Duquesne University professor on paid leave after repeatedly using 'N-word' during online class: reports

A professor at a Pennsylvania university has been placed on paid leave after a video shared on social media showed him using the “N-word” repeatedly during an online class.

Duquesne University confirmed that education professor Gary Shank was no longer teaching, pending an investigation. Another faculty member will take over the educational psychology course,WTAE reported Friday.

According to audio from the Friday class posted to Twitter, Shank – who is White – tells students he is giving them “permission” to use the racial slur because they are using it in a “pedagogical sense.”

What’s the one word about race that we’re not allowed to use?” he poses to the class. “I’ll give you a hint. It starts with ‘N.’”

After he is met with silence from stunned students, Shank says he is only using the word to “demonstrate a point,” before using the slur and then describing some of its common, derogatory uses from “when I was a young man.”

“Could we do that now, guys?” he asks.

“No,” a few students can be heard responding.

In a statement after the incident, School of Education Dean Gretchen Generett offered her “sincere apologies” to students and thanked those who emailed the professor directly after the class.

So if you want to use a derogatory term for black Americans, what is it? There are many derogatory terms used by blacks to disparage White Americans. It doesn’t offend me or hurt my feelings. What a bunch of weak minded people. Maybe grow up and thicken their hide. Could it be if they spent time on the positive now and then instead of nonsense they would be more successful .

All about feelings in today's society. You know what, feelings don't mean a damn thing if you are placed into a heated situation.

So if someone says something on the now feelings list - what are snowflakes gonna do? Sit there, call a time out and state those words are not allowed?

HAHAHAHAHAHA Thats gonna go over very well - to include losing in any confrontation.

Our future (college) as 745 stated, need to grow up since the really world has NO TIMEOUTS and cares less about feelings!

The school is demonstrating that they are indoctrinating the students, and not teaching them. The professor was teaching the students. The school will have none of that!

I've always thought it was a word to describe horrible behavior in any race.

I get the point, but in this “woke” climate he didn’t think this through. Welcome to working like the rest of us regular folk with no safety net.

11:26 am, you don’t have to listen “carefully” it’s quite blatant.

Funny how blacks use the term in its many variation but once a white person uses it, even for educational purposes in a psychology class, the white teacher is fired. Wake up people. Start talking about how it’s reverse racism and it won’t stop until African Americans are held accountable for their actions. If they want to act offended when a white person uses the word then they need to quit using it and act offended when they and their people use it.
