Supreme Court deals sharp defeat to public employee unions, banning mandatory fees

The Supreme Court dealt labor unions a sharp defeat Wednesday, ruling that teachers, police officers and other public employees cannot be forced to pay dues or fees to support their unions.

By a 5 to 4 vote, the justices overturned a 41-year-old precedent and ruled that the 1st Amendment protects these employees from being required to support a private group whose views may differ from theirs.

The decision, in Janus vs. AFSCME, strikes down laws in California, New York and 20 other mostly Democratic-leaning states that authorize unions to negotiate contracts that require all employees to pay a so-called fair share fee to cover the cost of collective bargaining.

The ruling is likely to have a political impact in many states where these unions have been strong supporters of the Democratic Party.

Yet these same employees will benefit from the salaries and benefits negotiated by the union and representation for disciplinary action.

Unions for years have lined their pockets with very little representation. In MD Glendening gave the Unions collective bargaining, as a repayment for support. When the election on which Union was to represent State Workers, the law stated they had to represent all State Workers Union or not. O'Malley did a payback to the Unions for their support and pushed through a law that the Unions good charge 1/2 dues from all State Workers to compensate for having to represent them. This mandated payment was fought but the O'Malley administration denied all challenges. The non-union members received less than proper representation. I know, since I was a union rep at that time and I quit the union until I retired.

There is no mandatory payment for teachers to either, 351. I would know, being a teacher. However, I left both voluntarily bc of the liberal insanity and general lack of attention paid to the increasingly dangerous conditions.

Maryland state employees received an email this afternoon stating dues will no longer be withheld, effective immediately.

Dues were mandatory to ASFME in the Division of Correction. And any contract that AFSME negotiated is NON-BINDING. The Governor does not have to honor the contract if he feels it doesn't suit him. In the years I paid dues the union never did squat for me except collect from me every month. Even as a member I was denied access to their detailed financial records. They refused to tell me to whom they paid all the millions of dollars each year.

Look at any AFSME handout and you will see who the union represents. This (as are most) unions is nothing but a monthly collection for the Democratic Party. It is just a big slush fund for the Dems.

154-Why do unions give 99% of their political funds to Democrats? That's certainly not representative of their membership.
