JUST IN: Medical Examiner Rules Ocean City Death Accidental 8-2-17

OCEAN CITY, MD – (August 2, 2017): The Ocean City Police Department has been provided an official ruling in the death investigation that began on Monday, July 31. The victim, Ashley O’Connor, 30, of Plano, Texas, was found on the beach in the early morning hours in the area of 2nd Street.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has ruled the death to be accidental caused by asphyxia due to suffocation. The preliminary investigation revealed that O’Connor walked onto the beach alone at approximately 2 a.m. and was later discovered in a hole covered by sand. It remains to be determined at this time if O’Connor fell into the hole or climbed in on her own accord.

A portion of the beach was closed on Monday as the Ocean City Police Forensic Services Unit worked to recover the body from the sand with assistance from Maryland State Police crime scene technicians. The body was removed at approximately 4:15 p.m. and the beach was open to the public at approximately 5 p.m.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Ocean City Police Department Major Crimes Unit at 410-723-6604.

Question: How do you accidentally bury yourself in the sand?????? This seems super sketchy.

How does someone just get in a hole?

You post what u want people to know not what they need to know. What about wcso M. Fisher?

What? Has anyone ever just been walking along the beach and fell in a hole that swallowed them up? This seems rediculous

Like I said, it reminds me of the KKK days, where the local authorities ruled hangings, with the victims hands tied behind their back, suicides. OC officials have incredible clout over even the medical examiner's office. It all about the incredible amount of potential revenue loss that would result during the last month of the summer tourist season. All about the money. Always is , in OC.

Crawled in a hole and buried herself on the beach. Like we are really supposed to believe that!

Isn't it almost impossible to smother yourself? Wouldn't your adrenaline kick in - EX: Purposely drowning yourself??

B.S.!!!!!!!!!

Yes, that's 9 exclamation points

Murder is bad for business and bad for tourism.
It's a cover up in more ways than one!

Anonymous said...

So why is the investigation "ongoing"?

Can ocean city town officials please inform the public on the location of all quicksand in OC to prevent another accidental death like this

M. Fisher got a sweetheart of an inside deal!

Could have been a BLM murder that's how they operate.

She didn't know the Clintons, did she???

Amazing how fast the cause of death was determined. Can you say cover up.

Have a relative who was caught in a cave in of a deep hole (9 ft) and death was ruled accidental asphyxiation as his chest was crushed by the weight of the dirt.
Could this happen in wet beach sand, especially in the dark with no one around to help? Probably.

Something stinks!

I'm with Joe; not buying it.

1:13 it says asphyxia due to suffocation so no that's not what happened. Suffocation is a form of asphyxia and means her external respiratory orifices were obstructed and unable to take in air.

Was it quick sand? Please elaborate on your friend. How did the sand get on top of him in the 9ft hole?

Anonymous said...

i figured it was an accidental overdose and some "friends" covered her up thinking she was dead. then she suffocated in the hole. i really don't buy that she just fell in a 3 ft hole and suffocated. unless she was 2 ft 6 inches tall, then maybe it's a possibility.

Are you guys kidding? You read warnings about sand pockets from covered over sand digs at the beach all the time. Many people die at beaches in America from this type of thing all the time. Google it. It actually causes rescues in ocean city and rehoboth regularly too. No murder, no foul play, just sand doing what it does. I agree that the media is usually covering for this beach, but not this time. It has all the hallmarks of a sand collapse. Family was nearby, she suddenly disappeared, it happens quick. Despite the silly comments you can't easily dig out of a sand collapse. Just a tragedy, that's all. Come on guys.

It seems the autopsy results haven't taken very long to come in. Something seems fishy here. Where were the parents who were with her just prior to the death, and what are their explanations? They wouldn't have left her on the beach alone at that hour.

According to News4 out of Wash DC her family saw her last when she was walking on the beach alone at 2am. One of the possibilities police are looking at is that she was either asleep or unconscious (remember she had a wrist band on the type used at bars to show she was off age) on the beach and maybe one of the tractors used to comb debris ran over her causing her to be covered with the sand.

We lived on the Boardwalk for over 30 years. In the evening when everyone left the beach we would go out and collect all the abandoned sand toys. I can't tell you how many holes we saw dug that people hadn't covered up. I'm 5'4" and I remember standing in some that only my head was showing.
Wouldn't be a stretch to think she may have been intoxicated and fell into a hole that had been dug by a beach goer earlier in the day, became unconscious due to the fall and then smothered in the sand. Then one of the beach cleaner ran over her covering her with all but her arm showing.

4:41 manner and cause of death are immediate. Toxicology is what takes time.

There is a big difference in a 9 ft hole and one which is 3 - 4 feet deep hole. One is way over anyone's head and a cave in can occur while trying to climb out the other one could stand and walk out of practically. When was the last time anyone has seen a 5-6 foot long, 3-4 foot deep hole in the sand downtown by a life guard stand?

Anonymous said...

They, the life guards, don't allow you to dig holes like that anymore and it was in front of a lifeguard stand, according to the lifeguard whose stand she was found near.

Her stab would is being blamed on the groomer blade.
