Dress code, series of events lead to honor roll student's suspension

HARRISBURG, N.C. -- A senior at Hickory Ridge High School worries her college future is in jeopardy, and it's all stemming from a shirt she wore.

On Wednesday, Summer wore a green shirt that rests just off the tops of her shoulders and exposes her collarbone.

She says, while she was eating lunch, the principal approached her in the cafeteria, asking if she had a jacket.

In the suspension notice from Hickory Ridge High School, the principal and Summer apparently had an interaction where the principal told Summer to cover up with a jacket. The report states Summer responded with, "I think my shirt is fine". The principal then told Summer that her lower back was also completely exposed, so she was still not in compliance with dress code. Summer repeats again, "My shirt is fine."

Summer did not have a jacket, but a friend offered to loan her one.

How telling of the attitude ingrained into todays students by their parents (and society) that, instead of saying anything like, "I'm sorry, Mr. Jones, I thought it was okay", she dismissively and arrogantly tells an ADULT in authority that her "shirt is fine".
Not according to the powers that be, and she is NOT one of them.
As a teenage and a student, she has RULES to live by; she's been conditioned and taught that she doesn't have to abide by them and is empowered to say whatever to whomever, anytime she wants.
Its too bad she never had to deal with MY school principal or any of my teachers. Or a parent that thinks a child talking to an adult like that needs further "instruction".
Of course, most of us grew up, have careers, houses, cars, and family.
With her, she'll probably be pregnant at 17, drop out of school, have 2-4 more keeds, and have everyone with white privilege send her a check for the next 50-60 years.

sounds like she just has a problem with authority. sure the dress code was bogus and the shirt she had on was fine, but she caused the entire situation by not complying with the principals demands. If you take away the principals authority in the school, you are left with chaos. I hope she does lose her scholarship. You reap what you sow buttercup.

She chose to flirt with the line on the dress code and now she's whining because she got burned. Not feeling much sympathy here.

Quit being an idiot and next time put a jacket on.

Put on a jacket, finish school, go on to college. Not all that complicated is it?

Follow the dress code. How hard is that? If she can't read the rules she shouldn't be a doctor..

There was a story about a Hagerstown 18 year old, pregnant, who will NOT be allowed to walk across the graduation stage AND now this WITH an attitude.

Stories aren't happy anymore and that's sad.

She DID put a jacket on and that shirt looks like it is on her shoulders to me.

She blatantly told the principal and the sro that she would not comply with their instructions. So she was suspended for insubordination. Now she will graduate, but will not be able to walk across a stage. She will still get her scholorships. She really needs to get over herself.

4:07- So where is the image of her back? Also, as a graduate of 1994, guys couldn't wear tank tops, "wife beaters," etc. So, she got her privilege checked. So to speak.

But your ok with cop bashing right? Let me guess when YOU decide it's ok

READ the article. It's kinda funny how the rules don't apply to her. Kids.

Are you saying they wear tank tops today? If so, gross.

1:56 Did you miss the part about her 4.4 GPA and full scholarship to a university or do you have a problem with reading? Additionally, the article states that there has been a history of issues with the principal and the student, hence why the parent was to be involved.

As she points out, the school has students on the sex offender registry and drug dealers that are walking at graduation but they want to go after her. I'm glad she is making a stand. Republican with a brain here.

The shirt started out to be fine, till she got cold and had "Pokies", and then it was clear it wouldn't do. That is the real story, not the fake news.

5:58 said "the article states that there has been a history of issues with the principal and the student".

Maybe her history of issues is because she is the problem.

Pity the poor idiot that marries this piece of work.

No more off the shoulders than the drapes us girls wore for our senior portraits. However, I would imagine that a young lady as intelligent as she seems to be would have had acted more maturely and chosen a better response than the one she gave. Not all battles need to be instantly fought.

Your a typical democrat snowflake. Trolling! Almost got me lol.

The top commentary is written by stiff necks who must do not kids. Nothing wrong w/ this childs outfit. Petty. Why should she apologize. A 4.4 says she has more than potential. Administration seems like there is a personal grudge.

Right

Some of the most miserable hating people comment on here. This is a poor reason to take away her graduation. The Local board didnt even do that when the kids at Bennett was caught drinking

Her medical career is in jeopardy?? GOOD. Break a rule in the medical profession and somebody dies.

No respect for authority. She should join the military instead of going to college. She needs a lesson or two.

First and foremost, she knew the shirt violated school policy, showing the shoulders, she wore it and her mother allowed her to wear it. So the Principal attempted to do his job to enforce school policy. The little girl is nothing but a by-product of the way she was raised, to disrespect authority....

Pokies? Are you in third grade? The proper word is nipples. Sometimes they become erect on men and women when cold. OMG, you people are so weird about the human body.

Who really believes that she wore the top high up on her shoulders the way it is shown in the pictures? If you do I have some prime property I would love to sell you. The family must be snowflakes, who names their child Summer? A bunch of liberal hippies that's who.

When she was 12 she had several disagreements with the principal mostly on policy issues.. so when she was 17 she took a stand and refused to move until her mommy was called... maybe this will be a movie or MTV award. I can't think of anything more heroic.. please call Maxine waters and brief her at once.

9:10 What universities did your children get full scholarship too? It would be ironic that in 10 years she is the physician that you need to save your life.

Attitude is everything.

5:58...no I didn't miss it.

My point was that, with an attitude like that, her future is bleak.
What's the next step for Ms. Einstein? Telling the university that the Physics test is racially biased and she WILL get a passing no matter what?
Or she won't pay no damn fine for speeding because she really wasn't -- the cop doesn't know what he's talking about?
What she needs is a 24-7 assistant to slap her every time she opens her mouth.
Lastly, you think a 4.4 grade average in today's school system is an outstanding piece of work???
LOL!
I could likely ask her ten questions about history, politics, or science (questions that regularly USED to appear on tests) and if she got 3 correct, I'd be surprised.
Scholastic achievement in today's schools generally means you came to school for the year.
Did papers on white privilege, the haunting effects of slavery, how bad the USA is, how we can fight and resist the evil capitalists, and why math is racist.
And occasionally, appear in the middle of an interstate highway (during school hours!) to protest whatever you're offended by lately.
You are too easily impressed.

Funny seeing these race comments on here when its clear to see that child is no more black than she is white. Definitely biracial so why the race comments? Smh.

There must be no parents on here or ones who have kids which attend local high schools cause this child is dresses way more appropriate then ive seen ones dressed around here even if the top hit her shoulders. There should b bigger dish to fry. Petty to say the least
