Let's start with the obvious. Greensboro NC. has 300,000 residents. Salisbury has 32,000 residents, most of which are renters.
Where are 150,000 to 300,000 people going to park and reside?
Who's going to provide security. More importantly, who's going to pay for security?
Are our hospitals prepared for a major catastrophe, (God Forbid) a car blows up or an unexpected Tornado comes through. Look, I know that's a reach but look at 9-11 or what happened in Boston.
OK, here's where things get serious, not that the above isn't serious enough. The Festival demands that the City come up with $700,000.00 in PRIVATE donations for the event. City taxpayers will pony up $100,000.00. Jake Day went to the Governor for a $150,000.00 grant for the event and was turned down. The only way the Governor would approve the funding is if the Wicomico County Parks Recreation & Tourism Board approved the $15,000.00 to file for the grant. In all, the City has $250,000.00 but must raise the additional $450,000.00 or the event won't happen.
Ja Rule and the Fyre Festival are facing a $100 million lawsuit after the "luxury" music festival they promised was a complete disaster.
Another major concern after their return from Greensboro is yet another demand in their contract stating the City must come up with 800 volunteers for the event. While I'm sure there are many people excited about an event like this coming to the Shore, let's get real. 800 people is a LOT of people, let alone volunteers. I'm a realist and I'm simply telling you, they'll not only have an extremely difficult time finding that many people, I just believe it will not happen. Sure, people will sign up but when push comes to shove I doubt 50% of them will actually show up.
Salisbury is just not set up for an event like this. As I mentioned before, there's not enough beds. The Waste Water Treatment Plant can't handle the current capacity. It will be next to impossible to get local businesses to pony up $450,000.00 for a weekend event and not see a return on their investment. The biggest hitters might come up with $10,000.00 a piece, (if you're extremely lucky) but it's tough enough to get hundreds of sponsors to pony up $20,000.00 for an entire 4th of July celebration.
FINALLY, did you know this is a THREE YEAR COMMITMENT, 2018, 2019, 2020! Jake, what have you gotten us into.
FINALLY, did you know this is a THREE YEAR COMMITMENT, 2018, 2019, 2020! Jake, what have you gotten us into.
Now that you know more about this event, what's your thoughts?

Is he going to kiss us first?
The boy mayor is living in a dream world.
Everybody seems to ignore that this is not a one time commitment, but for THREE consecutive years, 2018 through 2020!
The residents of the City are not competent to handle this. Residents of the County are fed up with the antics of the City. I agree - where will the funds and volunteers come from? There are bigger problems that need money and people put to volunteer - i.e. drug problem, crime, homelessness, etc. If there is extra money floating around, put it where it will benefit the citizens the most...and that isn't a folk festival.
It will flop
Sounds like another govt screw job to me
But what the heck is that a picture of??
9:07 AM not to rain on your parade but don't tell me where to spend my donation $$'s
What other cities besides Greensboro have hosted this event?
Jake day as the saying goes your mouth wrote a check your ass can't cash. It will be a treat to watch you squirm and try and talk your way out of this cluster.
This event will not fly! Even if it's got wings & lipstick on this pig will not fly!
The promoters haven't done their due diligence because if they had, then Salisbury wouldn't be on the radar. This area doesn't have the services to support a 200,000+ attendee event. If you look at Greensboro v. Salisbury there is absolutely NO COMPARISONS at ALL! Like someone mentioned a couple days ago in another post, Salisbury gets a rep for f-ing this show up, it will be very hard to attract other talent to the area. This means any music genre because promotions is a small business where everybody talks and the word spreads quick when an area is 'undesirable' for tours. Tour managers talk, too, and if they have a bad time some place they let other tour managers know. When was the last time you saw a major artist come to SU? Neon Tress when the screwed up the band's rider? That was Spring 2012. You haven't seen anyone in rock come back to SU who was a known name. Case & Point.
Thank you for publishing the reality and true details of the proposed event that won't be disclosed on any other local news media.
I don't have an issue with her. I have an issue with the Mayor. If she wants to embellish her resume a bit, go for it.
But his actions are irresponsible and puts the citizens in financial jeopardy.
WHATS THE FINANCIAL PENALTY IF HE BACKS OUT OF THIS THING? There HAS to be a clause in there that WE owe money if we back out..
