Counties Asked To Help Wor-Wic With $600K Shortage Due To Enrollment Dip, Rising Health Care

SNOW HILL – A decline in enrollment and the rising cost of medical benefits forced Wor-Wic Community College to seek financial help from Worcester and Wicomico counties this week.

On Tuesday Murray Hoy, president of Wor-Wic, approached both the Worcester County Commissioners and the Wicomico County Council to ask for funding to help cover a budgetary shortfall. Worcester County agreed to contribute $175,200 while Wicomico County agreed to fund $212,400. Hoy is expected to return to Wicomico County in May to seek an additional transfer.

“I’m coming to you with hat in hand asking you to help offset a $600,000 shortfall,” Hoy said.

In a presentation Tuesday morning, Hoy told Worcester County officials the community college was close to $1.3 million in the hole this year. He said the shortfall was attributable to two things — a decline in enrollment and higher than expected medical benefits costs. Hoy said the decline in enrollment was a trend community colleges nationwide were experiencing. While last year half of Maryland community colleges saw declines, this year they’ve all seen declines, Hoy said. He said nationally, there was a 9 percent reduction in community college enrollment since the end of the country’s recession.

LOL isn't that a hoot. They are already getting money for free tuition and that isn't enough?

Now you know the rest of the story!!

Good old boys club it is.

Rising health care? Really? Find out which staff voted for 0bama and let them pay 100% of their health care. That should help with the deficit.

sorry. no can do
just raise your tuition to meet the costs

Where's all the profits the casino's are touting?

I'm confused. Free tuition, but Wor Wic can't meet their budget? What kind of leadership is that? Where is the strategic planning? How did they miss that medical costs were rising and plan for it? Everyone in the country is aware of the medical cost crisis. These are "educators"? What are they teaching the students? How to live off handouts from the Government?

worwic should let everyone know how much money they have lost on their pasture, I mean golf course

If you owe the state tax money or MVA fines or any type of fee, they won't let you enroll.the state has taken collection to a real low..not even allowing people to drive for work or go to college to get a better job, state seems determined to keep everyone on welfare.

It's not enough that 50% of Worcester's budget goes to the Bd of Ed - the wizards of smart will never stop eating the free lunch :(

They need to ask those responsible like Salisbury University.

Just shows you the quality of higher education. Their management cannot figure out a yearly budget. Their stupidity does not mean the County Tax Payer has the responsibility to bail them out. Bob Culver needs to stop the handout unless he is going to sell his assets to give to these idiots. He does not have my approval to spend my tax dollars for college expenses that I could never afford to attend.

STOP BUILDING SO MUCH ! SLOW DOWN ! Save some money for those rainy $600,000 short falls.

I agree with 3:25. Maybe instead of continuing to expand the campus and have a golf course (really?), they should have been banking funds for lean times. The taxpayers have had enough. One of the reasons Culver was elected was to be a conservative and curb spending. Hope he hasn't forgotten that. I wonder sometimes (free tuition).

Sounds like the WBOE. I bet there are plenty of big salaries at the top - many that could be eliminated or help pay instructors a better wage. Until ALL the educational institutions from K-12 to colleges, drain their swamp of too many chiefs, there will be constant financial trouble. I'm hoping Betsy DeVos turns education upside down...it needs it!

Oh Boy just when you thought you knew how clueless these political hacks are.

Is Culver going to sell his assets to the non degreed, broke, living in the bssement of his parents unsaleable house, unemployed, non voting liberal millenial? No
Somebody prevail upon these people. And vote.

Didn't someone check the solvency of WW before the county decided to give them tuition ? Where is the audit? Or is it beyond the scope of an audit?

Must have an associate degree from there based on your language and your writing ability (or lack of it?)

Anonymous said...

3:25 PM You got that right, I can't afford to go but some unworthy relative to the council members will get a free degree.

4:47 I really do not care about his writing abilities. His message is spot on. You have anything relevant to add? Or just your usual hateful BS?

4:36 - Hilarious last sentence, but probably most won't get it. Wayne - are you reading this?!

I am a student there and all of my instructors talk about how great their insurance plan is.. wow.

Decline in paid enrollment, increase in free enrollment.

The employees are state of maryland employees. Why isnt this a state issue. ?? I am so sick and tired of paying taxes and more taxes and more taxes. What do i get for state and county piggyback tax (which should be illegal) the roads are not maintained and none of "my" so called representatives vote the way i would like them to vote even after phoning and emailing them. With the exception of Andy Harris and sometimes Gov. Hogan. Md sucks the life and money out of its citizens.

Too top heavy.

I will preface my comment by saying this is second hand info but the salary studies of the administrative staff showed they were over paid in comparison to like organizations in even more affluent community colleges. Also, who are we as taxpayers to foot the bill of a place we can never utilize? Im ok with my tax money being used for kids in school but asking taxpayers to foot the bill for adults to get an education when we will get no benefit does not make the chance of a better situation for many of us in the county. Reduce some of the assessments of property, the housing bubble inflated the tax base so much it will never level off to where it should be. I do not support this at all. Cuts should be made to accomodate this but there is no talk of that.

Just how much did that huge geothermal project cost them?

Mr. Culver you should have been aware of 725 figures and you should have done yoir due diligence before trusting taxpayrr money to these clowns. Many hoped you were sharper than that. If you cant do it get some talent that can. Time has passed for your pride and vote seeking.
Shame on all of you. Guilty of theft, complicity, malfeasence, deriliction of duty of office.
Do you know anything about handling this kind of money in these situations? A donut shop wont buy a piece of serviceable equipment before looking under the hood and kicking the tires of the vendor.
Strausburg? The sassy little campaign manager? The new guy? No one? Uh, Im going with D - no one. UNACCEPTABLE MR CULVER. You want to play w big boys pull on yoir big boy pants for work
DO NOT BAIL THESE UNEDUCATED EDUCATORS OUT. THEY ALREADY GET AN INSURED TAXPAYER FUNDED TUITION SUPPLY.

lets see who makes this decision and that of the free tuition. Failed business. No business. Not really any viable business. No business. And then theres council with one exception, no business, failed business or daddy gave them a business.

Can only hope there is a competent challenger to this bunch

agree with 9:04

just trying to survive

Anonymous said...

Maybe, just maybe we can scrap the "free tuition" option.

Anonymous said...

Hoping the council sees through this

step 1 : the "golf course" needs to be plowed under and soybeans planted. that place is a complete joke and has cost well over $1,000,000 to "maintain" IT and supply with equipment. the reason the college got it for free was because nobody was stupid enough to buy it, but mr hoy had to have it. it didn't take long to find out it wasn't "free". someone needs to look into that pit before handing them any more money

Anonymous said...

Isn't FREE, FREE?

Anonymous said...

Ah, but didn't the County vote for freebies? What's up with this? I thought all the libs were tooting about how great Obamacare was and now they're citing it as a need to get more money for a community college? What's up with this? Maybe courts should require more convicts of petty crime to continue their education and learn a job skill. They can take advantage of the new pot-growing education.

957 is right Someone needs to look into how much money worwic has spent on that goat farm and then decide whether they should be sent a blank check signed by the taxpayers. I SAY NO WAY
