Young Child, Grandmother Struck in Pedestrian Collision In Ocean City

Ocean City police are reminding citizens to yield to pedestrians in marked crosswalks not controlled by a traffic signal after a woman and her three-year-old granddaughter were struck Thursday evening.

On Thursday, July 13, 2017, at approximately 9:40 p.m. Ocean City police responded to 1st Street and Baltimore Avenue in response to a pedestrian collision involving a three-year-old female and her grandmother. Officers determined that the grandmother was pushing the young girl in a stroller from east to west in a marked crosswalk at the time of the collision. Two lanes of traffic had stopped to allow the pedestrians to cross, however, the vehicle in the third lane did not stop. The vehicle, a Volkswagen Jetta driven by a 17-year-old female of Berlin, MD, ultimately struck the two pedestrians.

The child was flown to Peninsula Regional Medical Center by Maryland State Police Trooper 4 helicopter as a precautionary measure. The grandmother was also transported to Peninsula Regional Medical Center by Ocean City EMS. Both suffered non-life threatening injuries. Officers determined that the driver of the vehicle was at fault and was cited for failure to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk. Alcohol was not a factor in this collision.

The Ocean City Police Department is reminding residents and visitors to yield to pedestrians in marked crosswalks not controlled by a traffic signal, particularly on Baltimore Avenue. Motorists are also advised to use extreme caution in areas with heavy pedestrian traffic.

Being 17 was a factor. Was being on a cellphone a factor, too?

I say cite the grandmother for not paying attention and putting her young charge at risk. Drivers can't see you in the dark against all the bright and flashing lights. She should have waited until it was safe to cross. The inexperience driver had no idea why the other 2 cars stopped if her view of the peds was blocked by a truck or giant SUV that everybody drives now.
The speed limit thru there should be 15 mph!

This is a bad intersection to cross. The crosswalks aren't marked as such and about 50% of the people cross from the wrong corner. If crossing from the correct corner, there is a signal that tells the pedestrian when not to cross. The grandmother apparently ignored the lit up "hand" telling her not to cross while traffic was given a green light.

The crosswalk is horribly Mark thanks for the Cruisers a few months ago they tore up the crosswalk with all their burnouts hard to tell where the crosswalk is starts and ends so blame it on the Cruisers it's their fault once again they're the ones that tore it up and make it hard to see

There is no signal at N. 1st and Baltimore Ave. for Mom Mom to ignore.

OC needs to make crosswalks safe. It's not all that hard. Marking, lighting, education, enforcement.

No I'm sorry the State Highway Administration needs to mark their Highway properly not the Town of Ocean City Coastal Highway Baltimore Philadelphia Avenue ..

agreed 622 and hey 609, don't blame one of the cash cow weekends on a few idiots that get away with being donks - knowing there is no law enforcement around. OC is on the hook for not FIXING things torn up from months ago. NO EXCUSE at all!

I'm sure the darkness played a part. 9:40pm
The driver probably could see her. I doubt she was wearing reflective clothing.