Maybe the mayor can recruit the homeless and night people who work by the hour at the local no tell motels to volunteer to assist with the festival. Just a thought.
9:17 AM you're too funny. I highly doubt that is the case but hey, you know it all. At least that is what you keep telling us.
16 people to Greensboro? Who is the all necessary posse that we paid for? 16 people?
914: "If she wants to embellish her resume a bit, go for it."
Embellish? More like pure fiction. There's no embellishment there at all. She flat out lied about her experience. She's a fraud!
923 last weekend I told you idiots about a guarantee for the festival which wasn't disclosed but low and behold there it is $700,000.00. You can stick your fat head in the sand but people who have toured and promoted shows know the deal and this one sucks for Salisbury. Please, by all means, go ahead and keep your ostrich head in the sand until angry festival patrons kick YOUR car because they're pissed off when the sh## hits the proverbial fan.
Won't Happen.
9:14, industry standard is 1/2 the guarantee for cancellation unless the promoters back out (hope for your sakes they do). So in this case, Salisbury will have to pony up $350,000 to cancel the gig. Have fun, kids!
The $350,000 cancellation could be paid with the grant money Salisbury gets from the governor, unless Hogan gets wise and denies the Wicomico County petition for the grant.
Think about what $350,000 could do for Salisbury residents when its thrown away to cancel this farce.
Lets not overlook those "businessmen" buffoons on the City Council, Heath and Boda, who backed Day on this about to happen farce.
wait- did I read that right 700K in private donations? As is, $25 from this guy and $25 from that gal...even if it now just 450K...what the freakin' heck?
Lets see...this is the same area that let JOY 102, the Christian non-profit radio station, go off the air due to lack of funds. This is the same area that can barely support a non-profit public radio station. How many other non-profits have gone under or had really difficult times in the past few years? People obviously can barely support the things the DO care about- how in the heck is Jake expecting us to pony up our hard earned cash for this boondoggle?
9:07 yeah the article say this
I'm just curious as to why there were several paid firefighters that went with the mayor to Greensboro. Why did the mayor need them to go with him or was this just a little vacation on the city taxpayers dime?? If so taxpayers of Salisbury you should be pissed off.
I am so glad that I left the shore and live in a real city like Des Moines Iowa. It's nice to see that the Real World is nothing like that small town with it small way of thinking. Looking back I can see just how corrupt Salisbury is and be thankful that I'm no longer subjected to the bullshit that the ppl there accept on a regular basis.
10:06 maybe the trip to Greensboro was an award for raising so much cane about the firefighter dispute, being asses during the last few months, and trashing everyone who supported the volunteers and Station 13.
Chain link fences, toilet inspectors, anti-smoking police, and now this boondoggle. When are the adults going to run for office against these bums. Low voter turnout and this is the type of leadership you get. A very sad day indeed.
My question is to all the little kiddies at city hall and the mayor himself, what do you think is going to happen to all the new jobs created for you children and this folk festival fiasco when Day is released of duties come 2018 election?? Enjoy your little bit of sunshine
Got to be a mechanism in place for pay-to-play players. Wink, wink
11:08 AM According to one of Joe's earlier posts, her job is only a 3 year gig, funded by money taken away from the farmen and other departments. So she left a permanent job for a 3 year job
"I'm just curious as to why there were several paid firefighters that went with the mayor to Greensboro...."
I think they are looking for another fireboat. The one they had is dead, hasn't been in service since at least August, isn't even in Wicomico County anymore.
When all is said and done, the total guarantee for this show is really $2.1M $700K X 3 Years. Good going! Is Perdue going to donate $2.1M for this fiasco?
It's going to be a big cluster if it even materializes. Day lacks thinking skills much less forward thinking skills. Day lives in a fantasy world. He is extremely immature. It's all about parties with him. He needs to grow the hell up and start being a man. People want and need jobs that are permanent and good paying and not this nonsense this dope comes up with.
Day has a history of over promising.
11:38.....Let me correct you. This is the quote that best describes this mess...."when all is said and done, more is SAID than DONE".
Accommodations for festival goers is going to be a major problem. Greensboro has literally 100 if not more hotels/motels in or right outside of the city.
