.

Here are details that are of interest to Outer Banks businesses, as well as islanders and visitors.

The legislation:


• Applies only to retailers in the Outer Banks portions of Dare, Currituck, and Hyde Counties

• Applies only to retailers with a 5,000 square foot space or larger

• Applies only to retailers that have five or more stores in the state

• Would not apply for distribution of prepared foods

• Retailers may use boxes from their inventory to distribute goods.

• Would not apply to plastic bags for meat and produce

• Stores will offer one of the following incentives to customers who bring in their won reusable bags:

o a cash refund or
o a store coupon or credit for general store use or
o a value or reward under the retailer's customer loyalty or rewards program for general store use.
o The amount of the incentive shall be equal to or greater than the cost to the retailer of providing a recycled paper bag, multiplied by the number of reusable bags filled with the goods purchased by the customer

The retailers affected will post this sign:

"[county name] County discourages the use of single-use plastic and paper bags to protect our environment from excess litter and greenhouse gases. We would appreciate our customers using reusable bags, but if you are not able to, a 100% recycled paper bag will be furnished for your use."

It sure looks that way. And if it happens, you can mark it down: The economy will slow to a crawl and may even relapse into a deep recession. This is a complete reversal of what was promised by this Administration.

"In an economy like this," President Obama said at last summer's Democratic National Convention, "the last thing we should do is raise taxes on the middle class." That, he said, included 95% of all families. He promised flat out that he wouldn't raise taxes on families with income of less than $250,000.

Stand by for an Obama "Flip Flop". How times have changed. On Monday, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs, was asked point-blank several times if the president's "no tax" vow was still good, his answer "we are going to let the process work its way through."

"Process"? Middle class, watch out.

Actually, the last thing we should do is raise taxes on any class — lower, middle or upper. Tax hikes in a recession are plain crazy. They will inevitably crimp economic activity, slow retail sales, kill jobs and leave the government starved of revenues.

A major study in 2007 looking at recent U.S. economic history found that when the government raises taxes by 1%, U.S. GDP falls by roughly 2% to 3%. As we've noted before, the only surprising thing about this study is its author: Christina Romer, President Obama's top economic adviser. Is he still listening to her? I doubt it.

The sweeping ambition of this White House is to continue to expand government. This policy will require massive tax hikes to pay for it. If it ever was, this is no longer in doubt. The shame of it is that many Americans are still desperately holding on to a "Wait and see" attitude". Stand by for a flash folks, it will not happen. Be advised, the "Slick talking Snake Oil salesman in the White house can not, I repeat, can not talk us out of this depression. In spite of skillful rhetoric, more and more Americans are becoming unemployed. Currently, unemployment is eating us up at 10%+. Not long ago the President "prophesied that un-employment would not go above 8%. Unfortunately, the "Wait and see" crowd is hoping against hope that the President can pull it off. They refuse to see the noses in front of their faces. These are the same self deluded folks that fail to see the danger of the President instituting a hegemony over the country by appointing Czars. Many Americans refuse to see the danger of using Czars to circumvent Congress. The President has inadvertently ushered in a period of "Gangster Government". One in which political cronies get preferential treatment over those from the opposing party.

Just look at the tab run up so far — and some of the costs that we might soon have to pay. All told, we'll spend $13 trillion more than we'll take in through 2019. How will we pay for it all?

The Congressional Budget Office recently estimated that U.S. taxes as a share of GDP would have to rise 49% by 2035 to pay for just the spending already budgeted. And these taxes will hit all Americans, not just the "rich." This is a recipe for an economic disaster in America.

"We'll have to raise taxes soon," recently wrote President Clinton's former deputy Treasury secretary, Roger Altman, in a Wall Street Journal opinion piece this week that sounded suspiciously like a trial balloon for Democrats in Congress and the White House.

There's a far better answer to our economic ills.

At the same time the U.S. is pondering economic suicide through massive tax hikes, other countries are learning not from Obamanomics but from Reaganomics: They're pondering tax cuts.

Germany's Angela Merkel wants to cut taxes, despite her country's big deficit. "How can we ensure Germany emerges stronger once the crisis is over and the cards have been reshuffled in the world? The answer is we need growth," she said this week.

Even Hungary's socialist government says the same thing. It's pushing supply-side tax cuts in 2010 to stimulate its economy.

