Chief: OC Police Officer Departures ‘Very Concerning;’ Quality Of Life Issues Cited By Some In Exit Talks

OCEAN CITY — For a variety of reasons including “quality of life issues,” there is a not-so-subtle employee drain in the Ocean City Police Department, resulting in the department requesting one additional officer in its fiscal year 2018 budget, raising concerns over whether one is enough.

During a budget work session on Monday, Ocean City Police Department (OCPD) Chief Ross Buzzuro told the Mayor and Council his budget was largely similar to last year’s with one exception. Buzzuro explained for a variety of reasons, his department was requesting one additional police officer to meet the growing challenges created by, among other things, the loss of seven experienced officers over the last year for a variety of reasons, not the least of which were quality of life issues, according to the department exit interviews.

The OCPD maintains a full complement of 105 sworn officers, but that number has dipped over the last year. The seven officers that have left have cited the increased demands of a grueling summer season, lots of overtime and an inability to ask for and receive needed time off at other times of the year.

The quality of life they are talking about is with the police chief, the town manager and the mayor and council.

Been there, done that. They should have actual barracks for their officers, especially the summer officers, so that those O.T. and court hours after a regular shift don't sap the total life out of them. Driving between 20 and 40 minutes after working a twelve hour night shift and five hours of waiting for and being in court is a killer. By the time you get home, you've got about 3 hours of sleep before getting up to get ready for the next shift.

That's why it's called a job and not fun time. If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen.

Question: This may not be a good question...but question NTL. Why don't they have a barrack for summer employees where they can sleep and recoup as needed. If bunks were available and the summer help didn't have to put out rent...perhaps they could get more people and more quality people join the ranks. Just asking...I really don't know how things operate.

There are enough cops in OC to have 3 on every block of the boardwalk. They need judges that won't let punks come to OC, commit crimes, and get off with a slap on the wrist. Saw one with multiple bags of cocaine and a loaded handgun get a year probation. I had a guy intentionally run me over with his car and he got 8 days in jail that he served on the weekends. The cops lock all these people up and then the charges just get dropped or pled down to nothing.
