Giving a Raise to All Federal Employees Makes No Sense

The Senate’s 2019 budget contains an across-the-board salary hike of about 1.9 percent for all federal employees. That is not good news.

Though modest and deficit-neutral—the bill requires agencies to reduce spending elsewhere to offset the hikes—this pay raise is a bad idea. A growing consensus of policy analysts agree that the federal pay system needs a major overhaul.

Today, federal employees earn raises for time served rather than good work. While federal managers can offer high performers cash awards and raises, the latter are rarely used and the former are too paltry and too freely given to be effective motivators.

In a recent survey, only 26 percent of federal employees reported that “pay raises depend on how well employees perform their jobs.”

If pay raises in the federal government were actually tied to performance, most of them deserve cuts! Most of the federal workers would not be qualified to get the jobs they currently have if the interviews were held in a manner similar to how they are done outside the government. The USA jobs system has an internal bias that fosters the incapable to grow based on time in service!

Most of the federal employees are unqualified and incapable of doing their current jobs...and the private sector would NOT hire them!

Getting raises and promotions due to longevity is a union/socialist method that has been shown to be detrimental to organizations in the long run!

And this is why your taxes go up every year, for them to keep getting raises... But you fools keep thinking it is to pay for services and debt, NO they will just make taxes higher to cover that too...

Every one of those jobs comes with excellent benefits and a pension.

If i and you were a federal employee I bet we would see nothing wrong with it. Some work hard, some don't like everywhere.

Getting raises & promotions is not a union/socialist method. It has been used by millions of companies & employers for decades

Don't knock it if you haven't tried it. Fed sector is not truly here on the shore so you MUST move to where the food is. But keep knocking it since you will say you can't or won't move.

Always easy to poke at something you don't know or understand.

How do you know this? Do you work for the Federal Government? Not all Federal employees are poor performers. I agree change needs to be made. However MD State employees are paid well and their benefits are out the roof or they. Rumor has it that MD retirement funds have been raped. The Federal Government duffer's duff Affirmative Action. In case you don't know what that means let me explain. In the Federal Government if you are of a certain skin color (black) your get promoted, educated (training) and you are protected from any bad performance ratings. Also, you have your own organization BIG. Blacks in Government. You hold your meetings on Government time. It's legal. I could go on but you get my point. I know because I retired from Federal Government.

That is so true. Private sector is not guilty of promoting poor performers. I hired a realtor who's credentials where Nation wide awarding winning. Worse realtor I ever dealt with. He was a shadow. Sold my property but he had nothing to do with it. So my point is - don't put all Federal employee in the same category.

I beg to differ. There are plenty of federal jobs on the Eastern Shore. Of course not as many across the bridge. Just thing about it - poulty inspectors are Federal. Most doctors on the Shore accept Govt federal health insurance.

Wish we got as many raises as those fools do. They make more than average workers as it is. They don't need it. They should not make more than we do.
