Do you think the Fire Chief and the Police Chief of Municipalities such as Salisbury should be elected positions?
If the fire chief and the police chief are both elected by the voters, citizens of Salisbury, then they would be held accountable to the citizens and not lame mayors like Jake Day, Jim Ireton and Barrie Tilghman.
An elected fire chief and police chief will be required by law to have residency in the municipality where they are elected the entire time.
If the fire chief and police chief are elected by the citizens then they have to be a resident of the city at least 1 year prior to filing as a candidate.
If the fire chief and the police chief are elected by the citizens and not the fire fighters or police officers then they would be held accountable to the citizens and not the lame Mayor's and Councils.
The the fire chief and police chief are elected by the citizens in most of Louisiana I just read. Places that allow elected fire and police chiefs allow the candidates to be non certified, but they are required to get their certifications within 2 years.
If the fire chief and police chief are elected they would be held accountable to the tax payers meaning they wouldn't be wasting our hard earned tax dollars on junk like the S.S. Hoppes.
In most places a new mayor and council means new department heads anyway meaning you get a new police chief and fire chief when they are appointed vs. elected.
I can support a resident/citizen elected fire chief and police chief.

No way! Salisbury has some of the most disinterested, ignorant voters in the United States. Just look at the last three mayors they elected.
Can you support tripling the mayor's salary to $75,000 like that group he appointed has recommended?
At its meeting today, the Salisbury City Council is going to consider the proposal to raise the mayor's salary to $75,000 per year and provide employee benefits (health insurance, retirement pension, etc.) The meeting begins at 4:30 and should be available then on Pac14 which is available over the internet at http://www.pac14.org/

Instead of increasing his salary and giving him benefits they need that money for the crazy expensive 3 year fair he wants and can not afford. As far as electing a Chief in the Fire Department and Police it would not matter. Politicians tell the people what they want to hear to get their votes. The truth does not matter. Just make the other man or woman look bad with made up stories and it usually works locally.
Absolutely NOT!! There's nothing like an elected fire chief or police chief to breed corruption and politicize both positions and departments. This is a road that should not be traveled.

Can't be done. It is against the law in Maryland to either hold or take the oath of TWO offices in any hierarchy of government legally in this state. If a candidate i.e. Fire or Police chief is appointed then they must take an oath of allegiance to the entity they serve which is NOT one in the same with that of an elected official. Sad yet
necessary. This is an opinion with case law heard by the Md. Court of Special Appeals.
Just like with the BOE, the more politicians the better I've always said.

If losers like Jake Day, Jim Ireton and Barrie Tilghman are the ones getting elected then it really doesn't matter if they are elected, appointed or hired you will get garbage.
In fact, it's better that they are NOT elected because then the blame for these issues can be placed on the elected officials for hiring them, not the citizens for electing them. Plus more elected positions just means more campaigning and less work getting done.
12:07, what are you talking about? The article does not infer or suggest that the same person hold both titles. It simply asks if those positions should be elected as opposed to appointed. Reading and comprehension go hand in hand.
