Maryland Democrats Voice School Privatization Concerns

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Maryland Democrats and the state’s teachers union on Tuesday criticized Gov. Larry Hogan’s push to expand support for charter schools, attempting to link him with President Donald Trump and newly confirmed Education secretary Betsy DeVos.

Hogan aides countered that the Republican governor is a strong advocate for all forms of education and has the budgets to prove it.

Betty Weller, president of the Maryland State Education Association, stood with Democrats at a news conference in the state capital about an hour before DeVos was confirmed thanks to a tie-breaking vote in the Senate by Vice President Mike Pence.

“With the governor yet again expanding taxpayer funding for private schools and proposing legislation to shift millions of dollars from traditional neighborhood public schools to charter schools, educators must work with the General Assembly to protect our schools from this joint Trump, DeVos, Hogan-privatization agenda,” Weller said.

We need school choice not only for better education but student safety.

of course they do. funny thing how democrats are pro choice when it comes to killing kids but not pro choice when it comes to educating them!

School privatization really is the only answer to get a quality education and stop the leftist indoctrination of our youth.

School choice will level the playing field for all students while increasing the quality of education. Face it, taxpayers have invested huge sums of money into the system, while the system continues to cry and beg for more. School choice will also force accountability by forcing poor schools to improve or shut the doors.

1:16 so basically if the parents can't afford to send their children to another school their children should be the one's punished? ITS ONLY PUNISHING STUDENTS

The only reason the Democrats are worried is that these teachers won't be paying Union Dues which end up going to the Democrats for re-election.

Please enlighten me as to what schools are segregated today?

There is overwhelming evidence that school choice affects the middle to lower class the most. It creates separation based on income. School choice does not level the playing field. It's just another way to privatize and do what they want most, make more $$$$

The public school system is a total failure.
Our kids need the option for better schools.
Both my sons were in a private school during their elementary school years.

When I could no longer afford the tuition, they were put in middle school. They were way ahead of the other kids in all the subjects. If I could had afforded the tuition, I would have kept them in private school.

Private schools operate under a quarter of what public schools use for their budgets. Parents have more of a say in how their children are educated. They also don't put up with bullies or fighting. Problem students are given a chance with a parent conference and if they don't improve, they are kicked out. This doesn't happen much because most of the kids there are there to learn.

Mine were in a Christian school where good values and behavior were taught every day. This gave them the foundation to succeed in life. They are both out of school now and are both doing well. My oldest son is now working on his second degree in Construction Engineering.

I don't believe they would have done this well if they have gone to public school the entire time.
I know they both could not wait to graduate. They both hated the politics and political correctness of the administration and staff. They felt like prisoners in the glass and steel buildings that convey a prison like atmosphere. I am so glad they no longer have to put up with this anymore!

"Maryland Democrats and the state’s teachers union..."

The story could have started and ended with just those seven words.

They are upset because these children will not be taught indoctrination and be taught a well rounded subjects.

2:58 and they were probably taught creationism right? Public tax money should not be used to push a religious agenda regardless of the religion!

Maybe folks don't want their kids going to school with convicted felons like st Bennett

Teachers unions and environmentalists control democrats in this state and that is why it will only go down.

How has that education thing been working out? Follow the money. It's all about the Unions covering their butt.
