I think 5:53 may be right. Philips (Netherlands)didn't even invent the thing until 1969 and I think it took maybe 5 or 6 years for them to become popular so that would make it mid-70's. But that's picking nits because Bunk Mann still tells a good story. And I do remember Boardwalk Elvis!
Boardwalk Elvis looks the same now as he did on the boards in the 60's. He doesn't seem to age. I used to enjoy hearing him sing on WETT the Wayne Cannon show.

Actually I remember both his cassette player and his boombox. He had the cassette player before the boombox.
If you go to Google Streetview you can find him riding his bike on Rt 589 (Racetrack Rd.) just past Showell Elementary School before the Rt 113N exit.
Someone needs to write a story about the night the music died,AKA the night BWE was arrested.Icons get arrested too you know.
