Study Finds Young Americans Living Home Highest Since WWII

(CBS Local) – Despite an economy on the upswing, combined with the current unemployment rate being its lowest in recent years, more young Americans are living with their parents than ever before.

The Wall Street Journal found, in sifting through information provided by real estate company Trulia, that more young Americans are living home than they have since 1940.

‘Young American’ is described as someone between 18 and 24, and the numbers are in: in 2015, 40% of young Americans lived with either their parents, siblings or other relatives. That number had been on the rise in recent years despite the economy growing out of the recession, where in previous economic cycles the amount of those living with their parents would decrease as the economy increased.

Time claims that experts point to difficulties getting mortgages as well as rising rents and the general life difficulties of making it on your own.

I thought obama was making college free? Remember his campaign speeches in 2008. Instead healthcare when up 58 percent in 4 years.

Between 18 and 24 aren't most going to college? If that is the case wouldn't most still use their home address even when away at college? So more people in college today than before means more living at home/using home address.
I know at one time once they get out of college they would get a job and buy a house. Now the money that was used for a mortgage payment is used for payment for their student loans.

21 year olds are stuck at $12 or less because that's just the going rate. Nobody that makes $12 an hour can afford health insurance, food, utilities AND rent/ mortgage payments. Oh, and a car and fuel to get to work...

Both of my young men still live with me ages 20 and 23. Both are going to college and cannot live off of the poor wages that they earn from their jobs even when they are working full time in the summer and on breaks. With student loan debt, and a high cost of living, they have no choice. I don't mine them living with me. If my wife and I want to go on vacation I always have someone home to watch our dogs, or watch our home and property. Until things improve, they will be living with me. The other option if you don't get married is to share and apartment with someone, which I did when I was young. This can cause problems if the other person cannot come out with their half of the rent or utilities.

And they can stay on their parents' insurance until 26.