Our guess is Germany and Hungary will show more life in the next year than the U.S., unless the U.S. wakes up.

Usually at this point in the business cycle, the U.S. is the locomotive that pulls the rest of the world out of its slump. This time, the world is looking to China to get the job done. In the U.S., the rest of the world sees only a growth-killing mix of higher taxes, soaring spending, surging debt, rising inflation and growing regulation.

We could reverse this. Instead of tax hikes, we need broad-based tax cuts for families and business. But we must act right away. After all, why let this crisis go to waste?

Two Old Friends

Bill and George, two elderly friends, met in the park every day to
feed the pigeons, watch the squirrels and discuss world problems.

One day George didn't show up. Bill didn't think much about it and figured
maybe he had a cold or something. But after George hadn't shown up
for a month or so, Bill really got worried.
Bill approached the park and -- lo and behold! --there sat
George! Bill was very excited and happy to see him and told him so. Then
he said, 'For crying out loud George, what in the world happened to you?'

George replied, 'I have been in jail.'

'Jail?' cried Bill. 'What in the world for?'

'Well,' George said, 'you know Mary, that cute little blonde
waitress at the coffee shop where I sometimes go?'

'Yeah,' said Bill, 'I remember her. What about her?'

'Well, one day she filed rape charges against me; and, at 89
years old, I was so proud that when I got into court, I pled 'guilty'

'The damn judge gave me 30 days for perjury.'

Wireless Issues

I hope everyone enjoyed a nice 4th of July weekend. We had an unbelievable time in Willards. We arrived at 11:15 AM after spending time at the Tea Party and I have to tell you, it was so nice to totally get away from the Blog for an entire day.

We got home around 11:30 PM and I didn't even go to the computer. When I got up Sunday morning to check things out, my Wireless Card was fried. I called Verizon and they told me they had a new update and all I had to do was log in to Verizon and update the program and I'd be all set. However, these Idiots forgot that you have to have an active Wireless Card, (for the most part) to get on line.

Some people at Verizon say you have to have access and others say you can do so without it being active, go figure. Nevertheless, I went into the Verizon Store yesterday for them to get me up to speed and when I left they had me feeling confident everything was going to be just fine.

Upon arriving back home I eagerly plugged it in and wouldn't you know it, I had one bar and it keeps kicking off line every 5 minutes or so. Needless to say, I wasn't happy. I called Technical Support again and walked through all sorts of tests only to be told I needed an update card, my antenna is supposedly fried.

So things might be a little slow until I get my new card on Tuesday but I'm sure we'll get by. Downloading pictures is a major bummer because they take forever, (feels like being back on dial up) and sometimes they load, sometimes they don't. So we'll see what happens and I'll do my best to keep Posts rolling.

Radioactive Chinese Drywall Is Stinking Up U.S. Homes

The government thinks radioactive industrial waste from China is responsible for a recent sulfur stench that has plagued hundreds of Florida homes. Demand for Chinese drywall spiked during the housing boom, but federal regulators believe the drywall contained phosphogypsum, a banned waste byproduct that features prominently in Chinese construction. When used in drywall, the probable carcinogen can corrode "air conditioners, mirrors, electrical outlets and even jewelry."

Need An Ambulance? If You're Overweight, It's Going To Cost An Extra $543

An ambulance ride with American Medical Response in Topeka, Kansas will soon cost an extra $543 for folks weighing 350 pounds or more. Though AMR already owns cots that can support up to 500 pounds, they claim that because of rising demand from so-called "bariatric patients," they now need to buy winches and "extra large and reinforced cots."

Fatal Crash Kills Two 17 Year-Olds

Location of Incident: Thompsonville Road and Jenkins Pond Road north of Milford, Kent County, DE

Date and Time of Occurrence: Sunday July 5, 2009 at 1600 hours

Victims:
Brittany Bradley, 17, Milford, DE
Anthony Burton, 17, Milford, DE

Delaware State Police are investigating a crash that killed two 17 year-olds from Milford.

The crash happened today at 4 o’clock in the afternoon when Matthew Fluman, 20, of Harrington, was driving a 2000 Jeep Cherokee north on Jenkins Pond Road. Fluman failed to yield the right of way at a stop sign and was struck on the passenger side by a 2006 Ford F250 pickup truck driven by Charles Walls, 66, of Milford. The pickup truck was traveling westbound on Thompsonville Road prior to the crash.

