My grandmother from Newfoundland made a type of cake made with pork and molasses called a Bang Belly. It was great and I have not had one since she passed away.
My Eastern Shore Grandmother used to make amazing Deviled Clams. She also would make this type of cake the had a coconut icing that we have not found the name or a recipe so sadly it is just kept in our memories.

My Mother made great goulash and stuffed cabbage. My Grandmother made the best spaghetti I've ever eaten. Never have been able to copy it. She also made an incredible braised pot roast.
Favorites of mine that my mother made were Sauerkraut and Kielbasi and her crab soup. My grandmother didn't cook (or clean.) Her mother and grandmother both lived nearby her and they cooked, cleaned and took care of my mother and her siblings so my grandparents could both work.

Sweet potato bread.....was cooked in an iron pot in the wood cook stove, about half to three quarters inch thick, a little chewy. With same homemade butter it was fabulous. Have tried and tried to replicate it...."no can do".

I use to go over to my grandparents house and eat dinner. We would eat the things my Mom and her siblings forbid be cooked when they were around. Pigs feet and sauerkraut, chitterlings cooked in bacon grease in a cast iron skillet, fried tripe. In 1984 on my grandfathers birthday I sent him a card with a few dollars in it and told him he could spend the money on some pigs feet or his favorite political candidate but that the money would be best spent on pigs feet. He was a yellow dog democrat.

My grandmother made potato salad also (with her own dressing) that was so good. I overate at one sitting and became ill. There was never any left at picnics, reunions, or other events. The good news is the recipe was passed down to my wife so I still enjoy the dish.

fresh baked bread/rolls!! What a delightful smell and butter melting on warm bread/rolls. She baked on Friday or Saturday, we had warm rolls with supper that night and toasted it was like english muffins, butter in all those nooks and crannies?? Delicious!!
