"Family Member" Speaks Out About Texas Woman Buried Alive In Ocean City, Maryland

Family Member said...

Since I was there I'd like to set the record straight on this. This was a young woman who just wanted to walk out on the beach to see the ocean after 20+ years of being away from her hometown of MD. The separated part is not exactly accurate. Her parents went up to the room to bed ahead of her never thinking she wouldn't return after a quick walk on the beach. When she did not return after 15-20 minutes they went looking for her. Apparently some stupid human being dug a 5 foot hole and left it. It was dark, she didn't see it and fell in and couldn't get out! Sand starts to cave in when you try to claw at it to get out people! Then the tractors, for whatever reason, didn't see her and buried her alive. The autopsy has revealed no drugs, she was not passed out nor was she sleeping!!! The ones at fault here are whoever felt the need to dig a 5 foot hole and leave it, and the beach tractor drivers for not looking in the hole before pushing sand in to fill it!!! Her family is devastated and now have to bury their daughter, sister, Aunt, and wife so please have some respect and stop with the negative comments people. On behalf of her parents I beg you!!!!

I'm so very sorry...so tragic. I'm also sorry for the "stories" that followed her tragic death. 😢

Why did nobody hear her yelling for help? I had been to ocean city tons if tines and stay in this area. I know people walk at night on the beach and boardwalk. Why did nobody hear her? This is what I don't understand.

I'm so, so sorry. We were in OCMD that week, and were horrified when we learned this happened. (((hugs)))

Why is every date on comments Aug 4, when at least 8 have been added on the 6th and at least 100 added on the 5th?

Such a tragic lost, prayers are with all her friends and family.

Regarding the comment that the life guards should've prevented the person(s) from digging the hole. It could've been dug after the lifeguards left for the day. It was a tragic accident and nobody except the person(s) who dug the hole and didn't fill it are to blame. May her family find peace.

While I am sorry to hear about this young lady's dead, I still do not think we have heard 100% of the story. A 30 yr old lady walking alone on the beach at 2am ... there is something else going on here. I think we should wait to hear the entire story before we condemn anyone in this horrific incident.

btw...yes...something should be done to deter digging of the holes.

In Ocean Pines you are in are thoughts and prayers .......very sad story

Wow...did anybody ever think that maybe it was more than one person digging a hole and they helped each other out of the hole? No. People are just assuming it was just one person

How would the tractor driver know, don't they just skim the beaches with their tractors. If she didn't see the hole how could he? Also, how did they find her? If the hole was covered. TRAGIC AND SUCH A BEAUTIFUL YOUNG LADY

Certainly this is tragic but I would like to offer up another possibility. I was at Ocean City that weekend and we had storms on Friday night that caused crazy waves on Saturday. We walked down to the beach on Saturday and while there is typically a gentle slope down to the wate there was literally or 4-5 foot cliff in the sand. If we had walked down to the water we never would have gotten back up that cliff. The sand was very loose as well. They were working to flatten out that "cliff" so that people could go on the beach the next day but yes maybe someone dug a hole but perhaps it was a pocket left by the moving of sand. Seeing the beach in that condition it seems plausibe that a hole could even completely invisible until you fell through the sand. This certainly doesn't change how horrible this must be for the family or the situation with the tractors.

It is incredulous to me that people are so heartless. I pray nothing like this ever happens to any one of them. How would they feel if attacked in the same manner by those who lack any degree of empathy/sympathy? I have to wonder if they find pleasure in spewing such venom. Is this what the world has come to? How & why this poor woman died is irrelevant. The bottom line is that she left this world & that she died in a most unfortunate way. I pray that she rests in peace & that her family will find some degree of solace with their cherished memories. I feel so sorry for them.

As a parent that just lost a son I feel your pain. Praying for your entire family during this very sad time.

So it's a crime to walk alone on the beach?

I was in that very area at 550 that morning. The sand combers were driving quite fast. I had to actually step back from one that blasted past me and actually thought to myself they were driving too aggressively. I went back to my hotel around 620. I am beside myself thinking I walked within just a few feet from this woman and didn't see or hear anything. I wish I had before the tractors had moved to the other side of the dock I used to acces the beach. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. This is truly heartbreaking.

ALL of this is simply speculation based on what Ocean City has released (not much). Natural causes, without some sort of explanation, isn't an example of good citizen communication. It is how they do things though.

I feel so sorry for the family of the victim. This story has given me chills since I first heard of it last week. But there seems to be parts of this story that make no sense and are missing. I hope the town isn't covering up anything.

this is so sad and unfortunate. My heart goes out to all of you who loved and knew her. It was a unintentional tragedy. May she rest in peace.

I don't think the tractor driver should be blamed as they weren't expecting to see anyone in the hole and they work on the sand every night without incident. Is it required of their job to check? This is just a horrible tragedy.

