Students at a Rhode Island school district who owe money on their lunch accounts will have the sole option of a sunflower butter and jelly sandwich until they are able to pay their balances, the district announced Sunday.
Warwick Public Schools, which has more than 9,000 pre-kindergarten through 12th grade students, said the district-wide policy will go into effect on May 13.
"If money is owed on a paid, free, or reduced lunch account a sun butter and jelly sandwich will be given as the lunch choice until the balance owed is paid in full or a payment plan is set up," said a post from the district on Facebook.
Warwick School Committee chairwoman Karen Bachus told NBC News that the sandwiches are served with the vegetable of the day, a fruit and milk.

Common fare when I was a kid. But who is being punished?
Students don’t have control over whether or not parents pay. There should be a trade option that would allow a student to help out to be current on lunch money. I’m all about accountability, but this seems unfair.
Sun butter???
Should be getting Bread & Water! No free meals for scofflaws.

I guess it is like peanut butter but made from sunflower seeds. So many kids have peanut allergies these days.
There is nothing wrong with a sandwich for lunch. It says that 70% of the students get free or reduced lunch anyway and they are 40k in the hole? If the parents don't have money make them come in on weekends and clean the school or maybe just maybe they should get a job. Im sick of the freeloaders. If little Billy or Betty have to eat a sandwich so be it! It's food. If they are embarressed oh well get over it. Stop coddling these kids. LIFE is not free. If you are taking a hand out be thankful they are giving you something. If you don't like it go hungry.
The entitlement society thinks everything should be on someone elses dime.
It's sad because for the kids, they can't help what their parents do. On the flip side, I loved PB&J when I was a kid, maybe this tastes pretty good.
If I got a PBJ sandwich, milk, a veggie and fruit for lunch I'd have thought it was a feast. Sun butter? Just like peanut butter, but made of sunflower seeds.
GOOD
Maybe the parents have no money from spending there EBT $ on crabs and shrimp......
Make sure you also charge them for the PB&J .
Looks to me like Warwick Public Schools found a humane way to deal with the issue.