As a result of the crash two passengers were kill who were riding in the Jeep Cherokee operated by Fluman. Bradley was seated in the front passenger seat and Burton was seated in the rear passenger side of the Jeep. Both were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. It is unknown if the two passengers were wearing seatbelts. Both operators were wearing their seatbelts and alcohol is not suspected in the crash.

The crash is still under investigation and troopers are asking anyone who may have witnesses the crash is asked to call the state police at 302-697-4491 ext 215.

Burglary Suspect Arrested After Pursuit

State Police arrest burglary suspect after he lead them on a chase

On Saturday July 4th just after 7 pm a trooper was in the area of U S 113 near Bowers Beach Road when he had the opportunity to clock a Pontiac Gram Am traveling 85 MPH in a 55 MPH zone. The trooper stopped the car and made contact with Guinn who was operating the vehicle. Guinn gave the trooper a false name and drove off while the trooper was walking back to his car to check Guinn’s information. The trooper began to follow Guinn.

Guinn fled south on Bay Road and continued on to Barretts Chapel Road where Guinn lost control and struck a curb. Giunn continued to drive through yards where he struck a brick retaining wall. Guinn continued to drive through several yards before driving back on Barretts Chapel Road. He was finally stopped on Barretts Chapel Road and was taken into custody.

Guinn was wanted for a domestic burglary which occurred back on June 5th of this year.

Guinn was charged with the following offenses as a result of the pursuit:

Disregarding a Police Officer Signal to stop
Criminal Impersonation
Resisting Arrest
Leaving the Scene of Property Damage Collision
Driving While Suspended
Reckless Driving
Malicious Mischief by a Motor Vehicle
And numerous other traffic offenses

He was arraigned and committed to the Department of Correction in default of $9,514.00 bail

Gay Loggers Reach Goal, To Protest As Planned

The Green Coalition of Gay Loggers for Jesus will march on Main Street as planned July Fourth, the organizer of the group said Thursday evening.

Organizer Brian Leland had set a 5 p.m. deadline Thursday to reach his fundraising goal of $1,100, the amount of money the city of Bozeman estimates it will cost it to shut down the downtown thoroughfare for the morning protest.

Leland said Thursday evening that he had raised about $1,500. The $400 difference will be given to the local food bank, he said.

The Green Coalition of Gay Loggers for Jesus was formed to protest how the city went about granting the Bozeman Tea Party’s request for a permit march down Main Street on July Fourth.

City staff initially denied the Bozeman Tea Party’s request to cordon off the street for two hours while they protested government spending, the growing national debt and taxes. But following pleas from members of the Tea Party, the Bozeman City Commission recommended 4-1 that staffers reverse their decision, which they did.

Leland said the city violated open meeting laws since the discussion was not publicly noticed. Also, he said it is hypocritical for a group to protest government spending while forcing the government to incur costs n thus his emphasis on raising the $1,100 before marching.

Delaware State Police Conduct Sobriety Checkpoint

Location of Incident: Walnut Shade Road at Poly Tech High School, Woodside, Kent County, DE

Date and Time of Occurrence: Friday , July 3rd, 2009 from 2200 hours to 0200 hours

State Police continue Holiday enforcement for a safe Fourth of July Weekend. Troopers conducted a sobriety checkpoint on Friday evening on Walnut Shade Road near Woodside.

Troopers stopped 194 vehicles and detained 3 drivers for further investigation of driving under the influence. One motorist was charged with driving under the influence and a second motorist was charged with underage drinking.

State Police will continue to work with local law enforcement agencies and the Office of Highway Safety to reduce the number if alcohol related fatalities.

Accidental Death Investigation

Location of Incident: 18000 block White Oak Drive, Tall Pines MHP, Lewes, Sussex County, DE

Date and Time of Occurrence: Thursday, July 5, 2009 2110 hours

State police are investigating the accidental death of a 3 year-old girl which occurred on Thursday evening.

State police were called to the Tall Pines MHP west of Lewes after 9 in the evening. A three year-old girl was eating grapes with other family members when one became lodged in her throat. The little girl lost consciousness and family members called “911.”

