Watermen are the bottom of the barrel in Md. , politicians don't give a $hit about this industry. Another Bay clean-up money BS disaster hidden by the media.
And don't forget all the raw sewage from Baltimore and Annapolis that raises the nitrogen levels to dangerous amounts that will be blamed on the farmers.
It can only get worse. I made a buying trip last week up the Susquehanna. For miles and miles below the Shamokin Dam, upriver of the Conowingo Dam, the river is churned up to zero visibility, many of the river islands are completely covered, with water halfway up the trunks of 80 foot trees. It rained every day of the three that I was a little north of there, and it has rained most days since I returned. In other words, there's going to be a lot more water coming over the dam for weeks, all of it full of silt.
The amount of sediment that reaches the Conowingo Dam must be staggering, and all of it has to go somewhere. It's a problem that seems to baffle state governments and the Feds. Pennsylvania seems to have the greatest ability to deal with it, as the dam is miles from Maryland, maybe by holding the power company partly responsible and working with the Army Corps of Engineers to alleviate the problem and put in place a permanent solution.
Maryland has complained for decades, and even issued weak threats, but so far, it's all fallen on deaf ears. Keep pushing legislators. With elections coming, not a single one of them has mentioned the dam and the problem that plagues the Chesapeake. Why? Because they don't have a solution and don't want to be embarrassed by it. Well, it's time that they got a little embarrassed and addressed this issue directly, with some plans on paper.
It seems to me if the dams and reservoirs can't hold any more water it has to go somewhere. You can't the politicians because we have had too much rain.On second yeah maybe you can, it must be all Donald Trump's fault.
Between Excelon dam destruction, developers adding to the run-off and nitrogen problems and the thousands of tons of chicken feces the bay is in horrible shape. Unfortunately all these businesses are big money with expensive lobbying firms, media ties and friends in politics, so they will never get the blame. As seafood gets more scarce the waterman will be blamed for overfishing. It is equivalent to asphalting the entire Eastern shore and blaming hunters for low deer population.

Is it just me, or did it take all the flotsam and jetsam floating in Annapolis Harbor til our rulers across the bridge noticed this problem?
