Single mom goes viral after using tax return to pay rent for a year

Most of us anxiously wait for tax-return season so we can buy a new gadget, or redecorate a room or take a much-needed trip, and while there is nothing wrong with splurging on yourself, some people chose to use the money a little differently.
Christina Knaack, a single mom and recovering addict from South Carolina never thought she'd go viral after sharing a message about her tax return on her Facebook.

"I got back $5600 on my taxes. Instead of buying my kids the latest Jordans or fancy electronics I paid my rent for the YEAR," wrote Knaack. "I'm a single mom and I do it all buy myself on a minimum wage job. I kno [sic] that a roof over my kids' head is what's important. My kids don't want for anything because my priorities are straight. And this also means I will have that extra 450 a month to do things with my kids."
People sent all kinds of comments to Knaack, some positive and others not so much

Many commentors posted things like "good job" or "smart thinking" or a short congratulatory comment.

I wish all people, including county government employees, thought like that. Instead of Harley's, prepay expenses you know you already expect....not more toys.

I agree with her thinking, but i believe a better idea would be for her to adjust her withholding so she would get larger paychecks and not get such a huge tax return. No need to give uncle sam a tax free loan.

How could anyone criticize that?

I was a single mom and I deposited my return every year of my life and when something important came up...I was prepared. No begging or ending up on the street....just good common sense.

That's a person with some self-esteem and ability to plan, unlike lots of others we know. Thank you!!

That is a really cool idea! I usually hold my refund to go towards my property tax bill each each year so the refund is a joke. As soon as you get the refund, the state of Maryland sends you a property tax bill in June, Tag Registration renewal, non resident income taxes to Delaware because I live in Md and my wife works in DE. Maryland Income taxes, because I can only take partial credit for the DE taxes I paid, so I have double taxation! Also state mandated Auto, and homeowners insurance!!! Increased Health insurance premiums due to Obama Care, and hidden taxes and fees in every Damn thing we need to live!!! The American Revolution was started over lesser things than this!
I forgot also to mention a yearly 60 dollar landfill fee that used to be part of the county taxes we paid years ago. The landfill is run by county employees, paid by the tax payers. This is another slap in the face to the people who live and pay taxes to Wicomico County! Do wonder why people dump their appliances and trash in the woods?

Single person with a child will get earned income credit and get back lots of money. Many don't save it they blow it on big screen tvs or things they don't really need but they get money in their pocket and think they are rich but never plan for the future. Stop criticizing some for doing the right thing.

Eh....I appreciate her doing something good with the money. But that's overlooking the fact that this is someone who works minimum wage and pays no taxes, but receives such a large refund due to the EIC and child credits. Subsidized rent, subsidized healthcare, subsidized food, and 5k+ tax returns. This is what is economically ruining the country. And this story went viral because having common sense is somehow extraordinary these days.

60 bones a year is cheaper than 80 every three months. Cheap enough to cover the insurance on my old pickup/dump truck.

Working minimun wage is the equivalent of being a peasant in feudal England. The king/corporation gets the big money and the working poor get the crumbs.

I applaud her for that!! Great job!! I'm single mom too and I always use mine for bills too. Smart idea great safety net incase you are sick and can't work you know bills always are still coming no matter what. So good for you for making sure your kids and you have a roof over your head! Also great job recovering I'm sure some addicts even going through recover would slip up with that much money in their hand. Just shows you do have your priorities straight.

I applaud her for doing that. That's awesome! I am a single mom also making very little above minimum wage with two kids. The struggle is tough and when your out sick you fall behind so quickly because the bills are still going to come know matter what. So I say good for her very responsible move in making sure no matter what her and her kids have a home to live in another year, as something that we may fear living week to week on our paychecks. Also she is a recovering addict I've never been an addict but I have seen some and with that much money in their hand I'm sure they would be tempted. So I applaud her for being a very responsible mother and taking care of herself and kid or kids!!

Wow if only the ghetto parents of the shore could read this maybe they wouldn't waste their refund on a new car that'll be repossessed in 3 months when they cant pay on it anymore! But then again who are we kidding?

The government does not collect 5400$ In taxes on a Minimum wage job. Why should ANYONE get more from the Government than was withheld from their earnings? And they wonder why our country is broke and in debt.

You are an idiot!!! Why complain about something you know absolutely nothing about? No, people like you is what ruin our Country!!!

I have a relative that doesn't work and he and his wife got a $10,000 tax refund check. If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn't have believed it. And with their food stamps they eat much better than I do.
