Ohio Cop’s Refusal to Shoot is Model For Police Restraint

After a spate of controversial shootings by police officers, a new incident is drawing public attention for the opposite reason: An officer is shown on video refraining from the use of his weapon, despite clearly being in a volatile and dangerous situation.

The incident involving Jesse Kidder, a rookie cop in Ohio, is drawing national publicity and praise as a model of police restraint.

After a car chase Thursday, a murder suspect jumped out of his vehicle and charged at officer Kidder, who got out of his car and had his gun ready – and a body camera running.

Suspect Michael Wilcox was thought to be armed, had a hand in one pocket as he came at the officer, and repeatedly said, “Shoot me.” Kidder replies, “No man. I’m not gonna do it.”

In the end, police backup arrived and Mr. Wilcox got down on the ground, arrested without shots fired.

The incident comes amid a national focus on cases in which police used deadly force under questionable circumstances, and notably against black men. Scrutiny of the shooting of teen Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., and the “chokehold” death of street vendor Eric Garner in New York spawned a “black lives matter” movement last year.

It looks like more cops being killed & wounded to me.

He got lucky. If he'd tried that with a career criminal thug he would have been a dead cop, and we would never hear a peep out of the media. Because "cops lives don't matter" apparently.

But of course the whiners are already latching onto the "he was white, that's why he didn't get shot" nonsense. Just can't win with those window lickers.

Unless the subject actually produced a gun and pointed it at him, he was right (and very brave) to wait.

Will there be demonstrations over this?

There should be.

Here's a clue, 3:38.....That IS how it should be done.
When a cop faces a choice as to whether to shoot or not, he should be DAMN SURE he's right when he shoots.
If that means he gives a citizen a extra second to show he was reaching for his wallet and not a gun, THAT is his job.
Its NOT to "go home safe every night". If that is a cop's goal, he shouldn't be a cop.
I don't know when it became permissible for cops to kill people because they were "afraid", but you guys have killed a whole lot of innocent and unarmed people because you're always "afraid".
YOU would have killed that guy. But the rookie cop DIDN'T shoot and BOTH lived. And you think that was a bad move???

How? In what way? This officer waited until he saw a gun. Never did. Never shot. He is young and followed his training. Your mentality of just shoot him is from years of laziness and just not caring anymore. Your job is dangerous but still needs to be done the right way.

6:16 why shouldn't a cops job/main concern be to go home safe every night? I wouldn't expect anyone in any profession to not have their own safety a priority and top one at that...yeah, a threat needs to be present that warrants deadly force but you can't always wait until a gun is pointed at you to react. Just a situatuon unrelared to this to consider: If you were with your child and a man was threatening your child with harm, would you wait to protect your family until you were sure that it was a gun the suspect was pulling out to point at your child or would you give him fair warning that his statements have caused you concern and that any sudden movements towards your family will be met with force?

Maybe Bruce Jenner can give his balls to this officer, since he has none!

I agree, it was apparent that the guy wanted suicide by cop, and he was properly denied.

In 10 years, he may receive a thank you from that guy.

Either way, I would back every second of this video.

When a person tries to kill a cop you better believe I want that cop to blow some head off. Hopefully you will be the moron trying it one day.

Hey Dummy how do you know he did his job correctly? Because he was scared to death and made the world and the rest of his brothers in blue know he is a wuss!

The pussifying of America continues. Disarming America, same sex marriage and now arresting cops for doing their job and arresting the poor innocent little thugs. Next we will have male police officers dressed in drag and wearing high heels with no weapons for protection...

Did he try to kill a cop? No! You just wanted and hoped this cop killed the guy.its like you cops want and wait for your chance to put a notch on your gun.

Anonymous said...

Lmao. Never gonna happen. I'm a big boy. I don't need tin to help me.

Anonymous said...

Or a wrongful death suit. Thanks for the name calling officer. Shows your true intellect.

Wuss? Scared to kill for no reason? That makes him a good cop and you a wanna be murderer! Mike Lewis! Do you see! Do you see why you need to control your deputies? They would've killed this man. Just backs the suspicion your deputy murdered that boy months ago. Its obvious your deputies do not know wrong from right.

God knows I hope Mike Lewis sees this. He needs to know where his deputies are in their minds. 9:27 has obviously lost his. Its the other way around. This officer showed his brothers in blue how to stare down the barrel of danger and hold strong. Not become instantly scared and kill a guy. I'd beg to differ on who is a wuss. I just saw bravery at its best. What cops did years ago. What police took pride in years ago.

8:32....If I have a gun pointed at someone, unless they are Wyatt Earp and can draw on me in .3 seconds, there is NO WAY anyone is going to pull a gun out and NOT get shot FIRST. And several times.
12:49 said it right --- cops USED to be a lot braver and took pride in NOT killing people they COULD have legally killed.
And sorry, a cop's MAIN goal IS NOT to "go home safely each night". Want to do that? Be an accountant. Do not profess to "protect" anyone, when the first thing you do at the first hint of danger is to shoot people.
No citizen is allowed to do that, even under the same circumstances.
If police just shot criminals, fine. But they shoot naked unarmed men, kids with BB guns, people who run from them (shooting people in the back has been the mark of a coward for 250 years -- trying to change that??), people who CALLED them for help (!!), children, other cops, you name it....
The people with the legal authority to kill you with no fear of punishment MUST be held to a very high standard (being "afraid" doesn't meet that bar).

Should have shot him.