Sussex County paramedics arrived on the scene along with a state trooper and began providing first aid. While the girl was transported to Beebe Medical Center, medics were able to dislodge the grape, however, upon arrival at the medical facility the child died.

The Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting a follow-up investigation.

Crash Involving Fire Truck

Location of Incident: Old Orchard Road and Savannah Road , Lewes , Sussex County , DE

Date and Time of Occurrence: Saturday July 4, 2009 at 0853 hours

Delaware State Police are investigating a crash involving a Lewes fire truck.

The crash occurred just before 9 o’clock this morning when a Lewes fire truck was responding to a morning crash on SR 1.

The crash occurred when the fire truck was traveling west on Savannah Road. The truck was responding to a crash with its emergency equipment on as it approached Old Orchard Road. Jane Hicks, 72, Lewes, was driving a 2007 Lincoln Town car on Old Orchard and had come to a stop. Hicks was attempting to turn left on to Savannah Road when she pulled in front of the fire truck. The fire truck broadsided her vehicle resulting in the crash.

Some debris from the crash damaged a car that was waiting to turn onto Old Orchard Road from Savannah Road.

Hicks was taken to BeeBe Hospital in Lewes where she was treated for minor injuries. Hicks was charged with Failing to Yield the Right of Way.

The driver of the fire truck was identified as Troy Virden, 35, of Lewes.

Marion Barry Arrested By Park Police; Charged With Stalking

Ward 8 Councilmember and former mayor Marion Barry was arrested Saturday night by a U.S. Park Police officer and charged with misdemeanor stalking.

According to Park Police spokesperson Sgt. David Schlosser, the incident leading to the arrest took place at around 8:45 p.m. An officer on patrol in Anacostia Park noticed a pair of cars in close proximity; the driver of one of the cars attempted to get the officer’s attention, and the officer subsequently pulled both cars over near the intersection of Anacostia Drive and Good Hope Road SE. The officer spoke first to the driver who had made the summons, an unidentified woman, and “she indicated there was some sort of discussion, dispute, angst,” Schlosser says.

The officer then spoke to the driver of the second car, Barry. “Apparently,” Schlosser says, “because of that conversation, [the officer] found sufficient cause [for Barry] to be placed under arrest.” Schlosser did not know if any other persons were in the vehicles, but said that Barry was the sole person charged in connection with the incident.

The officer, Schlosser says, is a New York native and had no idea who Barry was prior to making the arrest.

Park Police detectives consulted with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and a misdemeanor charge of stalking has been entered against Barry, who was given “citation release” on his personal recognizance. When LL left Park Police headquarters at about 3:30 a.m., Barry was on his way to D.C. central lockup to be processed for release. His case will be adjudicated in D.C. Superior Court.

Stalking, in the D.C. criminal code, is defined as when a person “on more than one occasion engages in conduct with the intent to cause emotional distress to another person or places another person in reasonable fear of death or bodily injury by willfully, maliciously, and repeatedly following or harassing that person, or who, without a legal purpose, willfully, maliciously, and repeatedly follows or harasses another person.”

Schlosser says Barry was “very cooperative” during his booking.

Civil War Store Card Script



During the Civil War, hard currency was hard to come by. The United States had tried to overcome this by issuing what is known as “fractional currency”. This was paper money issued in denominations of 5, 10, 25 and 50 cents. While this is uncommon, it is available in various prices depending on the condition. This was unhandy to use owing to its small size. It was around 3 ½ by 2 inches and had different sizes depending on the issue and denomination. The United States also issued their first paper money in 1862 in the regular denominations of One Dollar, etc.

Also during the War years, local merchants issued their own paper money. This is known as Civil War Script. The one pictured here was issued on Nov. 17, 1862, by the merchants Alexander Toadvine and Thomas Vincent. Alexander “A.G.” Toadvine became the first mayor of Salisbury in 1888. This particular note is listed in the reference volume “Money and Banking in Maryland”. published by the Maryland Historical Society in 1996. It is listed as Rarity-7, which designates that there are only 1-5 examples known to exist.

The script was used to give change to a customer due to the shortage of hard currency. It was redeemable at the place of issue, although there may have been agreements by which local merchants would accept other local script in trade. It was not money and could not be spent as such at any location outside the local area.

