It’s Official Uber Service Available In Ocean City; Resort’s First Uber Driver Now Operating

OCEAN CITY — One week after the Town of Ocean City passed changes to its taxi cab ordinance, the resort’s very first official Uber driver hit the streets in town this week.

Ocean City officials have been wrestling with the potential for the car service, popular in metropolitan areas across the bridge and all over the country, to come to the resort. Last week, the Mayor and Council passed changes to its ordinance governing taxi cabs in the resort and continued the discussion about regulating Uber if and when it arrived in Ocean City.

This week, it’s no longer a question of if or when as local resident Mick Chester had his application with Uber approved by the growing company. Chester wears many hats around Ocean City, including firefighter, rescue swimmer and bartender, among others, and he is now Ocean City’s first official Uber driver.

Well we won't use this service when we go out on the town.
First of all the name "Uber" is absolutely horrid.
Secondly I prefer to use services that are local and where more of the money stays in the local economy.

He might be a local but does he pay medallion fees , does he have insurance?

I support local businesses but also like prompt service. Hope Uber encourages the other OC cabs to elevate their service.

We be scared of anything new on the shore. Uber cars are much nicer than 99% of cabs and Uber maintains insurance above and beyond the driver's insurance. Try doing some research before being so negative. Works great in most civilized areas of the country. Probably will fail on the shore.

Yeh not much civilization or progress on the shore....glad I left....

Don't be silly 9:14. No one is "scared."
I think you need to do your research as you are shooting from the hip-Big Time. Many Uber drivers are finding the high and hidden costs of being an independent contractor puts them at a huge disadvantage compared to traditional taxi services.
It doesn't matter how you look at it. Using your own car and putting 100k miles in a year, add gas and insurance for approx $18/hr is bad business. You end up making $10/hr if that when you then add elevated insurance costs,
vehicle maintenance.
Critics claim and it appears so that this is "an opportunity" which targets immigrants who are willing to work long hours for low wages.
Oh and Uber takes a 20% commission fee, so this does have a negative on the local economy.

I wanted to weigh in on this, after I found an article I had read awhile ago about Uber, who had been criticized for inflating numbers.
Jan 22,15 Money Magazine put out a chart from Uber listing per hour driver earnings.
Boston 19.06
Chicago 16.20
DC 17.79
LA 16.98
NY 23.52
SF 19.04
This is BEFORE gas, insurance, vehicle depreciation and other expenses. Assuming a 40 hour work week this works out to about 7.20/hr.
I've heard of Uber drivers being referred to as Walmart employees on wheels.

Uber makes it's money scamming people. They offer some kind of finance program for people with bad or no credit to buy cars to drive for them.

10:41 Then don't be an Uber driver. I'm not one but do prefer to use Uber over cabs in most cities. Some of the benefits are that the drivers are local, friendly and not non-english speaking immigrants. Uber cars are also much nicer than an old police cars that have been repainted, smell and have cages/dividers. To each his own.