The entire thing looked good from far but I will tell you this thing is far from good. More of Jake's fantasy land politics.
Fire the mayor and all his childish friends and cancel the event---simple.
Yeah, put Jim Ireton back in charge. That way, absolutely nothing will get done, except putting the city in line for more harassment suits.
Lets not overlook those "businessmen" buffoons on the City Council, Heath and Boda, who backed Day on this about to happen farce.
September 14, 2017 at 9:47 AM
Heath and Boda are/were 'businessmen'? I am glad you were joking!
Another one of Jake's post it note promises!!!!!
Its a sad day in city history when you have to admit Jim Ireton was a lesser of evil than having Day in charge.
When I heard about the size of the festival and always wondered how they were going to handle it. I guess they think people will stay in Ocean City.
2:29
OC can easily accommodate them as far as a place to stay. I still want to know where they are all going to park once they come to Salisbury. Even the Shorebirds stadium can't hold but maybe a few thousand cars.
There lies the million dollar question, who is going to rent a place in ocean city at ridiculous costs to travel 30 miles to Salisbury for a free open to the masses festival that is going to try and jam, cram pack supposedly up to 175,000 people in downtown Salisbury for a three day festival?? Think the majority will end up staying at the beaches saying screw Salisbury.
Doing some research on this, here is the info the National Arts Council put out that Salisbury and Jake Day should have read: http://ncta-usa.org/wp/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/NFFBRO2018_20_singlepages_FINAL.pdf
Note the section on what the City needs to provide:
Although the exact division of responsibilities
between the NCTA and the local
sponsors varies somewhat from site to site,
there are some basic components that are
essential to a successful partnership.
The local partnering organizations
involved may also vary, but must include
the government of the city represented by
its chief administrator (mayor or city manager).
This is necessary in order to have
the full use of downtown or other critical
sites and good cooperation from police,
fire departments, public works and sanitation
personnel.
A second critical local organization is
a 501(c)(3) with a solid track record to
ensure fundraising success (cash budgets
are generally in the $1.3 million per year
range), strong promotional capabilities, and
sufficient staff to organize substantial components
of the event, and to take charge
when the National leaves in three years.
A National Folk Festival site must be
capable of accommodating five to seven
performance stages, a crafts demonstration
area, a family area, regional/ethnic
food sales, with parking and space for
50-75,000 people per day. Along with this
goes the means to secure electrical service,
tents, booths, sanitary facilities, trash
removal and other physical needs for a
large outdoor event.
2:46 that is not how it works with these festivals. People want walking distance or public transportation due to parking nightmares. They are all day/night affairs and people don't want to hang around all the time. You have to remember this isn't something that attracts people with extra money to spend. They want to listen to some music, watch some entertainment, go take a nap, have a barbecue in the hotel parking lot (yes they do this) then go back for awhile. Driving 30 miles isn't going to make for many happy people.
Hope Bob Culver does not allow the County to be held responsible for any expense related to this disaster. Let Palmer Gillis and Gillis Gilkerson finance this event and be held responsible since they are the only ones that can buy / given City of Salisbury property when It goes for sale.
Right 3:18. OC gets double and 3x's the rates Greensboro charges. Add to that the 30mi trip. Day really does have his head up his rear end.
"with parking and space for
50-75,000 people per day."
See parking for 50-75,000 people per day. The other 100,000 walk or take public transportation. This won't work if most have to stay in OC.
You people are stupid to think that 175K people are going to come here. You are pulling figures out of your butt based on attendance in highly populated areas. And Jake was an idiot to even stipulate an estimate of attendance without first consulting communities who have hosted, similar to our size. Most who attend are day trippers from surrounding communities and accommodations are not necessary. Smart festivals use a free trolley shuttle to shuffle people from parking to event.
Other communities the size of ours have hosted the festival such as:
Covington, Kentucky - population 41,000
Florence, Kentucky - population 31,000
Johnstown, Pennsylvania - population 21,000
Butte, Montana - population 34,000
It is amusing to read all the uneducated comments, but suggest if interested in the outcome and success of the festival, someone should contact the above listed communities to see how it all turned out.