The only merchants in Salisbury that issued such script were J. E. Parsons, who owned a general store, Joseph Hopkins Tarr, a lawyer who was instrumental in the forming of Wicomico County, and the partners of Toadvine and Vincent, who owned a general store. All examples of notes from Salisbury are Rarity-7.

Any Civil War script is quite rare today and commands high prices if it ever comes on the market.

North Korea Fires 7 Missiles

SEOUL, South Korea (July 4) - North Korea fired two missiles off it eastern coast Saturday, a South Korean official said.

The missiles were fired at about 8 a.m. and the Defense Ministry was trying to confirm whether they were short or mid-range missiles. The ministry official did not give any further details and spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to media.

A Yonhap news agency report said North Korea fired two short-range missiles that appeared to be Scud missiles. The agency quoted a South Korean government official it did not identify. Yonhap originally reported the missiles were mid-range.

North Korea fired four short-range missiles off the east coast on Thursday.

Speculation had been high that the communist country might launch more missiles in coming days. North Korea had warned shipping to stay away from its east coast effective through July 10.

South Korea's military said Friday it was closely monitoring North Korean military sites, believing that more missile launches were likely to be launched.

Saturday's reported launches came on July 4, or U.S. Independence Day. The North has a record of timing missile launches for the U.S. national day.

UPDATE: SEOUL, South Korea (July 4) - North Korea fired seven ballistic missiles off its eastern coast Saturday, South Korea said, a violation of U.N. resolutions and an apparent message of defiance to the United States on its Independence Day.

The launches, which came two days after North Korea fired four short-range cruise missiles, will likely further escalate tensions in the region as the U.S. tries to muster support for tough enforcement of the latest U.N. Sarah Palin To Resign As Alaska Governor

WASILLA, Alaska Alaska Governor Sarah Palin said Friday she is resigning from office at the end of the month, raising speculation that she would focus on a run for the White House in the 2012 race.

The former Republican Vice Presidential Candidate made the surprise announcement from her home in suburban Wasilla on Friday morning. She said she would step down July 26 but didn't announce her plans.

Search Warrant Yields Drug Arrests

Location of Incident: 28565 Blueberry Lane, Frankford, Sussex, Delaware

Date and Time of Occurrence: Thursday July 2, 2009

Defendants:

Dianne Cottingham, 41, Frankford, was charged with Possession with the Intent to deliver cocaine, maintaining a dwelling, criminal nuisance, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Janice Clark, 38, of Salisbury Maryland was charged with possession of schedule IV prescription pill.

Branden Cottingham, 26, Frankford was arrested for Possession with the Intent to Deliver Cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Bertha Taylor, 51, of Blueberry Lane, Frankford, was arrested for possession of crack cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

On Thursday July 2, 2009 the state police along with the Milford Police Department executed a search warrant at the residence of Dianne Cottingham at 28565 Blueberry Lane, Frankford, Delaware in connection with a drug investigation. During the search of the residence police recovered 8.9 grams of powder cocaine and1.8 grams of crack cocaine, drug paraphernalia, and $3147.00 in United States currency was seized.

Three other people were in the residence at the time of the search. See above for defendant information and charges.

Burglar Thwarted By 72-Year-Old Former Boxer

In a lopsided fight that even Don King would have had trouble promoting, a burglar in Oxford, England, got more than he bargained for when he broke into the home of Frank Corti, a 72-year-old former junior boxing champion.

Upon spotting the intruder, Gregory McCalium, in his hallway, Corti dodged a knife attack and delivered two mean right hooks that left McCalium battered and down for the count. Police arrived to find Corti subduing McCalium, who looked like he had been in "a car accident," according to one lawyer.

"I was scared when he first drew the knife but most people would have acted in the same way," Corti said. "If needed to, I would do it again."

McCalium was found guilty of aggravated burglary, but he's apparently already planning his next robbery: the home of a Russian man named Drago.

Sanford's Wife May Forgive Him

COLUMBIA, S.C. (July 2) - South Carolina first lady Jenny Sanford says her husband's affair with an Argentine woman broke a trust that he must earn back — first from his family, then his constituents.

She says she is willing to forgive his "inexcusable" behavior and give him another chance, but that reconciliation takes time and it won't be easy. Her statement Thursday was the first since Gov. Mark Sanford told The Associated Press earlier in the week that his mistress, Maria Belen Chapur, is his soul mate but he is trying to fall back in love with his wife of 20 years.
