ENJOY NATURE’S BEAUTY ON WICOMICO COUNTY’S TRAILS

Wooded trails, waterfront views – enjoy nature’s beauty during a walk or run on one of Wicomico County’s trails.

The trails at Pemberton Historical Park, totaling about 4.5 miles, offer a little bit of everything.

While traveling the History, Woodland, Pondside, Handy Hall, Bell Island and Osprey Trails, along with the Wetland Walk, hikers can really get in tune with nature.

While much of the trails are rugged, including tree roots and leaves, there are also boardwalk areas on the trails and mulched and gravel spots.

People can make their way to one or more of the lookout points to see the Wicomico River and wetland views.

Allen Swiger, a program director with Wicomico County Recreation, Parks & Tourism, noted how beautiful Pemberton Historical Park is, as well as the secluded feel it has.

New signage went up at the park this spring, which includes a revamped kiosk and several signs that include maps of the park’s trails. The kiosk and a sign near the entrance include all of the park’s trails, while other maps focus on the nearest trails.

Not everyone gets onto the Pemberton trails at the same point, Swiger said.

“That signage is there to help when you get way out in the woods,” he said.

Check out the trail map and descriptions online here.

Want to try another path? A shorter trail can be found in the wooded area of WinterPlace Park. The park has grassy and sports fields, but visitors can go over a bridge in the eastern area of the park and find themselves in a forest. There is also a short trail at Leonard’s Mill Park, right by the Wicomico County Welcome Center.

Visitors who decide to walk or run on a trail shouldn’t try to go at a fast pace, particularly if they aren’t used to the terrain. Use a slower pace to connect with nature and take in what Wicomico County has to offer.

Be sure to enjoy all of the ticks you'll get too. It is nice to explore, but be sure to realize that you are a guest in mother nature's house and you should prepare accordingly by using insect repellents on your proper dress attire.
