Quilt Show in Mardela Springs Nov. 15

Are You the Owner of a Beautiful Old Quilt or Coverlet?

Quilt Show in Mardela Springs Nov. 15

If you have a treasured old bed covering – quilt, coverlet, counterpane – but would like to learn more about it, we have the program you have been waiting for! Westside Historical Society will offer the sixth program in this year’s Saving Our Traditions series on November 15, Sunday, from 1 to 4 pm at the Mardela Springs Fire Hall in Mardela Springs, this program focusing on old Quilts and Coverlets!

Our expert is Dr. Cindy Byrd, Director of the Julia Purnell Museum in Snow Hill. She will begin with an overview of the skill and art of this traditional form of needlecraft, which in past centuries was practiced by men as well as by women. Dr. Byrd also will offer tips on preservation and protection of these fine old pieces of bedding. Following her remarks she will examine the quilts and other items brought in by those attending, and will offer information and insights regarding each, identifying patterns and pointing out any special features, and finally offering an evaluation. Dr. Byrd has been working with these kinds of textiles for a number of years, and every year at the Purnell Museum produces the very popular fiber festival!

Admission is free, but if you choose to bring in a quilt or other item of bedding – and we hope you will!! – the cost is $10 for each item, limit of three items per person. In addition to offering information / evaluations on the items, Westside Historical Society is beginning to compile a data base of historical textiles and would appreciate visitors allowing us to photograph and gather data on each item (including a description and any information about the maker).

There will be refreshments and the chance to meet and share with other quilt enthusiasts!! A fun day so mark your calendars!!