Butte Montana has continued to host their own folk festival since they hosted the National festival from 2008 to 2010. They ran into financial difficulty in 2016 when the weather did not cooperate, but thru donations were able to pay their debt and boast that they were also able to reduce 500K off the cost of the local festival vs the national festival. For every donated dollar to sponsor the event they make $25 in return. In 2016 they had 140K in attendance but do not state previous years head count.
I am in no way affiliated with your local government, just someone who despises gossip and fake news. I suggest you educate yourselves to bring an intelligent conversation to the table and google - Campaign succeeds, Montana Folk Festival 2017 will happen.
3:36 PM - have a barbecue in the hotel parking lot
BS, no they don't as most city ordinances and hotel establishment prohibit this.
This isn't a rock concert and your comments are absolutely ridiculous.
Unbelievable BS.
Has anyone given thought of how close in proximity this so called festival is to Perdue's processing plant?? I truly and "sincerely" hope that on June 5th its not about a 95 degree day with Purdue processing in full operations with a nice East southeaster wind treating everyone to some nice aromas. Daddy can't even shut this down for wonder boys fantasyland endeavor
And if Jake had half a brain, this would have been orchestrated and financially put upon a non profit organization, instead of burdening, obligating and making liable, the city.
Most communities create a 501C organization such as an Arts Quest to take on the responsibilities. As per the Montana article the organization - Mainstreet Uptown Butte - took on the job of the festival and continued thru their organization to coordinate it. It was not the city that took the liability.
This lack of action is what will be the problem and he is an idiot to make the city liable for this event.
His ignorance potentially puts the taxpayers on the hook for any incident/injury that may occur, whether or not it's the city's fault.
Funny how some people can pull statistics off of US bureau of stats and call themselves educated. Are any of these cities in the downward spiral Salisbury is? Or how Salisbury has become the backyard rental town to SU and eastern corrections inmate families and majority of recently released? Or how about the absolute saturation of heroin in your city that fuels the most lucrative and thriving small business in your area, that would be the drug treatment in/out patient programs. Or how majority of the people in these programs clock here from Baltimore/DC region because of easier access and with that bring that element of trouble
I think that should fall in the lap of Glanz, she's supposed to be on top of such "educated" requirements for the better of the city
4:36 PM - "Funny how some people can pull statistics off of US bureau of stats"
I did not pull the stats off any US Bureau site. The stats, facts and figures are from the actual towns. You were too lazy to do some research on your own and then have the audacity to criticize someone who did.
I suggest if you want more information you get off your butt and do the research yourself instead of posing idiotic questions that you can easily answer yourself with a bit of constructive typing.
If you need more information on Butte I suggest you google - Mainstreet Uptown Butte and then go to the "about us" section.
4:36 PM you really are stupid to think Ghettobury is the only community with a heroin problem. NYC also hosted the festival and they have a higher rental rate than we do. Did you have a point or you just trying to trash someone who took the time to actually research a topic that you are too lazy to?
There is a detention center in Butte and the State Prison is 35 miles away. Based on similar facts I am sure they have the same issues we do..
Seems like Day and his friends are trying to bankrupt whats left of this town, theres no escaping the liability. They picked June for the least chance of rain...remember how hot and humid June is. The attendance will be small time compared to the other big cities...even if the other impossibles are somehow fudged. Hard to fathom theyd put this little city at such risk. I guess bankruptcy will make it easy for lots more section 8 stuff?
4:04 So you chose as your stats info from 8-10 years ago. You failed to mention that in the last 8 years the festival has grown in size and has been held in communities far larger than Salisbury. The NFF itself boasts crowds of 175000 and up.
I despise when people try to twist facts to their liking. And o btw I also am not affiliated with Salisbury
5:25 PM ha ha ha, you obviously have comprehension issue and are the one twisting words. My comment was clear. Sorry you are unable to digest the facts.
My stats are from current figures. I suggest you try reading the article before you comment further and make yourself look like a bigger fool
5:25 PM - I despise when people try to twist facts to their liking
Then you must really hate yourself because that is exactly what you are doing and it's obvious you did not read or comprehend the comment.
4:06 I am gypsy. We have huge weddings and funerals. Many people from all over attend. We have barbecues in hotel parking lots all the time. We only stay in nice places and they allow this. I'm talking about all over NJ, NY, Baltimore, Philly, Atlantic City and N. VA. Never been told not to do this. I can even post YouTube video if you don't believe.
