JUST IN: Tractor-trailer goes over the side of Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel 2-9-17

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A Navy helicopter rescued a driver after their tractor-trailer went over the side of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel Thursday afternoon, 10 On Your Side has confirmed.

CBBT officials tweeted Thursday afternoon that the bridge was closed on both sides due to an incident. Both sides of the bridge-tunnel were later re-opened.

The tractor-trailer went off the southbound side of the CBBT at mile marker 15 around 12:30 p.m. CBBT officials said the driver was alive, but their condition was unknown.

Bridge officials issued Level 2 wind restrictions Thursday, with winds exceeding 47 mph. There was a Level 1 restriction at the time of the accident.

This has happened before...is there something wrong with the bridge..when I have gone across its a bit scary in its design...No space to break down.

How do you know? Just curious

Life expectancy immersed in 40 degree water is less than an hour. The body core temperature drops to the point where not only are extremities numb and useless, but major internal organs shut down.
Kudos to the Navy pilots and rescue team, who did this in 40-50 knot winds in close proximity to the bridge.

Driving over in a car is one thing, try a school bus or tractor trailer. If you opened the door you would fall overboard.

3:27 You take the fun out of this. Just tell them you a psychic, have crystal ball or are in touch voices from the other side. If they can't figure the out the concept of clicking the link, then mess with their heads.

One article I read said he was able to stand on top of the truck to stay out of the water, maybe he had injuries from the crash itself?

If he was standing on the truck at one point then hypothermia had not set in. There are 4 stages to cold water immersion hypothermia being the 3rd. Stage 1 is cold shock response and one element is cardiac related. Arteries narrow immediately upon entering the cold water and the heart has to work harder to pump the same volume of blood through the body. Especially for people with underlying heart disease the additional workload can cause the heart to go into cardiac arrest.

It was probably due to the wind.

Why is there not Law enforcement in the middle for wind speed and on each end stopping trucks and campers once the wind gets to a certain mph prohibiting passage. When I was driving most bridges in length and height did.

rails need to be higher and when winds are this high, no 'taller' vehicles should be allowed on bridge...

5:43. Are you a doctor or did you stay at the Holiday Inn express last night?

May we all pray for this man's family. This is a tragedy and he was trying to do his job. So sad.

Yes 7:34 and no I did not stay at the Holiday Inn express last night. It was the Trump International in Las Vegas. We flew out to see Celine Dion at Caesars.
