SALISBURY – Wicomico County Executive Bob Culver announced his plans this week to fully fund the Board of Education’s requests in the proposed fiscal year 2020 operating budget.
In a public hearing Wednesday, Culver presented a $148 million proposed operating budget for fiscal year 2020. The spending plan includes $800,000 above maintenance of effort to fully fund Superintendent Donna Hanlin’s Imagine 2022 initiative, which would establish universal pre-K, improve the graduation rate, and attract and retain a strong workforce.
“Your willingness to listen and recommend the funding for Imagine 2022 speaks volumes about your belief in the importance of investing in our community,” Hanlin said.
The announcement was a welcomed surprise to several educators, parents and business leaders in attendance. Eileen Johnson, representing the advocacy group Wicomico PUSH-4Education, thanked officials for listening to the group’s concerns. In recent weeks, PUSH4Education members have met with county leaders and have garnered nearly 1,000 signatures in an online petition to support Hanlin’s Imagine 2022 plan.

will someone please tell me what metrics are being used to gauge the improvement in students at the local zoo's? more money thrown down a rat hole! how much is enough? I'm betting no amount will satisfy the liberal educators anywhere in this country! More and more is always requested/needed with no resulting improvement in performance!

With the recent college scandal measuring performance from standardized tests is a false measure and easily manipulated. So how do we gauge performance of a broken system?
To the naysayers: as someone who knows about recruiting prospective new employees to this area, the school system is typically the FIRST thing these employees ask about. It has become an embarrassment to tell them that our schools lack in funding and performance.
I know for a fact that when Perdue is bringing in new top-brass, they get them off the plane and drive over to Berlin and West-O to look at new homes. Salisbury and Wicomico don't even enter the conversation.
So, Mr. Culver, Mr. Day, et al., the next thing on the platter to attract new employees and help growth in Wicomico is to loosen the stringent restrictions on septic systems.
The high bar that our state and local 'EPA' has set for passage is absolutely ridiculous. Of all the people i know who have tried to sell or buy a new home, 99% of them ran into some issue with the prospective septic system. Come on, man!!! They can't ALL be bad!! Our housing market has stagnated and the county can NOT grow until we can buy and sell homes.

When you allow the bums to be indoctrinated instead of made to learn and pass with c grade or better this is a waste of money. They can't give change, speak proper English or read past 9th grade. Recruiting more indoctrinators is worthless without the discipline. Bob has really disappointed me this time. What new taxes will he propose now. Appears he is turning on us like the BUM Hogan.

We cannot spend and hope for better education. What is the real problem? You need cooperation between teachers, students and their parents, Money will not solve the economic , social issues facing our community. How much of this money will go to the classroom vs administration? Insanity, doing the same thing and expecting different result!
