Perhaps too many of you aren't aware of just how special this non profit organization is? Owners Hal and Nancy Chernoff have been working very successfully with underprivileged children here on the Shore for decades.
I've personally watched them go from literally a shack to this new state of the art facility and guess what, not a single penny came from taxpayers! They survive through unconditional donations from people like Danny Burt, Sandy Fitzgerald, Donny Hall, Brian Lacomp, John Robinson and so many other people who recognize just how special this Gym is to the community.
While Fernando and Alex Guerrero are some of the big names and successes we've all witnessed, there are HUNDREDS of other young men and women who now have a better life because of the structured discipline Hal Chernoff delivers every single day.
Last week I asked who you thought should be the "Person of the Year" and my choice is Hal Chernoff. His countless hours, his creativity, his dedication and most importantly his unbelievable success with these children just cannot be matched.
This past weekend we witnessed yet another successful event held to not only support the Main Street Gym, Hal & Nancy made sure 2/3 of the money raised went to charities the Police and Firefighters chose.
Ladies & Gentlemen, it was standing room only in this huge building, as it should be. People traveled all the way from Philadelphia to watch and enjoy an extremely well planned out event. I can tell you there were women there who started out saying they just weren't into boxing. However, when all was said and done they had incredible smiles on their faces and they'd say, "you know, that wasn't too bad at all".
Yes, the evening was based around Boxing but for some of us, we know what Hal puts into ALL of these events. We know just how hard the children, young adults and adults put in to these events, including ALL of the Volunteers, (and there are a lot of them) to Pay It Forward to the Main Street Gym.
So the next time you hear Obama say he'd like you to donate to his causes, send a check to the Main Street Gym instead because one thing is for sure, they are giving back to this community like no one ever has. It's structured and it's successful.
If you'd like to make a donation contact Hal Chernoff at

Agreed!!!!!!
Agree 100%. I've known Hal since my early days and he is a class act.
I would go a couple of rounds with the the almighty.
First time ever my wife and I attended a boxing event and I must say this was one well organized evening. We really enjoyed ourselves Joe. On a sad note we understand the police officer from the main event was flown to Baltimore later that evening resulting from his nose and eye injury. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the officer and his family hoping for a speedy recovery. Thank you police and fire for all you do.
Hope the officer gets better.