5:25 PM Typical troll to intentionally miss the point of the comment and try to incite an argument. You are the epitome of whats wrong with this place.
3:36 PM that's the most amazing ridiculous comment. "You have to remember this isn't something that attracts people with extra money to spend"
175K of poor people come. And they all bbq in the hotel parking lot?
No one buys hotel rooms, food, booze, gifts and crafts? But according to the article mentioned they make $25 for every $1 in donation. So if we get $250,000 in donations we will make, hypothetically, $625,000.
But only people with no money attend?
Then you go on to say you are a gypsy? But you have all this in-depth experience on how to run a festival.
What a loon, go smoke another one.
Wow you people need to get off the shore once in awhile. People barbecue in hotel parking lots all the time. It's called Tailgating. It happens at big festivals, horse shows, other concerts where many concert goers are staying in the same hotel, car shows, etc. I was just at the Capital Challenge horse show in DC. Stayed in Arlington. People were tailgating and yes using barbecue grills in several places on the hotel grounds. It's custom. Educate yourself. Use Google and look up tailgating hotel parking lots. What a bunch of bumpkins from podunk Salisbury.
7:43 You are the one who is smoking something. Yes I am gypsy. Where did I claim to have "in-depth experience on how to run a festival"? What you have done is assume I made another comment. You have just made the proverbial ass out of yourself as I have only made this comment and the other one and not any other.
Day's ready to bust a load over this nonsense festival. He is a whack job. This is something that is only going to benefit maybe 5% of Sby residents. If that. It's not going to help anyone become a homeowner. It's not going to raise anyone wages. It's not going to help the minority community. It's not going lower the crime rates. It's not going to create any more jobs. This is all something to be proud of and excited over. Long term things. Not some nonsense like this festival.
86% of all statistics are made up on the spot.
I saw Mayor Day driving through town last week dialing then talking on his cellphone. I guess he feels he has the same right to do so as the police do.
Democrats do it all the time. Didn't you watch Hillary debates with Trump. It is called pivoting.
he a turd
Hey fake Day and are the little children he's created jobs for I as an avid motorcycle enthusiast checked out the bike week event this year and if its outcome says anything about the future successes of local events your asses are in trouble. Saturday at 1:00 pm VACANCY signs flashing away in ocean city. Think your enthusiasm for a national folk festival is going to bite you in the ass
The one thing anyone knows about business and putting together business plans/proposals its all just a bunch of numbers pulled out of thin air. They are mere guesses, estimates, enthusiastic outcomes to get people to fund ones dream. The guess of between 15-30 million dollar revenue for local economy is a pretty broad range there fake day. My queate us after you waste all this funding and grants on main street and an amphitheater what say you Day will actually benefit Salisbury after this three year fairy tale run? Will the homeless be allowed to "legally" turn your theater into a shelter or is Fatman on bicycle going to stay patrolling to run them off. And how is the beautification of main going to benefit the traffic of criminals going to court and the only type businesses on main street today, LAWYERS offices
They barely get enough donations for fireworks and Christmas lights.
Just as a comparison Ocean City has 200,000-250,000 people there on any weekend in August. So if you have ever been there during that time then move o.c. to Salisbury MD just picture that it's going to be UGLY very ugly. Not to pee on anyone's parade it would be a great event to have IF you had what's needed to do it I don't believe Salisbury does maybe I'm wrong but I don't think so.
Obviously the only way out of this is hold emergency elections and get Joe Albero in there, PROVEN businessman to clean up the mess and save the city
I expect Mike Dunn of greater Salisbury to ride in on his white horse and save the day!
So they have to come up with all that money in donations? Why would anyone want to donate to that? This isn't something that is going to make a positive difference in a needy person's life. This whole thing is not going to benefit many at all. Day is in the same class as a common thief. He is spending tax payers money foolishly and selfishly so he can have fun is what it amounts to. He is such a loser. He is so common and low class.
Not too late to back out now!!!
Jake Day, Julie Glsntz, Tom Stevenson, Mike Dunn: AKA : Salisbury MD, Wicomico county version insane clown posse
Don't mind saying how much I don't like that S O B .