Holes in the sand are a problem. I have read some people saying that the lifeguards should be stopping people from digging. I don't know about you, but if I am being pulled out to sea by a rip tide I sure as hell don't want the lifeguards hunting for hole diggers. Their job is in their title, "LIFE" "GUARD"! I want them watching for people having trouble, going farther out than they intended, watching out for sharks, SAVING LIVES.
Who said this hole was dug before the lifeguards went off duty? Just like this young lady couldn't see the hole, neither can the tractor driver, despite the lights which will merely reflect off the surface of the sand.

To the family: My heart breaks for your loss. I know what it is to lose a child, and a sibling and no words offer true consolation. I pray you will find peace, day by day.

I have been so saddened and sickened since I heard about this. What a terrible tragedy! I am so sorry for the loss of Ashley and feel horrible for her family. Someone out there knows WHO dug this hole, but I seriously doubt anyone will come forward unless surveillance caught something. People, if you see someone digging a deep hole and not covering it back up you need to report it to someone; don't just assume that someone else will. Maybe a death-bed confession years down the road will reveal who was the culprit. If you're reading this now, please clear your conscience and turn yourself in!

After hearing the news, I kind of figured she tried to get out of the hole and the sand tumbled in. I didn't realize the tractors created more problems for her. What a sad circumstance! I am sorry for this family's loss!
I have been known to walk the beach at night. Growing up near the ocean and now living 3 hours away from any beach, I miss hearing the surf. It is relaxing and comforting. I am sorry that someone else's ignorance created her demise. Walking along a beach at night alone is not recommended but never not condemned, at least not that I ever heard about.
My prayers are with this family and I hope they will heal from their loss.

My kids have dug holes but their father&I always make sure they're filled in and packed down tight, it disgusts me that ppl have the audacity to say"well you're not supposed to be on the beach after dark anyway", like it was her fault she died, the beach is beautiful at night and ppl like to relax with a walk on the beach, Ive already had police see me on the beach at night and didn't say a wored! Someone died and their family is trying to grieve, show some respect, if you don't have anything positive to say then don't even comment!

Anonymous said...

I have heard even filling them back in, at times it is still not safe. Just do not dig deep holes.

No matter what happened this is an awful tragedy and my condolences to the family. The problem I have is the fact that I do believe there are some missing pieces to the story. To dig a hole in Ocean City that was large enough for a person to be unable to escape from is a tremendous feat. It would have to be far enough from the ocean to avoid the tide change first of all. Secondly, this would have taken multiple hours of extremely difficult digging to maintain the structure. I can go on and on about this , but anyone knows digging a hole like that which dif not collapse during the process, would have drawn a pretty sizeable amount of attention. Like I said it's an awful tragedy but the entire event seems a little sketchy!

To all those with the negative, cruel, and heartless comments...if you can't say something kind, loving and compassionate to this grieving family SHUT UP! MY DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS!!

Thank you for speaking out and putting it into all the rumors and innuendo. This is a sad truth but I'm glad it's finally out there

People are so ridiculously ignorant. A woman lost her life in a seemingly bizarre accident, as the story is told to us, and now people want to ban holes. The fact of the matter is this was on 2nd Street, right down from the Purple Moose or the Clam. All locals know that the beach patrol combs that beach from midnight to sunrise to prevent vagrants and people sleeping on the beach. There is no way a 5 foot hole or a woman fallen 30 feet from the surf would be over looked. People who question it are not being insensitive or unkind. They see the story is impossible and suspect something else happened, perhaps even fowl play and want the truth.

Ok I guess I will be considered heartless, but it is my opinion, which is based on facts. The young woman who lost her life should have familiarized herself with city ordinances! " Therefore, it is in the public interest and in the furtherance of the public health, safety and welfare that it be prohibited for any person other than the police or maintenance personnel to be on the beaches of Ocean City between the hours of 12:00 midnight on one day and 5:00 a.m. on the following day. Said Mayor and City Council of Ocean City also specifically finds that the sleeping of persons on the beaches of Ocean City during the hours of darkness and twilight is inherently dangerous because the same period of time is utilized to maintain and clean the beaches, utilizing various machines, some of which weigh ten tons or more and are designed to gouge, dig, rip, scarify and sift the upper layers of the beach (the same layers of the beach normally utilized for sleeping); and that in order to effectively clean and maintain said beach areas, utilizing the mechanical methods before stated, the said machines and beach cleaning vehicles must also have the right-of-way at all times over pedestrians and other persons, whether moving or stationary. Therefore, it is in the public interest and in the furtherance of the public health, safety and welfare that sleeping on the beaches of Ocean City be prohibited between the hours of 10:00 p.m. one day and 6:00 a.m. the following day.

(Code 1972, § 28-6)" So she is the one who was WRONG in the first place!
